I mean, id disagree. In the MCU at least. Sure cap is talking about being held accountable themselves rather than to the government, but he also doesn’t offer any idea what that means It is arguable that, at the start of the movie, his negligence caused the deaths of a whole lot of civilians But he’s not exactly offering any suggestions to take account for that. Let me be clear. The idea the government running the heroes wouldn’t cause problems isn’t silly. But at least it creates accountability. But what happens if cap keeps fucking up? What can be done to actually change things if the heroes keep getting people killed? (Now, not saying they’re responsible for everyone they fail to save, but the inciting incident of the movie makes decently clear things go down bad due to the haste of the heroes leaving gaps for shit to go south that a more measured approach may have stopped) In the comics it’s Cap all the way, partly due to the zero tolerance methods of the iron man side, but in the movies? I always saw cap as kinda just being dismissive of the idea that anyone should tell him what to do.
@1mag1nat1vename
@1mag1nat1vename 3 года назад
@@urieldaluz250 I want to start by saying that I'm Team Cap, because the government shouldn't own our good deeds or regulate heroism. With that said... Weakening Cap's stance may be a feature of the movie. If the writers and director made the choice of who to side with more clear, there wouldn't be a "civil war" among the audience. That was the point of the movie, not encouraging American freedom.

As a german, "All quiet on the western front" is a must-read in school. And i absolutely loved it. There was one scene I would like to repeat and try to phrase it in english. The main character is fleeing with his comrates while leaving granades behind:"We became perilous beast. We do not fight, we defend ourselves against pure destruction. We dont throw our grenades against humans. We dont understand humanity in this moment, no, we know that there is certain death behind us and for the first time since three days we can face it. We are raging because we can defend ourselves against it for the first time in three days. We dont lay unable to move in the trenches. We can destroy and kill in order to save ourselves and to avenge. Behind every corner, and every barbed wire we hide and throw the explosions at the others. This explosion carries us and makes us faster, changes us into highwaymen, murderers and into devils. [...] If your father came with those on the other side, you would not hesitate to throw a grenade against him."

I don't have Kindle, but I'll preorder the paperback when it comes out. Also, this video made me realize just how deeply ingrained the scars to national identity the civil war in my country caused are. I'm an American, and I am only just now realizing how much the north and south, and by extension the people who ideologically align themselves with those two historical sides of acwar from so long ago, still are divided politically and socially in America. Even for people like me who are generations removed from the war itself. Hardly anyone is still alive who fought that war, if any even are. But the wounds are still there in each of us. I didn't think writing advise would get me to examine that. This video also made me realize that in order to make the civil war of my setting make any sense at all, I'll need to construct believable reasons for it. I just kinda handwaved that before. An unstable state will be necessary. Racial tensions between the human citizens and probably second-class dwarf and halfling citizens (if they have citizenship at all). I don't want it to be a matter of oppression of their culture in favor of assimilating to the national identity of the ruling class, because that kingdom is rather syncretic and would welcome integrated cultural practices. But I feel that that also means racial tensions against annexed nations would be unlikely... Kind of a puzzle for me, but I'm sure empirialism has a variety of ways to create national conflict and instability that I can play with.

