Such amazing perspectives about all the platforms, really insightful, thanks for sharing. Just wanted to share our thoughts on this: we were actually one of the very few creators that Snapchat allowed to make content on the Discover page (we had our own Discover Page for a while) and made all our content in vertical. However, Snapchat were never really able to build the platform and let more creators in. Eventually we left to focus on RU-vid.. interesting now to see Instagram giving a shot at Vertical videos. Can't wait to see what you create on IGTV!
I hate chronological order, that's why I stopped going on Twitter, because after a while you end up going through everything. I like being able to refresh the page and get new stuff.
we have to get congress to pass a law that users have a right to opt out of algorithms deciding what they see platforms won't do it, it's their brainwash tool of choice and it let them control over things people never notice there's also the simple problem of information overload because people always like and follow more stuff and they dont want to unlike and unfollow things they dont care anymore, you start to talk about managing and organizing your account to anyone and you suddenyl can hear the flies, no one wants to do this
Yo, I was just saying I saw that he had a Hot Ones shirt. So, he must have done an episode which would be dope, no racism, stop making comments so 2018.
tbh super hoping that youtube takes note and sees that there are innovative ways to support creators that they can adopt and now the pressure is on to do so but also SO EXCITED to experiment with a new platform!
I didn't know about this IGTV until today or how it works but if you can't sit on a laptop and watch it or go on your TV and watch it, it is dead in the water. No one is going to hold their phone in their hands and watch a vertical video for 30 minutes.
I don't think this will have much of an impact on RU-vid at all. Vertical-only video will only work well on phones. Tablets and desktops are nearly out of the question. Also, you can't beat RU-vid's live video.
Problem with Instagram is they did not allow horizontal video to upload, as a RU-vidr we all create a video horizontally for RU-vid 1080p, so RU-vid is best.

I've seen people solving this problem by rotating the video on a simple editor on the phone. Then when I watched I just had to hold my phone on horizontally
As someone already said, you can just rotate the video to make portrait videos. I do feel that they should provide the option to change resolution though and not just automatically do it for you
I'm really excited about this. RU-vid has essentially been uncontested for a while and I think the team has gotten lazy and a bit greedy. Gonna install IGTV now. Hopefully it does well!
Anything is better than nothing. RU-vid has too much power and IMO hasn't been making the right decisions for creators lately. Plus they have been squandering a lot of potential. Competition will hopefully make them work harder to the benefit of the platform and creators alike.
I know right. As much as I'm disappointed in RU-vid for throwing content creators under the bus. Unfortunately, it's the only game in town. I hope Instagram video gives them a run for their money.
Very interesting to see how this plays out. Hopefully will get RU-vid to get there head back in the game and give Creators a real good addition to a platform for video creativity
Don't even care. I want a strong RU-vid compeditior. I was a Google fanatic when they bought RU-vid and I complained that they would ruin it. Google as a whole has turned rancid. And I want a replacement for everything Google I use(d).
You have no idea how much of a terrible idea vertical video is. All media in the past has been made to be horizontal. Not only does vertical video just mess with our viewing experience, it also ruins it for many amazing video makers out there. This throws out all techniques that have been used and refined over the years. The only way to avoid this is to make content that or rotated. This would make the video impossible to view vertically and the user experience in the app would be terrible. Vertical video is the worst possible thing that they could of decided to do. This immediately throws out all content that has anything to do with capturing a computer screen. That’s just too much content and too many creators pushed away to another website.
No one can compete with youtube using the same youtube model (period). Google has the best intelligent search engine, that's impossible (physically) for other companies to get to this level, even BING is still trying but years away.
Once I saw a video about learning to play the harmonica. In the video the guy said see the other video I made called (name of the video). I typed the first letter and it suggested me the exact video the dude was talking about. That is creepy and amazing at the same time. Can't compete with that.
might work as if people will shift from youtube? no way dude. they will just reupload vids there, and the search on insta will be light years away from yt.
Thank you for this. I needed to hear exactly this to start loading on IGTV. I'm committed to working hard to turn my side hustle into my main hustle and helping my family members who are entrepreneurs along the way! Thank you, thank you!
@@chickfighter5587 there’s actually a law that states you should mention your sponsor in a video if there’re paying you to advertise their content.. idk about back in 2018 but that’s definitely a thing now
One of the biggest problems I have with other video streaming sites is the player. RU-vid's, despite it never wanting to remember my video quality setting, is the quickest, most responsive, and best to use. Others buffer slowly, changing the quality often messes up buffering, pausing might be a pain, etc.
Consilience I already use an extension that's supposed to but doesn't for some reason. But I shouldn't _have_ to rely on a third party to give basic functionality
Marques this felt oddly positive. IGtv has none of the stuff going for it aside from audience. No monetization, low bitrate for quality, vertical video, the search function feels really clunky. I can get that you want to be positive about the next possible platform in case it works, but the negatives you pointed about other platforms you didn't say about IGtv. Feels dishonest. Omitting isn't good.
Maybe because it's a brand new platform and youtube has had decades to work on theirs. Igtv in a few years will have all the youtube qualities and more, this is why it's a threat.
The quality actually looks amazing on his ig video. And vertical videos is going to take some getting used to but it’s not going to ruin it. You did bring up a good point of monetizing but, that’s probably in the works.
Le 8bit Spy example? Vertical video is just horizontal video rotated 90°. I have a problem with letterboxing videos not video orientation. A creative person will be able to make vertical video interesting. Back up your argument against m8.
I think one of the major factor for RU-vid continue success, is the simplicity and also stability of the player across platform, even on video player through mobile browser.
Matt Tyree /// You don't have to worry as there is no IGTV desktop app. Mobile only. You and I are not enlightened enough to be consuming video on a screen the size of a deck of cards.
