Nephrologist and intermittent fasting expert Dr. Jason Fung shares what happens to your body when you fast. I'm 60 years old, was pre diabetic the doctor told me I was pretty much diabetic, 45 pounds overweight, high insulin levels making me also insulin resistant. I also have pretty bad eczema that causes severe rashes all over my body. I figured I don't have much to lose and started eating once a day on a high fat low to no carb diet. The first thing that happened was my A1C, it took a nose dive right down to the normal range (so much for diabetes). Second thing to happen was dropping weight, pounds just started coming off, I was 187 and now 142 to 145 it bounces up and down around there. The third thing that started to happen was a huge drop in my insulin levels thus beginning the reversal of my insulin resistance. The fourth thing to start happening was fat loss, went from having a big belly to now having a waist to hip ratio 0.8. The fifth thing to happen was a huge reduction in my eczema flare ups and itching I no longer use topical steroid creams. Now I combined eating once a day, a high fat very low carb diet and walking a lot of walking and these are the results of that. I am in way better physical condition now at 60 than I ever was when I was in my 40's. My doctor told me not to do it, it will make me sick, he also said I should take a statin because of high total cholesterol. I did the diet anyways and I did not take the statins or diabetes medication. He wanted to chase the symptoms, I said screw that and went after the causes which was high sugars (due to carbs) and insulin resistance (also due to carbs). Eating all day didn't help matters any either. Well that is my story and my results from eating once a day and ditching all the corporate garbage (carbs). As for big pharma they can keep their Metformin and their statins that they convince doctors to push. If I had listened to my doctor I would be on statins and diabetes medication now, I take no medications now and I'm healthy. Switching to eating once a day is the best thing I ever done. It's all about lifestyle change not medications. Edit: Shout out to Dr. Fung, I listened to what he had to say and took his advice. It's because of him that I'm not on statins or diabetes medication, it's because of him I'm healthy and no longer suffering from metabolic syndrome. Not only that, he didn't charge me a dime for the valuable information, Thanx Doc.

My doctor put me on a statin some years back. It caused irregular heartbeat and palpitations, not to mention vague muscle pain. It also, according to the doctor, made my liver "unhappy". She took me off the statin (a famous name brand) and my heartbeat returned to normal. I'm working on the liver damage and now I feel only the occasional twinge. I quit sugar an processed foods, cut out the excess carbs, and I quit the doctor who caused this (though it was probably inadvertent since the training she had most likely told her it was the right move). Different doctor, different lifestyle, different eating habits and I feel much better. Your journey shows an incredible amount of clear thinking and it's impressive. If more people could be this astute, we'd be a healthier population.

After a intolerance and a blood test and my new nutritionist looked at my hormones advised me to reduce my meals and we tested fasting, in March 2021 I began the fasting (16 /8 then 20/4 ) and not looked back I'm now down to 109Kg (Aug21) I now do once a month for 96 hours and once a month for 48 hours then revert back to 23 hours per day I feel focused and have a hell of a lot of energy and no midday or afternoon slumps. The way I look at it is that our weight is a reflection of our health. Ask anyone to do OMAD, or any sort of intermittent fasting, and you will immediately notice that they will lose weight without trying or going hungry, this tells me that fasting is definitely good for your health.
@karenbuchert3377
@karenbuchert3377 2 года назад
Yes, you all showcased one woman who eats a gigantic meal for OMAD. Most folks will have a big meal but not a gorging meal. It might have two portions meat, 4 types low carb veggies, butter, cheese, olive oil, and a portion of a carb like a small bun or dessert. No insulin resistance (which you know because you have no driving cravings for foods). You enjoy knowing that this daily eating structure allows the body do what it’s designed to do over a 24 hr period in using new food from a meal, gathering stored carbs, and then collecting stored fat for energy rather than eating throughout the day, overloading the body with food, maintaining high insulin all day, and developing high insulin diseases. This lady lost 200 pounds!! She should be celebrated!! Great job, Dr Fung!! We all love Dr Fung!!!

On Aug 5th of 2021. I will have 730 days of Time restricted eating, or 2 years. Averaging 21 hours a day. Working out daily with weights and cardio and finishing it off with a 20 minute sauna session. I'm 71 and can do anything I did in my 30s. Probably the most important thing I have learned on this journey? Eat REAL food. If it comes in a package, jar or can stay away from it. Process food is a killer. The food manufacturers of today are the cigarette companies of the 1960s. The standard American diet kills you slowly.

