Olympus E-M5 MKIII Vs E-M1 MKII - Battle. E-M5 MKIII was launch last week. Its specs are pretty close to the ones that E-M1 MKII has. So I wanted to put these two cameras to a battle. ***Subscribe to my Weekly Newsletter: bit.ly/PetersNewsletter ***My Gear: www.ajatuksiavalokuvauksesta....

When I bought my E-M1 (I) a few years ago, the former E-M5 (II) was available as an alternative. But at the end of the day I bought the E-M1 for the same reason, because of the better ergonomics of the two upper dials. This worked and acts on the E-M1 still solid and better manageable, than the construction of the E-M5. Too bad is the new E-M5 (III), which unfortunately has only the smaller battery installed, instead of using the BLN-1. A few grams more weight would have been in the end not a broken leg, if you could work longer and thus more relaxed.

Thank you, Peter, for this comprehensive review regarding these 2 great Olympus camera's. I had wished they would have shared the same battery as the e-m1mk2 as a backup body. It is more reasonable as a semi pro to fetch a second hand e-m1mk2 and use it as backup camera as they share the same battery type. The new E-M5mk3 has somehow the same DNA as the M1mk2 (from a technology point of view). i am of the opinion that when you beef up the e-m5mk3 with an extra grip the price gap becomes very close to the e-m1mk2 without grip but with much better handling. I agree with you that it is a great leasure camera paired with the f/1.8 lenses with are compact and I sincerely hope Olympus will update these lenses acordingly to have some sort of weather sealing, without making them too large. Re-using the m43 Olympus system since earlier this year, I came to the conclusion that my APS-C sensor camera's have to go as the image quality, even from a venerable m43 sensor, is about the same as most APS-C camera's. Slimming down my camera systems to m43 for portability, travel,... and FF for shooting cats in a coalmine or moving subjects in low light. At first i was sceptical but the more I use Olympus camera's the more I appreciate the handling, the compactness and the good image quality. As Peter Thorpe stated since several years "it is good enough" for my needs.

One can never have too many cameras. I have the E-M1 Mk II but was strongly considering the M5 MkIII as a second camera, because of its compactness as a travel camera and that it was ALMOST an M1 MkII. The main turn off was the necessity to have yet another different set of batteries and charger. Now with the E-M1 MkIII about to ship AND it being ALMOST an E-M1X AND using the identical battery as the M1 MkII AND being able to use the same battery grip -- I'll have to go with the E-M1 MkIII for now. But I can still see an E-M5 in my future. Thanks for this great video and also the M1 MkIII video. And, btw, your English is waaaaay better than my Finnish! Thanks again.

You said exactly what I have been asking. Olympus should bring out version 2 of the m.zuiko primes that are weather sealed. The only reason I would get the new em5 iii is the smaller size and weather sealing but without small weather sealed lenses it defeats the whole purpose

Firstly nice video with some great pictures, I look at both the cameras side by side and they look the same size, the E-M5 MKIII is not for me as it doesn’t give anything extra so I will wait a bit longer for the E-M1 MKIII hopefully with all the E-M1X goodies handed down plus possibly something new or better like being able to use higher ISO

Great video Peter, I look forward to the EM5 mkII compared to the mkIII as I have the mkII. I bought the 12-40 f2.8 pro lens so I have a weather sealed kit for those all too common wet days in the NW of England! I also have the 45mm 1.8 and just bought the 17mm 1.8 for those occasions when the weather might be OK and I can have that simple lightweight prime & camera. So I agree if Olympus could make the m.zuiko lens weather sealed it would be great if it didn't also lead to a big price hike and I suspect it would! Please keep doing what you are doing. Pete

Having most of 1.2 features packed into a small 5.3 body is the strongest argument in this battle. Adding that grip to 5.3 body diminishes this strong point.

I really like the size of the em-5 mkiii, I just wish that Olympus had kept the all metal body. I also agree with you regarding weather sealing some of their smaller lenses. I actually have 2 Olympus systems, the em-1 mkii with the 12-100 and 7-14 pro lenses ( I actually traded my 12-40 & 40-150 pro lenses for the 12-100 to reduce weight and bulk). When I go hiking or traveling I have the em-10 mkii with the 9-18 mm, 14-150mm, and 75-300 mm. This makes for a really light weight, small and versatile system for travel and I find myself carrying it much more than the pro system because of the weight and bulk. I would replace the em-10 mkii with the em-5 mkiii today if those lenses could also be replaced with weather sealed versions. I do enjoy your videos very much and appreciate the efforts you put into them. Thank you.

