Bluesman Kirk Fletcher gives some tips on playing over Major chords. Blues guitarist often struggle playing of non Blues songs with major chords. Kirk takes a very simple concept of playing less and saying more with dynamics and phrasing like a vocalist would. If you would like to support Kirk here is a link to a gofundme setup for his album release "Heartache by the Pound" gofund.me/cf06... ‪@gibsonguitar‬

Kirk, I am super blessed to live in Nashville and hang with you at the local guitar-bar (TM, GT haha) from time to time! My wife and I also coming Sunday to see you with JD at 3rd & Lindsley. You are a special gift from our lord. As to the videos, these short tips and guidance videos are so helpful in my musical journey. I really dig-in, transpose, work on locating the lick all over the fretboard and using dynamics & muting to really woodshed the ideas to expand my vocabulary....I feel blessed to support you via tips and your GoFundMe effort. God bless you my friend, see you around soon!

Dude, sounds like this when I was 15 or 16 made me feel like I could fly and made me want to learn how to make these sounds. I'm 61 now I guess I'm not as emotional as when younger but this kind of playing sure pulls up a feeling, love your stuff man, I just found you and I plan to dig in to your generosity ❤

Great tips, very nice playing. I strongly believe in simple, melodic licks played with passion, that's what makes great music. Tom Buckovic often says sing a melody and then play it, similar to the advice you gave here. Thanks for sharing.

Man!!! If you put things like the first tune on a record with a very soft touch of production, it'd be pure joy to listen to on a quiet afternoon

Whoa. He's on Truetone?! I just saw him on Keith's Short History of the Gibson L5 video at Five Watt World. Gonna have to check out his Truetone Lounge interview. I've watched David Grissoms about 15 times by now lol. And just saw it again yesterday 😁

I think it's useful to have other guitarists in mind when coming to these things. For Dorian I think of Santana. For major I think of B.B. King and The Allman Brothers Band e.g. songs like 'Soulshine'. And Hendrix of course.

Great video Kirk, thx! But how do you figure out the vocal melody?
@TwilightStorm
@TwilightStorm 2 года назад
Um. I'll try. Take a song you feel is easy. Take a short phrase of vocals. Now, either in your head, or out loud, sing the phrase, but don't pronounce the words. Find the sound/note of the word/syllables of the word being sung, on your instrument. Something like the nursery rhyme Mary Had A Little Lamb. Try to sing each syllable in your head and find the notes on the guitar. Do the same with your phrase. Keep it simple at first, it falls under ear training, and transcribing I think. Try to find the note your neighbor's lawn mower or weed whacker is growling in. The note the horn of a car honked in, play the bird singing in the tree, Play jingles from TV, etc. (Non intentional cheesy rhyme, sorry) I have no idea if that helps, or if it's confusing. Just sing the line like you didn't know the words, and what you're left with is the vocal melody. Knowing a bit of scales is helpful too.