Just trying to offer a view "from the outside in"(?) to help you maybe see a few directions worth exploring... (side note) As a GM, I rarely get to "hand-wave" very much as my Players tend to ask questions before they "dive headlong" into a campaign... so there's that. Consider the segment (vid' reference) about socio-economics... With your story about an Imperial setting, I'm thinking in reference to Rome. Expanding an empire "done skillfully" can render nearly immediate returns (looting, for instance)... BUT wars are expensive investments... SO it's obviously very easy to over-invest. (for books, consider "The Art of War" or "The Prince"... and you might want study partners, or someone to help discuss the points as you go) Rather than necessarily target "Racial Tensions" for second-hand citizens from a "middle of the plot"... I'd suggest you begin with the simpler question, "After a conquest, what do you do with surviving 'enemy citizens'?" Rome often encouraged "Slaves" but (in the earlier eras) this was tempered with a "prescribed path to Roman Citizenship"... or rather, several of them, depending on the details. AND what went "bad" or turned from "bad to worse" over those matters was more about the growing numbers of "not so Roman" citizens of Rome... This led to ever growing legislation and prescriptions about those paths to citizenship, making things steadily harder and more exploitative to the "slave classes" without totally cutting them off. You can see a similar set of factions arguing in the U.S. today. Some are convinced that foreigners are coming to saturate the employment market, working cheap, and there are accusations of tax evasions all around for hiring immigrants... While some are equally convinced that the U.S. has always made it a strength for letting just about anyone into the country and giving a path to citizenship with just the effort to learn the law, some history, and enough English to get around... It's probably not a very new argument. SO you've already got the possibility that either incompetence, miscalculations, or miscommunications have pushed the Empire's funding to its limits... trying to expand in poor choices and over-spending on this "conquest machine". Obviously political factions will start harboring accusations of lunacy and corruption for an Emperor who protects Generals who can't lead their way through battle without hopeless losses that can't be recovered in short terms... WHILE others are equally "correct" to point out that as an Empire expands, it's conquests get larger, and larger campaigns are simply more expensive. You've got a burgeoning expansion of citizenry, whether of the ruling class/race or not... AND whether you call them "slaves" for their induction to society, or you propose an "indentured servitude" to learn the local language and culture, apprentice for a trade, and build their citizenship foundations... um... exploitation feels like exploitation to most. SO there's going to be some bruised egoes and feelings. Obviously, social factions are going to creep into trends. Some believing that the land is rightfully earned under "trials by combat" and blessed by the gods, so it's righteous to indenture their looted slaves... for a time... Some might even go so far as to point out that if these "enslaved peoples" were so worthy, they'd have won against the Empire and kept their lands. (victors and spoils... etc.) Others will view the whole ideal as more and more about greed and egregious violations, depending on how often and horrible you wish to color your enslaving types... and don't sweat too much which side you WANT to be "right". Just be careful about how you distinguish it in the details... and if you color some faction as "bad" even generally, you shouldn't hesitate to give even a rare glimpse into just how truly awful it can be, with nobody "so much as batting an eye" about it. ;o)

gnarth d'arkanen all that is well and good, but none of it is relevant to the kingdom of my setting. It isn’t a conquering empire, hasn’t enslaved the halflings and dwarves in any capacity, they have rights of citizens, and it’s dominant ruling class IS a particular race. I suppose it doesn’t HAVE to be this way. But it doesn’t have to be any particular way, and I don’t feel like completely rewriting what I’ve got to match a different arbitrary model. I’d like to focus on reasons the dwarves and halflings of my setting rebelled against this kingdom as I wrote the kingdom to be.
@gnarthdarkanen7464
@gnarthdarkanen7464 5 лет назад
@@twi3031, here's your problem then. This empire of yours seemingly uninterestingly expanded its way out, adopted the halflings and dwarves and GAVE them instant rights as citizens. The ruling race apparently doesn't care that they've raised this empire and "earned their stripes" as it were to rule, so giving away full citizenship including all amenities and capacities to whoever is now suddenly part of their domain, regardless of what might or might not be added to the empire from them. 1. Economically speaking, it simply doesn't work that way. This is why we study historical empires to be able to write compelling stories about fantastical ones. 2. It's going flat because you've simply written out anything "negative" about empire building, and that's not going to float either... EVERYTHING has a benefits-versus-deficits list. Okay, so I don't "KNOW" whatever it is that functionally constructs or propels your personal empire... That's probably because I haven't bothered to steal the idea myself, or maybe you didn't share it... to begin with, leaving me kind of blindly shooting in the dark. Empires are built as monumentally huge economic tools. Emperors use taxes they levy across larger and larger swaths of land to invest in things to stabilize the Empire's internal structures... those pesky things like roads and bridges, or passes full of bandits that need occasionally exterminated so businesses can consistently grow. In turn, the businesses find a wealth of stable environment to GROW, and build more wealth, from which more taxes can be garnished for the Emperor and his/her epic planning and engineering... That's the ideal trade-off. AND historically (on Earth anyway) it's generally a direct function of military CONQUEST, but if you want some other fashionable method, by all means ENGINEER THE THING! Just don't bitch at me for going historical because without YOUR input, I got nothing else to insert for supposition. In ANY case, there's got to be some underlying difference between the ruling Race and the "adopted"(?) races inherent to their rights, class, or something. Otherwise, you've just flatly constructed a Utopian dream and nothing's going to happen... It either doesn't make sense, or there's no point. ;o)

I also immediately noticed the Amazon "Not for Resale" that came on my first test copies as well. May 30th marked on my calendar! I shall also be sending you a copy once I get my next shipment.

