Ten thousand bonus points for doing it yourself. I love how you were strong enough to get the job done and even stronger to use baby steps and little helpers along the way to get the truss up. You work like me. I want to do all I can by myself too.

Nah. Thought about it but a truss package was just too convenient to turn down, and Im sure Id screw something up making them on my own. for 1700$CAD I got the trusses, two sets of ladders and 20 mini-trusses or eyebrows.

One of the things I love about your camera work is how you vary the position of the camera which allows for a very detailed look at the process. Don't forget to credit the music you use.

When I worked as a carpenter 20 years ago, we always put a plank walkway where there weren't walls to walk on. If you had cut some 1 inch tapered wedges and screwed them to the 2/6 you could have pushed the trusses up ridge first. Or, pulled them up with a rope

I built myself a 25 x 30' this summer and putting the trusses in upside down was a pain spinning them up alone turned out to be very difficult. Luckily my neighbor ended up letting me borrow some scaffolding. Made the whole process much easier. Took about 3 months to finish it by myself but saved me about $20k over hiring someone. Great job looks really good.

I built a 12x24 cabin with 8x24 enclosed front porch. so 20 x24 cabin. Three times i needed help. putting the trusses I made up (I used a jig on the floor to make them), putting the plywood roof up and the roofing itself. The interesting part I made it to take a tree hit, then cut the trees down that could reach it. Then the one tree that could just hit it with the top 16 years later. No damage.

I think this is pretty cool. I wish more folks would be doing work like this. This is America at it's best. Well done. I am not a builder just my feeling and humble opinion of this video. I am working on my own already built garage right now. I am looking for ways to beef up my own and ran across this video. Cool, just cool, to see folks build things.

Lifting trusses on a building this small is easy. Bring them in with the top facing down. Lay one up on the wall then the other end. Take a 2x4 and near the upside down peak swing it up so you can nail a 2x4 or 2x6 ride plate bridger. Then swing the top up into place and push with the 2x. Repeat this for the rest and then join with cross boards. Notch in and install the barge rafter supports then the barge rafters. Trim the ends to a common end and cut smooth. slap on the facia board remembering to plane it into the future level of the roof plywood. This means you just put the long edge of a speed square along the top of the rafter and lower the soffit edge board till it planes in smooth.

Yea, in the video I mention that method but I was curious to try the method I used. I have now done both methods and I found that the method I did in this video was much easier once I got the hang of it. I'd never do the method you suggest again.

@iveneverdonethisbefore8390
@iveneverdonethisbefore8390 10 месяцев назад
I can’t remember the exact technical term but I believe they are called “ladders” and you can see them go up in Part 3 around the 1:35 mark. They attach to one of the last trusses so the over hang ha good support.
@fraziertom

Great job! I will be building a similar shop/garage next year. Did you build the trusses yourself or have someone build them? How much do they weigh approximately?
@iveneverdonethisbefore8390
@iveneverdonethisbefore8390 4 года назад
I think the weights are in the video description. But they were somewhere around 120lbs. I ordered the trusses from a local company, they were about 1600$CAD which included 13 trusses, the ladders with the fascia attached to them, then 26 tiny trusses for the tiny roofs on the gable ends above the garage doors, which I have shown in any of the videos yet.

I apologize if I’ve missed it in the video, but was is the pitch of the roof? Also, are you okay with the 20x24 or do you wish you would have done a 24x24?
@iveneverdonethisbefore8390
@iveneverdonethisbefore8390 3 года назад
It was a 6/12 pitch. I wanted an 8/12 but that would’ve put it higher than the township would allow, and I didn’t want to go through the hassle of applying for a variance. However I’m glad because a 6/12 pitch was right on the cusp of being comfortable working on the roof, 8/12 would’ve just a hair too steep. Definitely wish I could’ve gone 24x24 but I have a skinny lot and I couldn’t. 20x24 still allows us to get a Ram 1500 and Volks Golf inside with no problems.
@dghcnu07
@dghcnu07 3 года назад
@@iveneverdonethisbefore8390 thanks for getting back to me so fast! I currently have a quote for 20x24 but to go 24x24 would be an extra $5k...do you think it’s worth it? I probably will park 1 car in there but I don’t anticipate parking 2 cars as I live in a warmer climate so don’t see a lot of snow/extremely cold weather.
@iveneverdonethisbefore8390
@iveneverdonethisbefore8390 3 года назад
@@dghcnu07 I was always told that no one ever regrets going too big but there's a good chance you'll regret going too small, however if 5k is a big deal to you then I think you'd be fine with 20x24. Curious, how much does it cause to have a 20x24 built for you?
@dghcnu07
@dghcnu07 3 года назад
@@iveneverdonethisbefore8390 it’s right at $22k for one that looks exactly like yours. I am located in the US. So a 24x24 would be right around $26k-$27k. That’s does not include electricity

@iveneverdonethisbefore8390

@iveneverdonethisbefore8390
@iveneverdonethisbefore8390 4 года назад
@@fistoroboto9539 Try the method you usually see one person do, flip the truss upside-down, then lift each end of the upside-down truss onto the walls one end at a time, then flip them upright using a long 2x4 with the end notched so the tip of the truss doesn't slide off the end of the long 2x4.

@stephengutsch6366
@stephengutsch6366 4 года назад
Awesome job however you say it’s not dangerous doing what you were doing walking across because you could just hang onto the truss if you fall, can you hold 1000 + pounds? because you’re looking at least that much force when you fall and come to a sudden stop. Fall suppression gear is so important, I’ve known too many people that have died with simple stupid accidents.
@iveneverdonethisbefore8390
@iveneverdonethisbefore8390 4 года назад
You're somewhat right, however this is just a small garage, only 9' off the ground walking along that plank. Sure, injury could still happen only 9' up but it would be rare, and didn't happen. Thanks for commenting.