So Dr. Joel Kahn, what if you don't gorge and actually just eat a normal meal? Then you're liver and everything will operate fine, and all of those negatives you listed don't matter anymore. It seems like you want to object to the worst-case scenario as a strawman in order to write the entire OMAD approach off altogether without addressing other ways to do OMAD. Doctor, you're not going to be unhealthy eating a serving of meat or fish and a side of vegetables with some eggs or seeds every day once a day. It is laughable that you think that. And recommending grains to people is just stupid. The "literature" as you call it tells us they are not very good for us. They make us fat, cause inflammation, have a high glycemic index value, and there's not exactly a lot of nutrition in them compared to better foods. It's pretty silly that you would recommend grains when they have been shown to be some of the worst shit we can eat.
@sebastianboninodiaz5495
@sebastianboninodiaz5495 3 года назад
Agree. Actually I think it is good to gore as a tool to get used to the IF process. Then you can move towards the diet described by Dr. Kahn combined with IF. The goal is to live longer and healthier. Valter Longo is a genius, but Jason Fung is a real fat whisperer. We need them both.
@Katie-hb8iq
@Katie-hb8iq 3 года назад
@@sebastianboninodiaz5495 I think it's better to just a have a normal meal - eating to your full. Like for me today, I ate 15-20 pieces of asparagus and about 350g of salmon. The salmon was ~700 calories, the asparagus was about 70 calories. Add in a few more hundred calories of olive oil, some salt and garlic powder, and the meal probably around 1000 calories. I would not consider this gorging, but it is most certainly enough to convince the body that you had a satisfying meal and that you weren't trying to starve yourself. For me, my body won't complain for the rest of the day, and I will comfortably burn about 1000 calories of fat (if not more from having a faster metabolism) and I won't even be hungry the next time I eat 23 hours later. I will eat though just to avoid feeling sluggish and light-headed as I am not putting minerals in my water or anything.

Not to mention Dr. Kahn contradicts himself at the end by mentioning the Daniel fast. It's a 21 day fast. I thought he was against prolonged fasting? I have been keto since Aug 1, 2018. Weight loss is not my main "why" (my why is the Alzheimer's disease that runs on my mother's side - lots of clinical papers written on the subject). Fasting has been part of my journey. Now, I am mostly meat based with occasional veg because I just feel better that way (and my blood labs are improved as a result). My Hashimoto's disease has gone from having thyroid antibodies immeasurable off the charts to the single digits. My thyroid meds have been reduced. My acid reflux is gone. My joints are no longer in pain. My memory has greatly improved. Memory is a scary thing to lose when Alzheimer's runs in the family - especially when I'm only in my 40s. My husband is no longer on blood pressure meds and he is no longer hypoglycemic. He had a heart work up recently and had a ZERO calcium artery score being mostly carnivore for the last 2 years- low triglycerides, high HDL, and normal LDL. We've lost 40 pounds each. The numbers don't lie.

Ky: It sounds like you’ve reached a plateau. Here are a few options for getting past a plateau: Increase the number of fasting hours Take a break from your fasting schedule (I take a break for a weekend, but some take a break for a week or two)... then get right back on it. Focus on eating more protein, and a lot less carbs Increase exercise, including resistance training I usually only choose one of these at a time, otherwise it’s too overwhelming for me. I typically see the break through from that plateau within about a week.

When I was in ketosis eating high fat food low carb which is difficult and not fun but what is true is the focus. Your clear as day kinda feel like your on drugs clear but it's just this weird brain working fully. Quite an experience. Everytime I eat a ton of carbs I feel slugish and slow. Everyone is different so try it and see what happens. Quick way to go right into ketosis. Just do a fast before you try keto. Say two to three days or 4 if your hardcore. Go straight into keto after the fast and your body will be doing a ton of ketones. When my doctor checked my urine I had more ketones than they have ever seen. I also got a full blood panel done. My cholesterol was the best they had ever seen. This was after eating ummm lots and lots of avocado pork rinds pork loin beef chicken cauliflower apple cider vinegar. Just look up any keto list. We can eat meat and vegetables once every 24 hours. Just make sure you are doing some kind of moderate exercise and you will never be sick and fat. The reason why people are always sick and tired as well as fat is because they eat entirely too much sugar and processed carbohydrates. If you eat junk food once a month or every other week you will automatically see a difference after eating whole foods that are not processed. Overdoing vegetables and fruit is just as bad as over doing fat and protein. If you are fat prioritize your protein intake (eat 1 gram of protein per lb you want to be) if you are weightlifting eating 1.5g of protein per lb of body weight. I personally watched my health improve in 2017 when I started doing this kind of diet didn't know what keto was or carnivore diet was. I just started fasting longer periods and eating less and less fat and sugar. I don't care who you are you can't over eat protein. I dare you to try eating steaks or beef and see how much you can stomach before you get sick (hit the wall) I incorporate leafy greens and some vegetables all low glycemic foods. No sugar or processed carbohydrates at all. I have fruit once a week and it's on days I run for the booster effect they give me. Since 2017 I went from a chubby 270lbs guy who had some muscle mass at around 29% body fat to what I am today a solid 190lbs 17% body fat sometimes I hit 13% depending on the seasonal changes. Winter I tend to pack on some fat and by summer I am back down to around 13%. I'm feeling great doctor tells me to keep doing what I'm doing. I don't crave anything. I do caesthetics because of the virus and my places to workout have been on lockdown or limited to half capacity. The good old pushups, pullups, situps, dips, and burpee's. The walking and running around 10miles a day is great too.