Having used primarily the Canon EOS 80D, I love its beefy hand grip in vertical height. It's very comfortable to hold in hand. On contrary I also have a Lumix DMC-TZ95 as a travel zoom camera. Its hand grip is too small in vertical height. It is uncomfortable to hold in hand. Having tested the 5 Mark II, its hand grip also feels too small in vertical height. The hand grip in 1 Mark II feels perfect. I am highly interested in the 5 Mark III but I worry about the vertical height of its hand grip being too small, even with the external OEM hand grip attached. I have big hand and long fingers. What's your take on the vertical height of the 5 Mark III's hand grip with the external OEM hand grip attached? If you compare that with the 1 Mark II with its larger hand grip, would you recommend the 1 Mark II to me with large hands?
@ForsgardPeter

I own both cameras, so I would give two big ++ to the OM5 III, this camera still offers the scenic program SCN. Not every SCN function is useful, but I love the panorama function which is not available in the EM 1! The panorama for me is very important if I`m going to present a picture show! And one + for EM 5 is the bulb function on the selection wheel, so this function is easier to find.

Same here. I still tend to use the 5.III as a walk around camera and the 1.II as a “serious” camera with the 12-40 and 40-150 Pro lenses, even though they aren’t very different. The 1.II feels faster to shoot with though but I love the Dramatic scene on the 5.III. A big difference is that I can’t use the 1.II with polarised sunglasses.

Looking to replace my E-M5 MKII with the MKIII - PHASE DETECT AF!! But you raised a very important point. I really want a weather sealed M.Zuiko prime. I don't mind if it is f1.8 as long as it is small. My only weather-proof lenses are the 12-50 which is fine, but SLOW, and the 40-150 which is amazing but also HUGE. I really want a 17 f1.8 weather sealed lens to walk around with in the rain when travelling.

The old silver Olympus cameras were always cheaper! I went to Jessops in 1981 to get an OM2N. They were out of stock in chromes at £179.99 and the black was in stock at something like £205 or £210 or £215 which was as much as a Canon A1! W e weren't on the phone so I didn't ringcto chexk forxatock. It was the HUGE Jessops storevin Hinckley Road Leicester. You would have loved it. I left disappointed and got an OM10 a eeek later and had money for a Sigma 80-200 zoom. I never had a new OM2N. I did have an OMTi later from the same store. I don't know why I didn't just get the chrome OM2N from the local Comet electrical store for £169.99! That's where I got the OM10. It was just up the road in my hometown!

03:04 the BackDial. Today I was in my local photogear supplyshop and held the e-M5mkIII in my hands for the first time. From the video I already had a hunch about your critique of the BackDial. I very much agree with your comments, Peter: the BackDial of mkIII cannot be as easily operated as the one on the mkII, as it is situated a litte 'inward' [and also seems a tad smaller]. The grip of the mkIII may be slightly more secure and comfortable than that of the mkII. [I think I will pass on the E-M5mkIII and try to get hold of a good 2nd hand E-M1 mkII-body(incl. update 3.0), with its grip better suited for a future 12-100 lens.] PeterK

Hi Peter. Great battle review as always. I'm currently considering each of these cameras as a replacement of my E-M10 MK 3. One thing that was missing from the review is how well do these cameras handle with AF subject tracking? Is there a difference between the two? Do either have usable eye or face detect (not looking for Sony level, but something that's usable)? I've heard that AF-C subject tracking has greatly improved in the 1 MK 2 since the 3.0 firmware upgrade; is it similar in the 5 MK 3? Thanks!

So, image quality is the same, but the EM1 has a bigger battery and two card slots. All other factors covered are really subjective. I chose the EM5 for portability, but I would not use it as a main camera for professional work. For that I go with a full frame sensor. But I use the EM5 as a second camera for weddings, etc, and have gotten some really wonderful shots. It comes down to battery life and card slots versus cost.

At 10:28 you compare the image quality. You state that the processor/sensor are the same and therefore the IQ will be the same. But the images did look slightly different. Hi Peter... Just out of curiosity can you elaborate in random order about the following questions that came up during you comparison here? - You mention the EM1MKII being kind of more ergonomic, but still give the fun to the EM5? - Not a question, but just an advice... increasing the EM1MKII height with those Arcaswis L-Plates adding + 4-5 mm EM1MKII height results in an unbelievable better ergonomic IMO over the EM1 original and not at lest the EM5. - Why is the EM5 more fun over the EM1MKII because it's new? Now found an offer from a serious dealer with only tiny difference between the em1mk2 and the new em5mk3 (which is currently only available as kit in olympus store Germany)... Now close buying the em1mk2.... Not replacing a camera from 2015 by one from 2016 🤔 Most probably I will keep my em5mk2 and invest further into new glass... Maybe an 8mm 1.8 This will boost my options more than a 3 year old body. 🤔 What do you think or where do you see from your perspective the bigger step for an em5mk2 user (with 7-14mm, 12-40mm, Pana 35-100 2.8, 75-300mm, 60mm 2.8 macro, 7,5mm samyang fish eye)? Focus on landscape, city and still whilst traveling.

