hey... a while ago I bought a cheap Pen ee. but didnt fire, so I opened it up and noticed that the needle for the lightmeter became stuck in time. now it's working like new! very happy with that! Try opening yours, you never know ;)
The ASA setting will auto set the F stop automatically when the meter works. But if the meter fails but shutter works, you can manual set the F stop for flash photos and not use a flash, It does not look like it alters the shutter speed to sync with a flash bulb. Thus It may work, some camera would have reduced the shutter speed and you would need to re adjust the exposure. I have the older EE model.
This is a old video but thought I might comment in case someone runs across this and is looking to resolve this issue. The issue in this case is not likely the selenium cell. The selenium cell could still be bad but that's not what is causing the functionality issue that is demonstrated. If the selenium cell is broken but all other parts of the camera are working then the behavior would be red flag and shutter lockout because the needle would always be in the not enough light area. A second test to check the selenium cell would be to listen to the shutter fire with no light and then with a flashlight pointed at the cell. If the cell is working, you should be able to hear the difference between the shutter speeds at 1/40 and 1/200. So what is the issue? There is enough info in the video to glean that the mechanical works are gummed up. Most likely from dried oil. Often times it's the aperture blades are stuck together but it could be something else. You can check the aperture blades by just taking the aperture setting out of auto and see if the aperture opens when you push the shutter button. More often then not they are stuck in the F22 position. Generally, a good CLA is all that is needed to resolve this issue. A good camera repair should be able to do and if you are a DIY person there are a bunch of great disassembly videos here on youtube. It's a super cool camera and I would love to see more people out there with them.
Hi there, can you help me determine what is wrong with my EE-2? My aperture can move when I switch in between the flash mode (3.5-22) and I can still take pictures even if the lens are covered. Does this mean that my light meter is out?
@@theodoretran9839 it’s hard to say. The selenium cell is attached to a needle. You can see that needle if you take the top off. It’s only 3 screws. Use your hand to block and unlock the selenium cell and if you see the needle moving then camera just needs a clean.
You could… disassemble and fix it. Not a difficult job. There are a couple of good uTube videos that show you how. Selenium meters contrary to popular belief do not go bad. Mine had the same problem. I fixed it easily.
Puedes tener suerte.
I kept the camera but I have never used it. When I want to shoot half-frame I use one of my other Pens. Usually my EE-3. Without the exposure lock, shooting in ISO priority would be hit and miss. If it were me, I would choose a film with a wide exposure tolerance and shoot in aperture mode knowing my shutter speed would be ca. 1/40. I hope that helps.
Hi, you can still use your Pen-EE2 indoor or at night with a flash unit, or you find a beaten up EE2 with a working cell and install it on your camera.
