Some of that was probably down to the drive train overheating on the Mini towards the end of the lap and significantly reducing power, but the Kona is a surprisingly good performer considering what it is.
And I think by the numbers the bolt actually handles slightly better than the Kona. Although he mentioned that the Kona feels faster and feels better. That doesn't surprise me since it has an independent rear suspension and the bolt just has a torsion bar style rear. But I saw an autocross event and a bolt EV with decent tires on it actually ran an autocross faster than a Volkswagen GTI with the DCT trans which I thought was pretty damn impressive.
@@0ooTheMAXXoo0 , the Kona only has 9% more power, but is 27% heavier. This should give the mini a significant advantage in power to weight. The mini was on for a *much* faster lap until the power was throttled. The lower the voltage, the harder the battery has to work to deliver the current (more internal resistance), so it heats up more. At the same 90ish percent battery, so the temp didn't overload, I would suggest the mini would be a fair bit faster than the kona. The last 1/3 of a lap for the mini was little more than cruising. Amazing to only be 6 seconds down actually.
Oh man, you could mount dirty bricks to your bare wheels and you'd probably get better performance than the Nexen tires the car comes with. They aren't even the most efficient tire. Put Michelin Cross Contacts, Cooper CS5, Pirelli Scorpion Verde, basically any a/s tire and you'll get better efficiency than the stock Nexens. They ride like crap, no grip, transmit lots of road noise, and have sup-par efficiency.
@@een2102 for me its about a 15% drop. on the stock tires in summer I saw as high as 350, with the crossclimates its 290-300. either way they are both above the estimated 258.
Thanks for the tip about turning off both traction and stability control. My Kona ran great this winter - you can't argue with fixed gear FWD and very smart regen.
I would argue that AWD would be a big argument for winter driving in deep snow. My leaf is much less confident in the snow than my Subaru when it comes to getting out to the driveway, even with great winter tires.
We swapped the (terrible) OEM tires for some Toyo All seasons. I love the idea of the Whiteline springs and rear sway bar that apparently fit! maybe some better pads for the sticky brake modulation isse
Great video! I'll be very curious to see how it compares to the Bolt. We have a 2020 Kona Ultimate (same as this) and a 2019 Bolt. Subjectively on the road, the Bolt feels a little more composed to me. When leaving the traction control on, it is also much less twitchy and nervous than the Kona which seems to overreact and make the car feel unstable. The Michelins on the Bolt also feel better than the Nexans on the Kona. But, the Kona has a much better rear suspension setup (multilink independent VS the Bolts torsion beam) and feelings don't always translate to the numbers.
My wife and I bought a Kona EV last year! I've been wondering if hard driving would effect the battery life in the long run? or by how much. I've been thinking about a local autocross.
I'm actually pretty excited and intrigued by this video. I recently purchased a 2022 Hyundai Kona electric and would be interested to know what is a good summer tire especially out here in the Fort Collins / Loveland area for a vehicle mostly around town but would probably take it on short day trips as well working up to longer trips and possibly across the country.
I just grabbed an old leaf, it lights up the front tyres at too, all electric cars make their ICE counterparts look slow! It’s the only time in history I’m in the 1% club :) ICE cars won’t last long, Change is coming :) power companies are running their hands in preparation for the shift to electricity. I thought they were gimmicks like little wind up cars till I drove one :). P100D on ludicrous mode was my introduction to EVs ! What an introduction it was !
He turned off traction and stability control, but I hope someone can tell me when I do need it and why he wouldn't want it on the race track here. What are they for?
