Yep, more to break. I had a Titan from 2004 to 2019 and the stock V8 was 305 HP. I Now have a 2019 Ram with the 5.7 Hemi, 398 hp, no turbos. I fear now all manufacturers will only equip 1/2 ton pk with turbocharged motors. Theirs not much gain with the mpgs, and may be slightly more powerful. The V8s are dependable and has been around for decades. Also I dont trust GM 4 bangers, especially the turbo in the 1/2 Chevy.
GM engineers also said the ignition key was not a problem. Look at that recall. In the 70, GM engineers thought it was a great idea to take a gas engine and put diesel heads on it for the Cadillac. What I'm saying is GM engineers will say anything to get people to purchase a vehicle, and to be honest so will all engineers for any manufacture. So don't lead a pile of BS on what an engineer at the company says. But, research, it was NOT built as a future diesel. I will say, it was used for many years, pretty good engine.
It really is the last of its kind. Same with the Titan. I love my 22 frontier and I was a Toyota Fanboy for YEARS. Nissan took Toyota’s game plan of it ain’t broke then don’t fix it. Toyota has copied Ford and Chevy.
@@elche1976 you cant even make an attempt at saying the Chevy will outlast the Nissan , its physically impossible that pile of shit will make year 5 without major expenses. Iv owned Chevy my whole life with an aggressive maitenance history on each Chevy vehicle to the point of it being absurd. The second you turn your back and the babysitting stops they fall apart, every time, the Nissan will run for extreme periods of time with zero to minimal maitenance required, Im sure you understand substandard engineering leads to a substandard product.
@Panther Martin77 sounds like a lot of excuses for your crappy driving. I seem to be able to do it with chevy, Honda, toyota... all last. Like they say... a poor pianist blames their music on the piano. Maybe you need to get better at taking care of things instead of blaming the object for you being terrible.
The reliability is there. You have no data to back that up. Just "I think". I went from a Taco 2012 TRD Off Road to a Ranger Lariat FX4.. First the powertrain is night and day better. I live in Wyoming and at elevation the turbo doesn't turn into a dog. Second my Taco had 2 warranty fixes in first 15 K (AC went out and leaking shock). Ranger at 30K. Zero issues. Nothing. Like new. I will never ever ever go back to NA engine. The torgue is insane and so much better. Nothing against Nissan, but they can keep it.
@@drn13355 As a Former Ford service advice advisor a can tell Turbos is not for everyone, if you know how to drive it, you are good, but the new trend is put a turbo in small engine and that's will be okay. By my experience I know, but once again it's work for you that's perfect, and just go by all the problems that I saw in the road 🤷♂️.
@Phil Easler Phil, I have a turbo in my Maverick AWD and it runs great. I posted some videos on my channel with a full stop on a steep icy road in Park City, and driving again with minimal slippage.
I love my Pro 4X, but still was wondering if I was going to trade it in for a new Colorado. Now that I know what the pricing is, I would be an absolute dummy to want to trade my Frontier for a Colorado. Besides, the quality and reliability of the Frontier just don't compare to the Colorado. Frontier all the way!
The colorado is actually cheaper the the frontier. Both the trail boss and Z71 are cheaper then the pro 4x and both are 4WD. The only ones they will be more expensive are the ZR2 and ZR2 bison.
@@chriskolaska897 You forgot to compare the equipment that comes with them. You will never find a Colorado that's fully equipped in an off-roady version for the price of a Frontier!
@@chriskolaska897Not happening.😂 you won't get a Colorado equally equipped to the Frontier for less than $55000 not to mention Nissan always has banger lease deals unlike the Colorado.
Pretty much agree. My thoughts are if it does not burn diesel fuel, a turbo is a scary engine; especially, when made by GM. (And I have owned a lot of GM trucks but unless a diesel all have been NA). Other problem with the Colorado is the integration with the info screen with items such as headlamp control, etc. I don't want to sit and push the screen three of four times just to manually turn on the headlamps. I want a solid switch on the left of the steering column on the dash panel or the turn signal stalk. I'll also state, that us old-timers appreciate hydraulic assist PS; especially, if on dirt trails. The EPS is for non-performance cars.
