CLIP DESCRIPTION:
Sy (Robin Williams) explains his troubled motivations to Detective Van Der Zee (Eriq LaSalle).
FILM DESCRIPTION:
Funnyman Robin Williams steps out of character in this tense, low-key thriller that marked the feature-film directorial debut of music video veteran Mark Romanek. Semour "Sy" Parrish (Williams) runs the photo processing department at a large discount store; Sy is dedicated to his job, and takes great pride in his work. Sy's favorite customers are Nina and Will Yorkin (Connie Nielsen and Michael Vartan), an attractive and cheerful young couple with a nine-year-old boy, Jake (Dylan Smith). Sy dotes on the Yorkins and their son whenever they drop off film to be processed -- something they've been doing quite often ever since Jake was born -- and Nina and Will are indulgent of Sy's attentions, regarding his as a harmless eccentric. What the Yorkins don't know is Sy is a desperately lonely man with no real life of his own, and he's been obsessively making copies of their photos, for years, imagining himself to be "Uncle Sy," a member of the family. Sy's tenuous hold on reality begins to collapse when he develops a roll of film brought in by a new customer that suggests Will has been unfaithful to Nina; the notion that his ideal family may be falling apart is troubling enough for Sy, and when he loses his job, Sy reaches the breaking point. One Hour Photo was screened in competition at the 2002 Sundance Film Festival.

It's so sad how Sy was abused by his father. By taking the pain away of the horrible images taken of him, Sy made pictures of Beauty & the positive things Life has to offer in his later years. Seeing Mr. Yorkin betray his Family broke Sys ideal fantasy of a better world. You can even see the cringe on Sys face while he had been orchestrating Mr. Yorkin & the mistress. Haunting memories catching up with himself. Then there's here, where he lets everything out with obvious hints into his childhood. Absolutely Brilliant Acting by Robin Williams. The film really takes us back to the Golden Thriller Age of Alfred Hitchcock as well. Incredible Movie!

It's crazy how Sy can tell that Eric LaSalle ' s character the detective is a good man, Husband, and father by the way he responded to Sy asking him if he was married and had a family. And he's right. I personally think that this was Robin Williams best performance. Definitely Oscar worthy.

Yeah, but the interesting thing we don't know for sure Sy is projecting what he ideally has always wanted all along by saying the detective is a good husband who would never cheat; Sy just assumed all that from seeing the detectives wedding ring. Sy doesn't KNOW any of that for sure... the detective could also be cheating or abusive to his spouse and kids... we'll never know.
@xlxl9440
@xlxl9440 Месяц назад
@@shiningfaceofluzon5594 that's true that Sy is definitely projecting. But I think that it is more than just the wedding ring that brings Sy to the conclusion that the detective is a good man husband and father. He mentioned that he could tell by the way that the detective treated him during his interrogation what kind of person the detective is. And he also extrapolated it from the detectives response when Sy asked the detective about his family. He noted that the detective tell him that his family is none of his business is the detective being protective of his family. And these are the factors that I think leads Sy to the conclusion of the detective being a good husband and father.

@donegal7
@donegal7 Год назад
I don't even think's its fully that he wants 'a family', I think it's more that he is evidently traumatised and depressed from the activities he was exploited to as a child by his parents, thus he focuses on the Yorkins, who are [to him] the clear example of the perfect family. However, his mind was so fragile from the abuse that when he found out the family wasn't as perfect as it seems (husband having an affair) he had a mental breakdown. It wasn't loneliness or his lack of a family that drove him insane

It's so brilliantly captured you can't help but feel sorry for Sy and the sufferings he endured all his life. You can tell the conversation softened the detective's heart when he said "thank you for being so candid". Robin Williams and his versatility was out of this world. From goofy personality to caring educator to cold blooded killer to lonely despondent stalker, the man was born to grace the universe with his unparalleled talent and deftness. Sly was abused by his father and his father degraded him and made him take off his clothes to take dirty pictures of his son and so he did the same to that couple in hotel and was so lonely that he was dying inside and his apartment was white and it meant death and Sly was a lonely sad character that Robin Williams played and yeah his performance is very creepy and it gave you inside to Robin Williams's soul! I am sure that Robin Williams showed his beautiful side by making people laugh and but underneath it all behind the laughter something was going on! I think its sad that Robin Williams died and he had the world at the palm of his hand and he even had an oscar! I don't think anyone knew the real Robin Williams and to be honest I dont' think people really know each other when people present themselves as happy go lucky or one that had everything for them its all an act! No one knows what goes on behind closed doors! No one! I think people put on masks to hide their true selves because they are afraid of what people will think of them! To be honest this is a example of what happens when you treat people like Sly terribly and people Sly are afraid and angry and that explains why Sly did what he did! He was living a lonely shattered existance and you don't know the back story of his past all you do know is that he wanted this connection with this family and deep down he wanted a family that would accept him! One Hour Photo was a good thriller but it was scary too! People are scary they always have been and always will be!