I have to say, I loved the editing on this video. Specifically where and when you focused on vision and captain America. Your videos are so thought out and visually represent what your saying with all of the intended undertones. Thanks for using pop culture, or just western culture. You speak to a wide audience, lots of which listen, but I just want to say that this video helped me with my project, and I'm really grateful that you put so many things into perspective.

Can’t wait to get my hands on that book! I also was curious about the element of romance and how it works in fantasy, adventure, sci-fi novels, without it taking over how the story is told. I’m curious about your thoughts on this subject.

Congratulations on the book. You are right to think it's beautiful. Props to the artist. I'm happy to hear that you want to do more nerdy content on avatar, seeing as those are my absolute favorite videos of yours. I was wondering if you might talk a bit about the S02 finale of Korra(I know I know, just hear me out). Specifically, I was hoping you would talk about one word. "Dissipated." This is the term used to describe the final action taken against the ultimate force of chaos in the universe, and it is glossed over AT BEST. In fact, this word only exists in the descriptions of the episode, and no where in the series itself. The outcome of Korra's spirit bending in this moment are unique. Every other time we see this technique used we see different results, yet when done to the dark avatar(for lack of a better term) the target turns to gold dust and floats into the ether. I am eternally curious what the implications of this are on the lore of the universe. What does the struggle for balance look like in the following decades, or centuries?

First off, beautiful cover. Secondly, my favorite civil war to write about is a civil war that occurs right after an actual war. Like currently, in a FanFiction that I'm writing(cue the eye roll), it focuses on a woman who is transported into Wonderland and she finds that Alice had pretty much become "another version of the Red Queen", and that a large number of members seceded from the nation due to not liling the way that she was running the country. Actually, they dont like the fact that she is running Wonderland and they want overthrow the monarchy.

I’m ASOIAF the Starks are in no way exceptionally rich... they are an ancient house, but there’s no particular resource that causes the Stark lands to produce a super large income. Maybe the Manderlys have money... far more than the starks.

Just a little clarification for those needing it. The song playing behind the Deus Volt Infidels at 9:25 is The Last Stand - Sabaton (well worth listening to,) which is not itself about the crusades. It is about the sacking of Rome by the mutinous forces of Charles V of Spain in 1527. The song refers to the last stand of the Swiss Guard who gave their lives to save then pope Clement VII.

An idea for an On Writing video would be magic weapons and their role in narrative. Something that can be used as a source is The Rising of the Shield Hero. Watch the series and you will understand. Other sources you can include are Aang and his staff, Thor and his hammer, King Arthur (I think you know what weapon), Eragon (from Lord of the Rings) and his sword, Sauron and the one ring (because it is a weapon), Sokka and his meteor sword (lots of swords) and boomerang, Jedi knights and the processes of making their lightsabers, Harry Potter and the sword of Gryffindor, Batman and the battering. I'm sure there's a whole lot of material to draw from and you could even collaborate with Shadiversity!

I may have a good video idea, but it also may not be enough for a full topic. You could make one discussing how to create a believable, coherent history for a story with a world building focus. You might even compare it to writing history in a plot focused story, if there would even be differences. Honest suggestion from a huge fan!

Definitely going to pick this book up. After 8 years of writing seriously I thought I'd covered most of the niches in my efforts, but as of viewing your videos over the past year I've picked up on fantastic pointers. Actually, your trilogy on building empires was the most influential set of advice I've gone over and had me outline some core revisions to my plots.

Me personally this series The all of two episodes I watched of it as dramatically improved my attempts at writing an outline and helped me to understand just how much more work I have to go on the first real serious attempt I am making at writing an actual story wish me luck cuz I am definitely going to need these books, especially seeing as I can't write dialogue emotional scenes or anything outside of very generic battle scenes to save my life

You talk about people writing about the horrors of WW1 and you didn't mention Tolkien and the Dead Marshes? I really like how Bethesda wrote the Civil War in Skyrim. Sure, the questline itself is duller than a wooden butterknife until the climax, but the NPCs talking about it makes it seem like a really complicated and ultimately heart breaking thing (Angeline's daughter or the relationship between childhood friends Hadvar and Ralof are prime examples).