My biggest gripe with the Colorado is the obnoxious package dependencies. You can't just add certain ones without forcing you into others, and if you don't get some of them, you don't get *standard features* (like Andrew on FLT found out mistakenly omitting cruise control). This is usually the case with most makes/models, but Chevy brought it to a new madness level.
This is the first video that I've seen of yours, and I have to say how happy I am to hear you discuss reliability. It doesn't matter how well appointed a vehicle is if it's going to leave its owner standing on the side of the road two weeks after the warranty expires. I've seen so many comparisons done in videos that completely ignore quality and reliability. Thank you for making this a part of your analysis.
Reliability is hard to always talk about with brand new vehicles and new powertrains. Where possible I do bring it up though since it is a key part of the buying decision. Glad you enjoyed this one!
If the next-Gen Colorado is equal to or better than the 2nd Gen, then 100% Colorado. My 2017 has been a champ. Bought it in 2017 after my Frontier transmission failed.
@DevilDog53 he said a 17 and i did as well and mine crapped out at 45k miles between having to do the brakes every 10k miles and going through 6 sets of brake pads and 4 sets of rotors and having Nissan's engineers come out an go through an replaced the entire brake system and still had the same issue then the rear differential goes out at and this is an in 45k miles lol.
@Bikes0420 lmfao no, unfortunately, that was not the case buddy, and i wish it was, lol. It didn't matter how i drove. The breaks would go out and never once hauled anything with that truck. I had the entire break system redone, and it still happened, so i got it lemon lawed. Truck was a real cheap piece of shit as everything on that truck was really, really cheaply made. Hell, my driver's side seat was almost fully worn out at 45k miles.
It's good to hear honest comments especially about anything general motors I work for general motors for over 25 years and watched them deteriorate, and experiment with the public, even though I'm not a fan of Nissan, you change my mind about purchasing a new Colorado I'm not a fan of turbocharged engines, keep up the good honest commentary.
I worked for GM Arlington Truck and SUV plant for 31 years and as times changed the build process became very innovative and bullet proof over the years, everything is close tolerance and the product won't move out of station unless all the computer programmed torque parameters are accomplished. You can't make a mistake without the build system letting you know about it. All vehicles are made with robotics and safeguards to prevent mistakes in today's production plants. Basically all auto products are pretty close to the same quality because of work practices and innovative, dummy proof build systems. So please don't tell me that one brand is built better than another brand. GM, Toyota, Nissan and Ford would not be in bussiness unless they built decent quality products. It all comes down to design and personal preferences in what your idea of the perfect truck is for YOU.
I had 2018 SV, would only get 12-13 mpg in town, 19-20 on the highway. Loved the truck hated the mpg. Was going to trade it in ‘22, dealer was marking up $11.5K I walked away.
I just got a '23 Pro4X, the ride is great, getting 19+ in town. Fit & finish (seats) exceed the Taco by a long shot. Had an H3 that was basically a Colorado drivetrain. Shop queen, bled my wallet. The turbo 4 seems really cool, but there are many 1 million Mile frontiers. How many GM trucks say that? [ my first truck was a new '89 Chevy S10, I'm not a brand loyal koolaid drinker for an any brand, just a realist, Japan makes reliable trucks]
The H3 had the 1st green colorado drive train in it which i agree was crap. The 2nd gens we're a huge improvement and are petty reliable as mines been pretty good to me.
I owned a 2005, 2019 and my 2023 SV. Mine have all been primarily for off road here in the pine barrens and on the beach surf fishing. The new one is very capable both on and off road and it will turn without needing a landing zone.
Almost $60k for a GMC Denali vs Frontier maxed out at $48k, I will take that extra money in my pocket and deal with cameras not being super HD. I do like the new interior on the GMC but still not worth the cost in my opinion.