Well, as more than 80% of internet content is consumed on mobile and most everyone has one with them all the time and less people have reason to buy computers, I don't think they lose much by not appealing to people who like the desktop experience. Pretty sure for a lot of YT creators landscape still makes more sense though coz portrait is only good for, well, portraits and filming people or individual things, but if you want to cover a scene for sure portrait will be underwhelming. Our natural vision feels pretty wide, portrait screen is like having real life as the borders of your video lol.
It’s annoying becuase I have a iPad Pro 10.5 and it’s really awkward watching a vertical video on a 10.5 display it’s better on a 5 or 7 inch display even then blah I dint want to watch in vertical
It will never replace RU-vid if the video can only be vertical, it will be shit when I watch it on my tv and shit on my lab top, can’t upload video game play ethier, I don’t think it will really take off
It wasn't designed for TV or laptop. You hold your phone vertically so it only make sense to display a video vertically. At the end of the day, horizontal video is just vertical video on its side, you won't see more or less with either.
Spektrik did you even see the side by side of IGTV & RU-vid?? Video becomes cramped and your shot suddenly focuses on one thing. Horizontal video allows for a lot more to happen. You won’t be able to upload video games, movie trailers, etc to IGTV. They need both available to even be a competitor to RU-vid.
Louis Speroni because you are literally thinking about vertical video by cropping a horizontal video. Of course you won't see a lot if you do that. If you actually take the time and understand how to compose for a portrait orientation you can get a lot out of it. Background/foreground seperation can be more distinct and compositions can be much more interesting.
Liveleak have slowly been moving towards more 'palatable' videos with YTs decline in view. They want to be in a positive position by that time. Personally I don't think it will happen.
The vertical video and the fact that I can't watch it on my TV are huge. I'm still having a hard time getting over the fact that all the pictures are vertical.
YesManQ8 yup. You don't share shit on a phone when at home. You cast it to a TV. Plus, portrait is only really good for vlogging shit. You can't have any real content that requires any real visual depth. It's too narrow of a perspective.
Great breakdown of why it is important to be on multiple platforms, and why Instagram is a good competitor to RU-vid. RU-vid needs competition to keep getting better!
The way it is going to be an actual competitor to RU-vid is when they start to realize that users of RU-vid actually consume on multiple platforms. I watch on my TV, my computer, my phone. IGTV doesn't seem like (out of the gate) that it is going to be ready for those other platforms.
@@adityakhatri2413 not really, it has a user base but it's pretty rubbish lol. Though the last time I checked it was like 5 years ago so it might have changed.
The fact that he had to say "Catch you in the next Yo uTube video" should already make RU-vid aware of what is coming for them! It's the calm before the storm
Vivek Chavan Nah, RU-vid is too good. You've also seen the mentioned competitors in the video that tried to overthrow RU-vid but got overthrown themselves. The structure of RU-vid has taken years to get built so well. So its hard to out-do it with little threats like IGTV.
They have to start some where. They cant throw everything behind this and risk losing tons of money and investors. They will do it little by little to see how things go.
This was great, MArques! I definitely second that. IGTV currently has the biggest potential to compete with RU-vid, which is a great thing for us creators.
Platforms won’t last by trying to do EVERYTHING. Think of it like a food menu. If a restaurant has a lot of different food options, it does nothing amazing. But find a place with a menu with a few options, then bet ur ass they spent their time on them to make them great
Finally!!!! RU-vid does us small creators dirty. Can’t even superchat for subs who are willing to sponsor your content unless RU-vid approves your account for monetization... which they take forever to actually do... alright... I’m done venting. Continue MKBHD.
Although i want competition, for some reason i dont want facebook(owns IG) to be the other viable choice, but hey maybe that'll kick youtube to get off their asses
EL JEFE REVIEWS right? I have subs who are willing to give me money but I can’t take it 😑 I mean I’m not even in it for the money, but that seriously could help the channel grow smh...
Agree with your competition speech! 😁 Would love to see more videos on IGTV from you because I am mainly there. Of course, I'd still come back to watch more RU-vid videos too.
My only problems with You Tube: too much ads Age restrictions Demonetisations I still love you tube, but I feel like those issues need to be addressed.
Hot Ones hot sauce on our right, MKBHD in the middle rocking the Hot Ones T shirt. This guy Rocks! I dig both channels. Thanks for sharing and as always Keep Building👍
Couple of things worth mentioning that no one has addressed yet, but I will in a video. IGTV is 1080x1920, so unless you can shoot in 4K, the videos will be bad resolution, as you would be upscaling video from 1080 vertical to 1920, yuck, not to mention for big creators with editors, editing a second format or even shooting a second format is a killer. And secondly and most importantly, any company who has done its due diligence in regards to the eyes and watching vertical video, would know that the eyes can very easily scan side to side, but not up and down, this makes watching vertical video extremely problematic for long periods and even for short periods for many people. The level of fatigue will be massive on IGTV and people will stop watching. Oh and not to mention all ads will need to be remade. I’ll make a video on it to explain better.
Desktop uploader, yes! Stereo sound? Will be checking it out for sure. Vertical videos for phones is of course the perfect consume format. For long videos though, like 30 minute videos, an hour (are they allowing that yet?) For that kind of content horizontal would be a nice option.
Competition is good. This will be the thing that makes RU-vid step their game up. RU-vid has secretly turned into a form of social media. It's pretty cool. I just don't want RU-vid to die 😂.
Geoff Blah true, but RU-vid isn't Myspace, RU-vid isn't stuck in their ways. They have embraced a lot of things so I think they'll probably continue to do okay. Despite Instagram being late to the party, there is room for another player and growth.
