On Toy Pianos - Episode 1: Goldon

This video is the start of series on an instrument that has fascinated me for a long time - the acoustic toy piano.
What interests me about toy pianos is that they sound innocent, yet they can easily morph into sinister. Their basic sound is simple, naive, yet due to the stresses of time most toy pianos drift into their own, off-key tuning, with no way that I know of retuning. Each toy piano sounds unique, even from the same manufacturer. Sadly, these instruments are dying out, as the process of playing them also destroy them, with no service available. So with this series I hope to capture some of their magic.

Slight correction to the information in your video. I work for Schoenhut Piano Company ( www.schoenhut.com ) and we do still sell a handful of Jaymar models. While they are not advertised, if someone wishes to purchase a new one they can contact us at 1-888-414-2739 or info@toypiano.com

I recently got one from my Nans that we used to play 30 years ago I think it's roughly 50 years old and I'm currently refurbishing it and it's a nightmare. Great fun when I was a kid and wanted my nieces and nephews to enjoy it like we did. Now I wish I didn't find it lol.. I can't stop working on it and it I keep finding hacks to fix one problem but it never ends. I'll be 80 and still working on it. The Sheonhut did provide me with hours of great fun at the expense of anyone around me I just wish I could get parts. Do you sell parts for the insanely old models?

2 years ago I found a 49 key Jaymar in good condition from OfferUp for $40!! I managed to fix a couple muted/broken keys. It’s almost perfect...1 key’s rod just needs more steel added for perfect tuning. 4 octave toy pianos are so rare, I couldn’t believe I found it. It’ll be with me forever

already in love with this series, absolutely beautiful broken little things :) i wonder how younger people will or do relate to these sounds as they offer immediate nostalgia and emotional content for those who had the chance to hear / use these toys at some point (not in the Hainbach way tho). it must be wonderful to see how the audience reacts to this in theaters! :)

Broken keys can be fixed. The most difficult thing is to remove the part of the string from the base, I use some oil, and beat it. Then, it is necessary to have a donor. I usually have some spare strings. Such way I restored middle C on my Goldon toy piano.

I discovered your videos a couple of weeks ago, and you have inspired me SO much. I actually have a lot of the gear you feature in your videos, and for years I had been doing recording experiments, tape delays, playing with micro cassettes, reel to reel, kalimbas and homemade acoustic instruments, circuit bending, etc.. but at some point a couple of years ago I sort of ran out of steam. I have been plunking around with drum machines and synths, losing focus, and you have inspired me to get all the weird gear back out and start playing with tape speed, clicks, clanks and hiss. Thank you.

YES! (i use exclamation marks rarely) You & I have the same interests in Toy Piano sounds, i'm just interested full stop lately in innocent/cute sounds & how they'd contrast in darker contexts. I know the Yamaha Reface CP has a toy piano mode in there. But as you said, it would be nothing in comparison to an authentic old one.

THERE IS A WAY TO TUNE THEM! You tune them the same way you tune a Rhodes. Little springs on the tines. It is more like you are tuning the overtones but it does help with tuning in general!

you can try to repair the broken keys with 3d printers, the important thing is to take the weight and center off mass right (maybe they won't be as nice as the originals, but functionals), and the hammers souldn't be that difficult to be remake. love the sounds and how you are able to take the ambient music live to another level!
@Hainbach
@Hainbach 5 лет назад
Thank you very much! Yeah, hammers are easy. But can 3dprinting create sounding tines? These are mostly the cause of these not working. Keys are strangely indestructible ( I misspoke in the video, with broken keys I meant the tines).
@channtron
@channtron 5 лет назад
oh, the tines should be reworked or redone maybe with a lathe , but the problem would be the steel they are made from. i suppose that every brand might use a slightly different type. And that is expensive :/
@jean-pierrejoubert6140
@jean-pierrejoubert6140 5 лет назад
I wonder if the tines couldn’t also be fine tuned by adding solder. I remember reading that this method is used in tuning Fender Rhodes tines so it should be applicable here, too, at least for those who are out of tune but whole.
@channtron
@channtron 5 лет назад
Jean-Pierre Joubert yes, or adding any other weight to the end, solder and filling would work.
@Hainbach

Oh, I gotta try that solder method. But Rhodes tines are way shorter and thinner, so that would have less effect here.

Cool, looking forward to this series! I actually want to make my own toy piano, using a chopped up piano keybed (from a "real" piano) and making my own metal rods. What I don't know is how to make the metal bar to mount the rods - to many varaibles I don't understand, and I don't have access to one to copy. So - if a request is in order I'd very much like to see close up vids of the metal bar and info on how that whole thing works and how it's connected to the resonant chamber. :-)