As a mechanic, I've always believed that Toyota's vehicles were a notch or several above the other makes. I was waiting and waiting for the new 24 Tacoma's to come out and when they finally were on the dealerships lot .... I pulled the trigger on a 24 Frontier Pro 4x instead. Just can't accept a little 2.4 turbo as the only powerplant. Love my tac green Pro 4x, NA 310 hp V6, and thousands under MSRP to boot.
Frontier, the 9spd is so smooth and I’m not sold on Chevy’s claim that they fixed all the issues with the 8spd. Sometimes old school is the way to go especially with all the manufacturers going to turbocharged engines.

I recently got a 2023 Nissan frontier pro- 4X boulder gray with all the options except for the leather and sunroof the reason I went with frontier is because of the reliability also, it has a lot more room than he made it look in this video.
I traded a 2019 Ranger for my 2023 Pro 4x . The back seats are a lot larger than the Ranger . I looked at the new Colorado but wasn't as impressive to me as the Nissan was.
Owned 2005 Colorado Crew Cab for 16 years, it was my favorite vehicle. But when I decided to buy a new truck recently, I found that the Frontier PRO-4X was actually more like my old favorite than the new Colorado. On the Colorado test drive, I kept banging my head getting in and out. I fit better in the Frontier, plus I got way more for less.
Love my new frontier Pro-X with all trimmings. Just filled in rear frontier logo with black 3d logos to offset the Boulder grey and waiting on the grey logos to put on the black hood logo. And replacing the “pro-x” emblem on the bed with “nismo”. And just ordered the Nismo hood graphic. $375 is a lot for basically a big adhesive sticker, but sometimes you gotta do what you gotta do. Japanese trucks are sick af!!
If I had to buy one of these tomorrow I would go with the Frontier. You can still get it with a long bed and to me that's huge as I haul a lot of stuff in my bed often. I really don't like the trend of trucks to only come with short-beds.
@@marcpikas2859 got a 20 yr old f250 for that. Although it is a pain getting into a gas station and grocery shopping. More of a farm truck in its last days
At the 11 min time stamp you wandered why GM allows you to still "build and price" a 2022 Colorado, because they will not make one anymore but you can spec one out and still search and price a similar specced 2022 Colorado out of current inventory that dealers still have
All day long I would buy the Nissan if it was the old hard body 4 cy engine ,I personally knew and myself 6-7 hardbodies that have went 330 k - 700k on same engine !
2017 Pro-4x owner from new. The most reliable, well built (no rattles/squeaks/broken parts) vehicle I have ever owned. Great off road, good for highway (comfort is good). Easily park it in my garage. Lots of power and torque. Three things I dislike 1) gas mileage isn’t great but it’s a 4 wheel drive v6 2) turning radius is terrible 3) original tires (Hankook Dynapro AT-M) weren’t great for wet and snow. Terrible on ice. I swapped them out for K02’s I plan on keeping this truck for as long as I can. Love it. Hopefully the new models are just as good.
Great video! Both are on my short list. My biggest issue with the Frontier is payload. I will be towing a 2,900 lb camper and camping gear in the bed and back seat. The Colorado seems to offer more real world payload (it also tows more by at least 1,000 lbs). However, reliability is very important to me. I am impressed with the numbers from the Colorado’s turbocharged engine, but is it reliable? Is that 8 speed tranny in the Colorado reliable? I like that the Frontier gives you options with the bed length. The deciding factors for me: price, reliability, and function (payload).
@@patricklachance3187 You will exceed payload by quite a bit. Tongue weight alone will put you almost at payload limit, plus passengers, stuff in the bed of the truck, etc.
@@wwz1011 Total load with my family, the gear and the trailer was 6300. I drove about 9000km through Canada and the US: flawless. I almost didn’t feel it.
