Here is my absolute favorite tool as a bass player. PALM MUTING!
It is a very simple way to control the tone and dynamics of your playing. I starting doing it when I was younger and over the years I have obsessed over how I can deepen my capabilities with this technique.
I wanted to cover as much ground as I could on this particular topic. We start with the technique and approach to anchoring your hand to the bridge. Then we dive into the concept of using your hands like a compressor and noise gate. From there we dive into a couple of chromatic walkup exercises to help build strength in your thumb.
Then we hit dynamics control, real life application and my favorite - the muted slap.
I know most bass players use this technique but I will admit I don't hear it talked about and explored as much as it deserves - that is why I'm calling it my secret weapon.
As a recording bass player and live bassist, this tool is a must use on a daily basis.
Let me know your thoughts, I hope this helps you find something new to experiment with and most importantly, have fun with.
And I can't thank you all enough for viewing the channel - it really means a lot. The recent subscribers and comments have made me super motivated to explore more topics - thanks to everyone for checking out my videos!
I hope you have a great week.

Great content, I am more comfortable playing with my thumb than my middle and index fingers and thinking it is a bit unorthodox but then I saw your video, gives me more confidence..thanks

Solid video. But I gotta be honest, for me to stumble across this video I must've fell down deep into the bass rabbit hole

Hey, Great subby sound your getting. Are you using flats on that jazz with the neck pickup? I've been bringing this into my own playing more lately and particularly like the muted slap sound you can get with an aggressive thumb pluck and pop while muted like you did. I actually just used that in the outro of a reggae-ish tune we just recorded.

Hey thanks very much for watching! Yes I am using flatwounds and in this whole video using both pickups - getting a nice mix of some muddy low end tone and a little bit of cut from the bridge pickup.

Love the sound, but I heard (from someone) that recording engineers usually disapprove of that kind of muting on a count of it being too "boomy". Have you encountered this before or have tips to mitigate it (EQ perhaps) ? New subscriber btw.. these are super useful tips!

Hey dude! Thanks for checking out the vid, I appreciate the comments - I have encountered some of this way of thinking but I usually just wind up cutting below 50-60 hz anyway on my bass tracks because I wind up layering more sub bass in there - that seems to help it in the lower frequency. I think between that and being really safe about your gain staging upon input you can avoid anything too boomy or clicky. Also be mindful of how close your thumb is getting to the actual pickup itself - sometimes that causes some noise issues while attacking with your thumb and other fingers. Hope that helps and thanks for the sub!!

@@carmeeno I agree; cutting below 70 Hz, even, is standard, good and necessary. What sounds good about the lowest frequencies is their purity, more than their volume; and booming is typically a speaker box design problem; not a note-length problem. A proper bass-reflex design will refuse to boom, will deliver undistorted low frequencies, and the good damping will allow the speaker to follow the envelope at note-ends, without extending the notes. The only argument about palm-muting and boominess would be that the extended thumb tends to pluck further from the bridge than one might otherwise pluck, which does favor fundamental against harmonics (more bass sound). Perhaps this is the reason why Danny Mo Morris mutes with the left hand, fretting with his index finger only. By the same token, it depends on the tone one wants. To sound more like an upright bass one has to pluck as far as possible from the bridge. In any case, boominess is solved by a 70Hz high pass for taste (on headphones), and a proper speaker and box. Playing technique should follow desired tone and dynamics. And on the other hand of the other hand, one can always use a sponge under the strings next to the bridge for muting, too.

@@privateerburrows Great stuff - thanks for checking this out! Yes, I was always fascinated but struggled with muting via my left hand. I should brush up on it and perhaps do a video on that style in the future. I actually studied with Danny for a couple of years at school, what an awesome guy and player. It always gets interesting when plucking between the pickups in terms of tone, there is so much versatility to be explored in this instrument. Thank for the comment and thanks for watching.