Getting new glass instead of a new body is wise. I looks like you are pretty much covert. Only thing that comes to my mind is to get a small and fats wide angle? Maybe the 17mm f1.8 or the 12mm f2.0? Both are very good lenses and are small to carry during travels.

thanks for the comparison. As a hiker, one key differentiation between the two is weight - the EM5 iii is 414 grams vs the EM1 ii is 574 grams, both including body and battery. the difference of 160grams is about six ounces, enough to get my attention. However, the grip on the EM5iii is not quite adequate for the bigger, weather proof lenses (I predominantly use the Olympus 12-40mm). So if one adds in the expense and weight of the battery grip for the EM5 iii, one comes to about the same weight. Since currently one can buy a used EM1 ii for a few hundred dollars less than a new EM5 iii, it makes little sense right now to go after the EM5 iii.

I also was considering E5 m3 for its light weight, since I am a backpacker. But it cannot be safetely clipped to a Peak Design Capture, because of its plastic body, and this is a major drawback to me. You may add a grip, and perhaps with a grip clipping to a Peak Design would be safe, but with that the weight and size savings would be negligible.

Peter, when I wanted to upgrade my E-M10 Mk I, I compared the E-M1 Mk II with the E-M5 Mk III. The specs are so similar and ergonomically they are so close if the E-M5III has the ECG-5 grip, that I went with the E-M5 because its battery is shared with my E-M10, and my E-PM2s, and my E-PL1. I would have loved either one!

Direct line headphones provide instantaneous volume feedback, but bluetooth headphones could theoretically pair with the em5iii and provide a sort of volume monitoring. The decision to put in bluetooth but not a headphone port was a conscious one... why put in a 2nd rate feature (bluetooth headphones) on release and receive flak when you could make it a firmware upgrade later and be praised for it.

What drives my choice is performance of the camera with the line of 4/3 lenses. The latter make up over 50% of my current kit; I use and love them still. If the E-M5 Mk iii cannot focus Oly 4/3 lenses as successfully as the E-M1 ii, the 'simple choice' for me will always be the latter or bodies that can. Speaking for myself, critical capability for any mft camera is its ability to perform well using BOTH 4/3 & micro 4/3 lenses. This recognizes the value of a significant investment in Oly glass since at least 2009. How very relieved I have been since the arrival of the EM-M mk i, which dismissed all prior fears (and angst) over a potential loss of investment on many $$$ worth of 4/3 lenses. I am quite relieved Oly did not abandon their faithful system customers by creating 'stranded assets' of its line of 4/3 lenses. The foregoing is equally 'visionary' to all that has followed since..... Perhaps I missed something. You point out that the E-M5 mk iii specs are 'pretty close' to the E-M1 mk ii. However I did not see that E-M5 compatibility with 4/3 lenses was addressed, or how it would rated to EM 1-system bodies. The E-M5 mk iii will be an interesting contender if it matches the function of the EM-1 system cameras with 4/3. If not, then the E-M5 mk iii will be (for me) a different type of system and one in which (for reasons given) I have much less interest - Thanks as always for the video. Cheers. PS - I prefer black camera bodies.....

I am an amateur, but I usually go out for two or three hours photo sessions. For now I have an EM10 mark I and one EM10 MarkII and it's ok. I had an EM1 MarkI before and sold it to try the E10 II. I realised now that it was a mistake because the M10 does not have the stacking feature. I really really like the looks of the OM10 line and OMD5 line, more than the EM series. It's clear that I will buy another Olympus body soon and I thought about those in this batle. However, I feel more tempted by the EM1 MII. The EM5 III is more good looking, but for the long term I think I prefer to live with the more sober EM1 II. One more fn button is not very important when you have nine, but it's a good thing. I avoid very big lenses but I can't avoid 75mm Olympus for example. It will be more balanced in the EM1 II. Battery life is a strong point for EM1 II. In this moment, a second hand EM1 II is much much cheaper than the EM5 III. I don't wear glasses. I will keep my EM10 mark 1 that is in a shelf, to grab when I want to put a camera in my pocket and take my bike. It still is a very good camera, and very cute. I never thought I would replace Fuji for Olympus. Three reasons : Stacking, size (even better), and the price of the lenses. Thank you for this video !

The sensor is the most expensive part of a camera and the sensor in the 5D is 4 times the area of the sensor in the Olympus camera, plus a sensor 4 times as big is not just 4 times as expensive, it could be 10 times as expensive as the yield for bigger sensors is lower. The shutter and other delicate and expensive parts are also bigger to accomodate the bigger sensor.