It's an AMAZING way to live. I have been on OMAD for 3 years now and it's the easiest way to eat and maintain or lose weight. No restrictions, no counting calories or macros. That is all a waste of time because everyone will fall off because the cravings will come eventually. You don't have to worry about any of that. I can eat pizza, burgers, chocolate cake, whatever. I work out 5-6 days a week and just LIVE. I can go out with friends or family and eat with them and enjoy the evening. These restrictive diets out there put your life in a prison and most importantly they do NOT work long-term. Supplement with a high quality whole food organic vitamin and eat whatever the hell you want ONCE A DAY. No one is eating 2000 calories every single day and that is because it's very hard to eat that many calories in one sitting and by using the word "gorge" he is trying to form a mental picture of someone just stuffing food in their mouth until they are so full they can't move. That does NOT HAPPEN ON OMAD. Ever. FUNG is the only guy up there worth any trust. That idiot on the left is so full of crap it's almost funny. No one is developing insulin resistance eating once a day unless they are literally ONLY eating candy and desserts for their meal and if that is the case you're a moron anyways. Just remember - these "doctors" are the same one's pushing the same old incorrect pyramid diet and oh let's not forget unapproved vaccines. I have been doing intermittent fasting and have lost 10 pounds. Before trying this way of life, I could never lose weight. I do not gorge when I eat. I eat mostly veggies, protein and fruit. I also cut out soda and most processed foods. I eat until I am full. I feel great and have a lot of energy. I also exercise.

Fasting is free and that’s the real problem. Dr Fung, Dr Berry, Dr Cywes, and colleagues have changed my life. Cut the crap, eat real food, fast between meals. Kraft, Pepsi, Nestle, Quaker, Kellogg’s paid big $ to convince you and your doctors to eat 6-10 times a day starting with a bowl of cereal.

I'm at day 5 of OMAD and I feel I've crossed a threshold today. I'm not hungry. That persistent urge to snack has been tamed. I just eat a normal supper and that's it. I feel pretty good, though the first 4 days were a bit of a challenge as my old snacking habits kept rising up demanding attention. But I ignored them. I don't know if this will work for everyone, but I decided to give it a shot and so far it's working for me. I think Dr. Fung is definitely on the right track here.

so you stopped omad after you reached your goal weight? did you change your calorie intake at all?. i’ve been doing 17/7 for a v long time but have had no results. i’m still doing it because it’s just second nature to me now. i’m worried the minute i stop the diet and switch back to 17/7 i’ll gain all the weight back
@alexsavage3009
@alexsavage3009 2 года назад
Yes i stopped after reaching near target goal and then i would slowly increase my eating window on a week to week basis to ease my body back to a regular schedule. Yes i also run a 16/8 naturally now because it feels best for my body at the moment. This diet ultimately taught me how to value and have a better relationship with food. Its second nature to me now to analyze and think about choices when it comes to my health. You shouldnt worry about “stopping” because omad isnt ideal life long (at least for me), you should worry about the lessons you’ve learned and where you can apply/learn more during your next phase of transformation, because i dont feel anyone should ever be done bettering and loving their own body. Again though im just one person and this is how its been panning out for me but everyones different.

@@alexsavage3009 I've been doing OMAD for 2 months and weights 4x a week and I'm losing weight consistently. I really don't want to transition from OMAD because I'm never hungry and it saves time from cooking. I also feel great, but I will eventually reach my low body fat limit. I would either have to switch to 16/8 or just eat more during my one meal.

LMAO I respect Dr Fung here, he brought the reciepts , is grounded in FREAKING PEER REVIEWED SCIENCE..and guess what? didn't need a freaking stethescope to hypnotize the audience with. He educates. I have been practicing omad for about 1 year, with a first attempt which took me from 87 to 77k, then I stopped and I stagnated then I took up omad again and fell to 71 before Christmas or I struggled to resume this diet. Finally since the beginning of the year I went to 66 then now 61 kilos, besides I do body weight and cardio (jogging, high), I started omad to lose weight but it's now a mode of life 👍

Why most doctors don't like fasting is because fasting benefits and keeps people healthy both mentally and physically. If people remain healthy and they don't fall ill, how will doctors earn their money? Doctors earn only because we fall ill. Same with those who are telling to people to diet for losing weight. The dietitians make money because people diet. But if people started to do fasting, the dieticians will have to close their shops. That's why most if not all doctors and dieticians have problem with fasting. Fasting won't make them money right. So then they think hey let's tell people that fasting is unhealthy, dieting is healthy. Those who understand this simple thing will never listen to these dieticians, doctors and fitness coaches. Eat once a day and fast that's enough to keep you healthy. Fasting doesn't profit the doctors and dieticians that's why they will always try to tell people that it's unhealthy to fast and healthy to diet.