The 2.7t (IMO) has done well for a turbocharged engine. When compared to the V8's that is currently in the Silverado. Particularly the V8's that utilize both the AFM and DFM. The 2.7t has actually done better than the V8's. Despite the 2.7t utilizing the AFM as well. Tyranny is a different story. I haven't heard too much about it in terms of reliability, in the Silverado after the 2022/2023 update. GM has stated that they fixed the issue with the previous gen 8 spd with the new 8 spd coming out in the 2023 Colorado. But that only goes as far as when it comes to real world driving. But hindsight if the 2.7t is doing better than the current V8's, all using the AFM or DFM. If you were to do a AFM delete on the 2.7t it could probably do better in terms of reliability. The only questionable part is the tranny.
I like the Colorado looks all around...by far in my opinion the best looking truck out there, inside and out. Frontier is nice looking, but the back seat is so small that kills it a bit for me. I am worried about the 2.7 in the chevy but I think if I were to be getting one I would probably take my chances with the Chevy unless I could get the Frontier for WAY less comparably equipped.... I tend to go lower trims so I would have to compare that way
I have last model colorado and love the experience my first truck but it lacks a fair amount of tech which new one has and a huge upgrade in the interior so ordered it a few weeks ago.
@Darth Bane what model do you have cause I've got a 16 Z71 and completely satisfied with the tech it has. Maybe it's just me since I switched over from a frontier but I think the tech it has is pretty good and up to date.
I checked the GMC. Liked the truck, know the engine is good, but price was almost 50k OTD! Ended up buying two Frontiers, one 7k under MRSP and other with leather others upgrades for 10k of MRSP! ❤❤❤❤
Sorry bro,but the American made frontier pro4x is a mans rugged truck!!! Pound for pound all the truck a man can ever want with a great warranty. The government motors truck is a nice ,pretty truck for soccer moms. Give me the rugged American nissans titan and frontier pro4x with awesome na engines . 4 cylinder turbo is over complex and expensive to maintain. I like hard buttons and knobs in my trucks all the digital hi tech crap is expensive unreliable crap but then again woman like lots of glittery accessories like Gucci purses👛 ha. I think the girls are gona love the government motors ride. As for me im gona take my rigg up some rocky dirt hills and load my hockey gear and cane corsos in the back and have some affordable fun. See ya!
Frontier all day. The cooling system alone in the Colorado 2.7 is too complex! The Frontier is cheaper, has a 100k mile bumper to bumper warranty and is almost guaranteed to be more reliable, especially in the long term. Lots of mileage in a short time is nothing, how it will hold up ober the course of 10-15 yrs will really define a vehicles reliability.
I think I am leaning towards the 2024 frontier pro 4x. I'd really like to get a lift with bigger tires for off road trail riding. The Colorado, especially the trail boss looks really rugged, which I wish the Frontier had more of that exterior design. My one big, huge gripe with the Colorado Trail Boss, there is no led headlights and not even a led fog light that comes with the truck. For a off road trail riding truck, I feel that chevy just cheeped out on this with their customers. So, I think I may buy the Frontier Pro 4X over the Colorado and the new Tacoma.
Last year it would have been a 100% Frontier. Now with the Colorado refresh in and out, it is a very hard decision. I think the electric-steering and lane-keep-assist,... leans me towards the Colorado. Price may make the Frontier the easy winner.
American car companies sure do put the boots to us, I have a 3500 ram diesel which works good and I like it, but after that its asian for sure. frontier is a nice truck and seems like good quality. GM is overpriced and not sure of the quality now days. probably all ok so buy what you like
Been the 4 cylinder GM turbo route. They ignored easily correctable problems for well over a decade in the cruise and compact SUV market. Hope you like buying new intake manifold and valve cover every 20,000 miles when the pcv system blows out. Also my dad and brother both had Colorados and got rid of them due to transmission problems early on. GM says they've got it fixed but they'll say anything you want to hear to get you to buy a truck. Show me the reliability for my money. So far I've got no serious complaints out of my 22 frontier. It just does what it's supposed to do.
Once upon a time I had a 2002 Frontier and my gripes back then, back seat room, the bed size and the MPGs with the supercharger. Two years later I traded for a titan crew cab more comfortable then the Frontier. I had that truck for 13 years very dependable, but the paint and interior were cheap, and I traded it for a 2019 Ram 1500. Now the Ram is a Cadillac compaired to the Nissan's I owned in the past. I just the Ram will last as long.
