CLIP DESCRIPTION:
Sy (Robin Williams) messes with his former boss' head by giving him an envelope of pictures of Bill's (Gary Cole) daughter.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
Funnyman Robin Williams steps out of character in this tense, low-key thriller that marked the feature-film directorial debut of music video veteran Mark Romanek. Semour "Sy" Parrish (Williams) runs the photo processing department at a large discount store; Sy is dedicated to his job, and takes great pride in his work. Sy's favorite customers are Nina and Will Yorkin (Connie Nielsen and Michael Vartan), an attractive and cheerful young couple with a nine-year-old boy, Jake (Dylan Smith). Sy dotes on the Yorkins and their son whenever they drop off film to be processed -- something they've been doing quite often ever since Jake was born -- and Nina and Will are indulgent of Sy's attentions, regarding his as a harmless eccentric. What the Yorkins don't know is Sy is a desperately lonely man with no real life of his own, and he's been obsessively making copies of their photos, for years, imagining himself to be "Uncle Sy," a member of the family. Sy's tenuous hold on reality begins to collapse when he develops a roll of film brought in by a new customer that suggests Will has been unfaithful to Nina; the notion that his ideal family may be falling apart is troubling enough for Sy, and when he loses his job, Sy reaches the breaking point. One Hour Photo was screened in competition at the 2002 Sundance Film Festival.

The scene when he comes out to his car and sees that someone has broken his windshield then has dinner alone at the diner is so heartbreaking. This is such a good film because from the outside Sy looks like a creepy guy, but when you get the back story that he was abused, lonely, isolated and had one misfortune after another you feel so sorry for him. You truly see how he got to this place when all he needed was some friends and human companionship aka a place to belong.

@@burnaardnufc3173 He was a serial killer ?
@AstrosElectronicsLab
@AstrosElectronicsLab 21 день назад
@@BlackangelKatakuri no, burnaardnufc3173 was just making a valid point. Most serial killers, people that do things to non-adults, people that are depraved and commit lewd acts on innocent people mostly all have a heartbreaking back story. Mother held them too long, not enough, late-night sneaky uncle. Name your cliché. It still doesn't excuse the actions of that individual. In Sy's case, he was just a lonely man with a terrible childhood and upbringing at the hands of adults, whom you are supposed to trust (see the final clip 5 of these series, kind of sums it up), and mentally still kind of child-like. Pent-up hurt and rage for things that happened in this character's past had to go somewhere. Eventually, he snapped, threatened Bill using pictures of his daughter (probably for Bill firing him in the first place), and then went to the hotel after Will Yorkin and Maya Burson (my belief is because Sy saw the Yorkin's as a happy family, so infidelity was not part of the picture [pun intended]). So, you have multiple, complex things with this character. As they say, there is a chain of events that lead to causality, not just one. I know this long-winded comment really has nothing to do with your original question, and it's possible it wasn't a question that needed an answer. More like a statement of "are you serious?" to the OP. I could be wrong, though...

I’m surprised Mark Romanek hasn’t had a more prolific filmmaking career. I don't believe Sy had any intention of harming Bill's daughter, that was just him getting one over on his former employer. Sometimes it’s also done as a sign of power. I once dated a girl who felt no chemistry. The subsequent dumping was understandable, but the “If you ever come back to my hometown again, I’ll call the police and have you arrested!” was over the top. That was twelve years ago and I have been back to that hometown many times since because I don’t give in to that kind of mumbo jumbo. The police were never summoned.

A shop this size would have hundreds of ex employees around town and by the law of averages some of them would want to shop there. There's clearly no store policy about ex employees shopping there or Bill would have quoted it. Keep in mind that Bill, as Sy's boss, has seen Sy lashing out whenever he gets upset and had fired him for, among other things, yelling at a photo technician and using extra prints for the Yorkins' photos (to add to his shrine of photos, though Bill didn't know that) for YEARS without paying for them (which is a rule-breaker at a job like that). Plus, he'd gotten upset with Bill while being fired when Bill had warned him not to screw up a customers' prints. Bill, IMO, had every reason to believe that Sy was there to cause trouble at the very least (remember, there had been more than a few cases of a fired employee coming back and shooting up their workplace even then)...So Bill was in the right here, IMO...

@dantheman8103
@dantheman8103 6 лет назад
Don't think the boss was a real prick, at least in the context of the movie. Sy was printing photos that no one was paying for which is basically stealing and cost the company money. And he was giving out cameras to customers who didn't pay which literally is stealing and costing the company money. There is not a store manager out there who wouldn't fire their employees for that. That isn't even counting that he was performing poorly and causing scenes with customers. Yeah, it was because he was coming unhinged, but the boss didn't know that. Hell, if he had let Sy just continue to do what he was doing the boss would have ended up being the one to lose his job. And honestly, few people would let you finish out the week when you were caught stealing from the company, that was beyond generous.

Exactly but Sly wanted his revenge and he was strange and he starts yelling at his boss , former boss andyou can tell he was angry and did you know that in his house he had the pictures all over the wall of the Yorkin Family! He day dreamed about them and he wanted the Yorkin family as his own. He hated his own family! Sly managed to go after the family and he makes the father take pictures just like his father did to him. The woman in the bathtub was shaking and crying? WHY ! The Police Officer was trying to connect the dots and then he understood. His apartment was white and there was nothing in it! The music sense a odd vibe! Strange movie if you ask me and Robin Williams was strange in that movie!

You know if Sy hadn’t done this then he probably wouldn’t have got caught. He must not have cared at that point - his job as a photo developer had been taken away from him when he was fired and his idea of the perfect family had been shattered due to Will’s affair - so I guess he had that “nothing to lose” mentality on deck and ready to go.

Very chilling. When a person gets like that, it is one hell of a warning sign. He had no intention of harming the little girl, but he was unhinged enough to want to make the implicit threat despite knowing it would surely bring him police attention, all just to get at his boss psychologically. When a person starts disregarding their own reputation just to get at another, it can escalate damn anywhere.

Some of us , including myself, sympathize with Sy because this movie is about his tragic life, but BIll is not a bad guy, cold maybe, but not bad. He's a guy trying to run a business, and his reasons for firing Sy weren't unreasonable. Gary Cole's character of Bill is a big symbol of Sy's world around him. Cold, unforigiving, and still having something Sy wants ... a family! There's a key line in the scene where Sy gets fired, where Bill says, "I Have a family", and I think Sy reads that saying, "How dare this guy think his life is more important than imine, just because he has what I don't". But again, it's what Sy wants. He envies people with families.

How did Yoshi know what Bill's house or daughter looked like? In these kinds of big box stores, there's not usually such a personal connection between workers and managers that you'd get to meet each other's families. Unless SavMart has some annual family picnics going on.

If you watched the sequel, you would know that Yoshi was in fact stalking Bill's family for years beforehand, and framed Sy. Yoshi swapped the roll of film that Sy brought in and presented them to Bill. He hated Sy, he thought he was too enthusiastic about his job. When he came in to develop the roll of film after being fired, it brought Yoshi to the breaking point. Yoshi turns out to be the real villain in this story. He was the one responsible for the print count discrepancy, Sy actually covered his tracks. But Yoshi was printing countless images of Bill's family. Eventually Yoshi ends up almost killing Bill, but Sy saves the day. You should check it out. It was released on DVD only.
