Just saying "Nigeria won against Spanoulis" is half of the story. At that time (other tournaments as well) Greek National team was really unstable because of several reasons: - Greek Basketball Association had huge financial issues due to the financial crisis - There was an ongoing scandal with one of the starting fives - The national team was suffering from identity issues for long time after Kazlauskas "brilliant" idea to make Greeks to play fast paced Lithuanian style of basketball and then transition to a coach with the exact opposite mentality. - It was a transition period where in each tournament 2 to 3 very important players were missing from the team. You might think all of these are excuses so far and they don't diminish Nigeria's achievement. Do you know what diminishes it? Not giving a clear foul (they brought one of the arms down) at Spanoulis' 3 point buzzer beater attempt, which is the actual reason Nigeria won and brings the most important factor for this win. The referring in most games was ludicrous due to FIBA's beef with Euroleague. Nigeria is not at fault for the bad referring, but who would have remembered that game if Greece had won instead? For example, Greece lost against N. Macedonia (they were weaker than Nigeria) in the previous Eurobasket (again because of that identity crisis), but nobody remembers it because it didn't change anything in practice.

@@stri2003 umm no it was 2012. 2012 was like the only Olympic with 2 African teams, Nigeria and Tunisia, as Nigeria qualified through the qualifying tournament. That was the same Nigerian team that Carmelo put up 37 points against and the US beat by 83 points

Don't under estimate PR. They placed 12th at the WC without their NBA player. Now they're at home with Alvarado. Alvarado was born in Brooklyn. His dad is Puerto Rican but his mom is Mexican so he could have just as easily been playing for the Mexican team

@@gabepizza Italy reached the top 8 at every FIBA tournament: Olympics, Eurobasket and WC in these past 3 years. I am not saying that PR is bad, it's just that Italy is one of the elite European teams, the best in the world along USA and Canada. And anyway a single game won't change that. Even if somehow PR wins one this time, what I said doesn't change
