I tend to agree with Bernardo Kastrup's view that all metabolizing organisms are conscious and have experiences, but that only humans are fully meta-conscious, that is, they can reflect on, and report, the content of their own consciousness and experiences. What is usually described in psychology as the un(sub)conscious, is that part of consciousness that is usually not accessible to meta-cognition, but impinge on our meta-conscious experience through such things as dreams, visions, intuition, imagination etc.

But with his own direct experience with psychiatry, it would not be unlikely that he was familiar with psychoanalytic thinking, and more specifically with Jung's analytical psychology.

It is experience says Pirsig. But what is experience and what is "That Which Experiences" (TWE)? Bernardo Kastrup recognize that: "experience necessarily entails a subjective field of potential or actualized qualities", and that "TWE is this field." .... "TWE and experience are of the same essential nature. More specifically, experience is a pattern of excitation of TWE." The reason I quote Kastrum is that I personally find his mapping of metaphysics (Analytic Idealism) helpful in getting a handle on Pirsig's MoQ.

simplification of differentiation of 'static' from 'dynamic'.. like boat wakes.. signatures of expansion of dynamic patterns just become less static as boat moves(direction of expansion in 11 dimensions) so static is simply less dynamic than dynamic 'is' . in helping reader see boundaries.. imho.. like a fluffy sweater(jumper).. a fluffy 'latch' but a latch nonetheless. evolutionary drive away from fluffy boundaries ... the boat wakes slowing behind of less dynamic than dynamic(train engine aka the boats bow)
Bob should maybe have, intermittently, throughout both books, have reminded the reader to ensure their own thinking does not fall into the generally societal crass definitions, in the minds eye, of the words 'Quality' 'Values' 'Morals'... but to constantly remind oneself while reading of the less easily describable semantics of those wordings, etymologically speaking.