Brilliant acting by Robin Williams. A truly powerful and sad scene when Sy rants and makes that speech about child abuse and Will Yorkin's betrayal of his family. It reminded me a bit of the ending of First Blood, when John Rambo made that speech about the Vietnam war and the tragic, gruesome loss of his friend Joey, which was really good acting by Sylvester Stallone. It really gives you a lump in your throat "You would never ask your children - do things children SHOULDN'T DO! You would never take DISGUSTING SICK PICTURES of your children doing these things!!" that moment was so moving and chilling at 0:42. You feel so sorry for Sy. It shows how deeply disturbed and mentally unstable Sy is and it shows Sy's humanity and sensitivity pouring out and it hinted that Sy had been abused as a child by his father and the horrible evil and despicable things his father forced him to do in front of the camera, left him with emotional and psychological trauma and it left him a lonely and mentally ill individual and he had felt The Yorkin family was the family he never had and because of his illness - he became an obsessive stalker whom followed The Yorkin family and stole copies of their photos, which he kept for himself. When he discovered Will Yorkin was having an affair, it brought back the painful memories of his own father and it caused him to snap and go vigilante. Sy is a damaged lonely man suffering from obsessive and psychological issues and Robin portrayed that outstandingly and so realistic. One Night Hour is one of the late actor and comedian's best performances and one of the films and performances he'll be best remembered for. RIP Robin.

Yeah Sly was abused by his father and why he stalked this family was because his family abused him ... his own father and there are a lot of people who are like Sly around and they are lonely damaged people and Robin Williams did a great job playing this lonely, desperate, trapped, unloved unstable man who wanted to be apart of someone's life! Sly should have been put into a hospital! The whole white image is death, Sly was dead inside and the Yorkin's family were a sense of hope that this family was to him "NORMAL!" He just wanted to be apart of someone's life Sly was abused and humiliated by people all around him! Sly was completely haunted and this movie gave me the chills! I can't see Robin Williams as the bad guy but he did a great job!

But what's the use whining about it/blaming others for your own insecurities and weakness? Instead just try to grow as a man lol ... idk

Sad. His only two things in life were taken in an instant. A fleeting moment. If you’ll notice, everything in his life is a series of greys, whites and beiges. Everything except his savmart uniform and his wall of pictures. His job gave him purpose. The yorkins gave him the chance to live vicariously through them (mostly the son). Sad movie. Such a tragedy.

Yeah...when I watched this movie...I told my mom for the first time that I was abused...she didn't understand what Sy(Robin Williams) was saying...and I explained through my years that he was abused...then she asked me if I was... I'm convinced that Robin Williams was abused, and that curse laid upon him...ultimately claimed his life, 😱😭(emojis seem inadequate to explain my feelings-too cutesy- but they work as a base description)

@@thesurvivorssanctuary6561 That's a pretty complicated theory to make about Robin. He was an actor. Actors have methods for getting into the minds of characters with lives different from their own. Robin could've just done some research on sexual assault victims, childhood abuse, mental illness, etc, and use that information to a) provoke a emotional reaction out of him, or b) connect the dots in Sy's actions and establish and backstory

He mimed me & my friend Connie, 2 young teen age girls , at Union Square.S.F. OMG it was awful, it was simply awful, until Connie and I were watching this new Show Mork and Mindy. We both said at the same time "That's the guy who mimed us" because of his clothes he was in white face....we were beyond embarrassed when it happened and never talked about it, Until Mork and Mindy... we bragged. My husband and I years later were at a winery along the Silverado trail, I think it was Sterling Vineyards. Hubby went up to get some wine, I didn't drink, so I was poured a "vintage" grape juice. I heard a voice from the man sitting at the next table, behind me, acting like a drunk, He said someone like "stop hiding sister, we both know them12 steps" I turned and it was Robin, I told him about the miming and that's why I started drinking, grape juice...he did that laugh and said, I said you MIMED ME, he clinked my glass,"it must have been good you still remember it".... God it was a great moment, that laugh, when My new hubby got back to our table Robin said to him I'm the man who mimed your wife FIRST- that's the way we both remembered it and we stoll laugh with a bit of regret that he left so soon.

“The things we fear the most have already happened to us.” I kind of hate the fact that I accurately guessed the entire backstory & motivations of that movie’s character (hence why I found him more sad than scary), but I was scared off of even headcanoning that thing, imagine saying mistakenly something that messed-up until-I was right! I guessed from his impassioned, but idealistic speech about what photographs represent (“I existed. I was young, I was happy, and someone cared enough about me in this world to take my picture.”) and how obsessed he is with vicariously living through photos of a happy family. It’s truly a testament to Robin Williams’ masterful acting and the amazing script that I, as a child sexual abuse victim myself, could sense a kindred spirit in Sy’s character and thus understood him so quickly.

A lot of people compared "Taxi Driver" and "King of Comedy" to "Joker" (over very surface level things IMO), but personally I instead found a lot in common between Arthur and Sy. Both of them imagine a happy life with people they're attracted to, both of them are psychologically troubled after a tragic childhood.

R.I.P. to the late, great Robin Williams. Equally brilliant in serious, dramatic roles as he was with his many comedic ones, and this was one of his very best if not his best. He made Sy both sinister yet sympathetic, but you can tell he was never truly malicious with his actions and longed for a happy childhood and family life he himself was robbed of. Such an excellent performance from an exceptionally talented man who's sorely missed everyday.