Love my 05 Frontier, it's my jeep, and it never needs to go to the shop. Would probably pick the frontier. My only concern would be the traction control buttons on the new ones being hidden by my knee. I use those quite a bit.
I'm telling you right now what this guy showed for pricing and what they are really going for is absolutely different. This video is claiming you can get a pro 4X for 40k well that's a lie man. I went to the Nissan dealer not that long ago and was looking at the 4x2 SV. They wanted 43k for it so yea you're looking at over 50k for a pro 4X that still won't be able to hang with the colorado.
@@chriskolaska897 I just bought my 23 titan pro4x for 52 out the door at my local dealership and frontier pro4x was going for 38k you might want to shop around bud. lol hang with a colorado...shm you sound like you don't actually get out on the trail bud.
@@chriskolaska897I got my pro4x for 48k out the door. And it's almost fully loaded. A base pro4x starts at 40k, mine was stickered at 45. The only package I don't have is the pro premium which would have added; leather seats, sunroof, auto dimming mirror, different wheels and a garage door opener 😂. I already have the fender audio which also comes in that package...but unlike GM you can order it separately since GM likes to force you into packages to get a specific feature. And they had a couple there fully loaded for under 50k. MSRP. That's before even getting into any discounts, rebates or incentives.
@@chriskolaska897 also wdy mean it won't hang with a Colorado? Be specific, it won't hang with a ZR2 but it will absolutely keep up with a trail boss or Z71....and I say on paper is more equal to a Z71 Unless your talking straight line speed of which nobody cares about...its a truck, not a race car 😂
I am in the market for new truck this year. I will be going with the Frontier as I want a extended cab (King Cab) with a 6ft bed truck and the Chevy / GMC doesn't offer those options and the fact that the GM twins do not come with a headlight switch anymore is another major negative for me so Frontier it is.
Unless Nissan just mucks this new line up the platform is pretty much bulletproof. I have my 2007 Nissan Frontier XE still kicking at 245K. I laughed at when I sat in the new frontier and how much old DNA is still there from my truck generation which isnt a bad thing if it makes the truck last for ever. I have tried to blow my 2.5L 4 banger and the damn thing just keeps going. Hope to finally give it a new Pro 4X sister to play with in the near future.
Because I like my trucks to last a long time and have fewer rust spots I would and did choose the Nissan. If Chevy used an aluminum body and their engines weren't typically problem children north of 100,000 it would be more even. I have seen Chevy trucks on the lot with rust already showing on the frames and dodges with rust on the body after only a few years. I have had scratches to the metal on Nissans unrepaired and still showing no rust or blisters after several years.
@darthbane2669 Chevy uses a wax coating on their frames. Once that starts coming off, it is near impossible to slow up the rust. None of the underbody coatings stick to the wax.
The new Colorado is super sharp. The interior is refreshed with that huge screen and the way the engine is built with some diesel like aspects I’m going Chevy for sure
@@markashby8219 if you payed attn or go online you will see that you can upgrade to the high output engine for about 1,400 bucks so yea that's not really a big deal. Also Nissan's track record for their trucks is not very good. They're built very poorly and don't last.
@@chriskolaska897 you willing to bet money that your Turbo 4 banger Colorado last longer than a NA V6 Frontier? If so, you’re gonna lose that money Chief 😂 tell me you don’t know cars without telling me you don’t know cars.
Ya the Colorado is more pricey, but look at that Nissan interior. It looks so old. The biggest advantage I see is that you can choose different bed lengths. That's it. Chevy just makes better trucks
There is no comparison. The Frontier is a BETTER, more affordable truck. Add to it a normally aspirated V6 that uses the same gas as a hokey 4cyl turbo. The Nissan will still be on the road 15 years from now while the Chevy will have long since died. Japanese quality vs GM...... There is no comparison.
I’d buy the Frontier between these 2, just because I don’t trust GM’s quality/reliability. Plus GM got rid of a normal headlight switch. Now in their touchscreen, how stupid.
@@EdMiF I’m on the other side, I like to manually turn on my parking lights & headlights when I want to. The Auto lights don’t always match the darkness or turn on in the rain. Which is a law where I live.
I was worried about the reliability of my turbo when I picked up my FORD Excursion 20 years ago. Now at 310,000 miles with no repairs to the drive train, I don't worry about it any more. Oh, and I'm in the Upper Midwest snow and road salt country.
@@ryanlavallee3239 no they weren't. Not reliable. I lived with a MR2 Turbo from the 90s and it always had a problem. Boost leaks, oil burning, cracked manifolds, and more. Even Supras had their share of turbo issues. Ive had custom turbo builds that I had to rebuild the turbos themselves within a few years. 6 psi was all it took. Nowadays 20 psi is basically normal.
Other than the extra ratio in the trans and the 3.8 liter normally aspirated V6 I prefer everything else about the Colorado.Considering that the Nizmo is more expensive than the Trail Boss I would go for the Chevy. The Canyon is overpriced IMHO as I use my truck as a... truck.

@Chris Kolaska the heated seats and wheel are option packages now for the z71+. Of course different packages. The cooled seats are another package. I priced it out the new z71 is 10k can more. The 22z71 comes with it.
@Chris Kolaska I'm personally looking at getting a 22 z71. Still has the v6. Radio craps put your not screwed. Decent mpg, price wise it's the same as the trailboss which isn't great interior and the plastic front bumper seems cheap to me.
Yeah Reliability is #1. 14 years with Sierra and can't complain. 2 -3 year leases with a Silverado and I ain't ever coming back!!! Taco or Ridgeline!! The Employees of GM will always buy. FYI I can get plan also but can do better or at least the same without it and I don't have to take it back to the dealer every month! :)
This is not hard to figure out, Nissan Pro 4X all the way! If you wanna keep a truck for the next 15 to 20 years doing meticulous basic maintenance Nissan all the way. If you wanna lease for the next three years then try the Chevy. I test drove both cause I’m in the market for a midsize 4WD, hands down Nissan.
Good review Tim. Just want to point out that I'm seeing big discounts on Nissan Frontiers in the Southwest. I tried one out in December and price was MSRP. Now I'm seeing $1800 off the Pro 4X and one dealer even called me and said "I need to move Frontiers" and suggested I could get an even better deal if I came in. On the used side I see Pro 4x models from 2022 with several thousand miles for mid $30s. Surprising that you got 20+ MPG in 4x4 hi. My thinking is that you could do quite well with the Frontier if you make sure you're in 9th on the highway. It's a nice truck!
At the end of the day if you choose a Frontier, well, you own a Nissan. It gets worse gas mileage, tows less, slower, outdated interior, and the exterior looks dated compared to the Colorado. It’s a no brainer for me.
Not a GM or Nissan fan, maybe the Colorado if they kept the V6 albiet 400+lb torque with the new 2.7 turbo 4. The Nissan may be naturally aspirated but for me I owned 2 Nissans in the past and they were garbage, Murano and Pathfinder. Two of my brothers had Maxima's that were also plaqued with issues and my Dad has a Rogue that is not bad but not great either. So I think I'll role the dice with the Chevy but I would choose the Ranger or Tacoma over both if I ever were to go midsized instead of a full sized truck.
No kidding. The 2018 Colorado V6 I just traded in got worse mileage than my 2023 Silverado 3.0 Duramax. That little truck served my very well, but was simply too small. The back seat legroom was rather bad, and the 2023 redesign is even smaller.
@D Vader Darth? I like your name. I just needed a small truck and though not as capable, my Maverick AWD only cost $31k with lots of lux upgrades like heated seats. Only tows 4000 lbs which is plenty for me. I show it in videos on my channel driving up some unplowed streets in Park City with no problem.
I own a 2013 Frontier with 112,000 miles and it is still going strong. I understand the 2024 Frontier will still have the 3.8liter v6 with turbo. I’ll stay with the Frontier it’s just more reliable
