You’re one of the most solid guitar players I’ve heard in my 46 years. Pure respect for how much you’ve dedicated yourself to your instrument. Love your albums
If this posts twice, I apologize. Phone is being difficult.. This is so fucking cool! I don't wanna start thinking of what you're showing in the wrong context, like the whole major / minor Pentatonic thing. So is it safe to look at this as the mixolydian with a flat 5 or keep itas a minor 5 in the thought process? I feel like Scarface when I play this.... Minus all the blow. But still... Pretty badass.
They call it a line cliche and it’s one worth using. Oye Como Va and a million others use it. A personal favorite along with the little interchange from Manha de Carnaval.
the good ole tasty minor line cliche... also hear it a lot in Beatles & Stevie Wonder songs. First tunes that come to mind are the Beatles song "Cry Baby Cry" (in the verses) & "Golden Lady" (Stevie song, chorus sec). Sounds especially nice in Oye Como Va too. I haven't checked out Manha de Carnaval but I'm about to. Thanks for the heads up 👊 Edit: just looked up Manha de Carnaval and I actually knew the tune....when I was studying jazz that song is one of the standards we played, but it goes by the title, "Black Orpheus"...same exact song tho, never knew til now!
Thanks for sharing all of this with us, when I first listened to Buena Vista Social Club I was in awe of the musicians and the music. Ry Cooder did all of music a great service in bringing the Cubano music into the world (again). Thanks brother!
Thanks GT- amazing playing as usual, and your teaching chops have really come along nicely 👍(As someone who has paid for Artist works and True Fire platforms, not just soaking up from the you tubes, your teaching has noticeably progressed)
I love Cuba and its music. I am fortunate enough to play with a group of friends whenever I'm in Varadero or Matanzas. Beautiful Island. Beautiful people.
I was in Miami a few years ago i went to a Cuban restaurant the music culture and music was so amazing and the beautiful ladies Oh my. Thanks now i won’t be able to get it out of my head.
Dearest Guthrie, good to see you again! I’ve been a long time, loyal fan, just my preference are your moments of beauty for example when you played the Collings I-35 LC. These Afro-Cuban “clave rhythms” are also cool on guitar, (as in all instruments). Hope you’re enjoying life my friend!
Guthrie, We keep hearing your genius in all styles of music. This Latin rhythm suits you - like so many other styles you've mastered. I will be watching this channel! Many thanks!
I just love they way you play, GT! Afro-Cuban is cool. Speaking of Ry Cooder, I had a chance to see him for free in a church basement back around 1970, before he was so well known. I think he had one album out .. Into The Purple Valley, which is loaded with cool songs that I still play. Anyhow, me and my Jacksonville Navy music buddies thought we got to see this guy with the odd name. I sat on a folding chair right in front of him and was just mesmerized. I wanted to learn slide like he played, etc. Big influence. Jax Fla was musically vibrant back then. The best venue was the Comic Book Club which hosted lots of local up and comers .. Allmans, Skynrd, more. Same with Skynrd. There was a free concert in the city park, they were the band. Again, weird name, gotta go see. They were great, tight and well rehearsed, looked like they just stepped out of the swamps .. bib overalls with no shirts, etc. Their "equipment van" was a beat up old school bus with the windows knocked out and chicken wire instead. Those were sure great times!!!
I live in Miami. Glad you had a good time. We locals tend to stay away from South Beach in general from the PTSD over the years. Happy to hear you enjoyed it and kept it safe. 🤙🏽
Mr.Trapp, Where are you performing in New York? I would really enjoy to go to the performance and hear you play music. I just loved the way you played “You Know It Ain’t Right” with Kenny Vaughn! Roll up to New York Please 🙏! 😎👍
😊 Thanks for that man. You're my Savior tonight. I started jamming with these guys last week. The guy that sings the songs can only play guitar using open D tuning. Don't get me wrong, he's very good. And the fiddle player scared me He was so good. I was invited back. So I was Searching youtube looking for some good ideas in D and boom, a Guthrie Trapp video!!!. you sir are a true artist. Thank you so much.
Thanks, Guthrie, another fantastic lesson in not just guitar, but MUSIC! Can’t wait for your record with Uncle Larry, sure wish I could see you live sometime. I’ll keep hittin’ the tip jug in the meantime. Keep up the great work!
Merci beaucoup. I'm still learning the fretboard, but have geeked out on music theory when I started the piano. One critique I make of some guitarists is that they don't spend enough time learning theory. I appreciate that Guthrie talks notes and not tabs.
I love this lesson. You do great videos. Thank you! I listen to your channel regularly. But sadly, i dont comment regularly!! But you always get a thimbs up from me. And you always will!!
Great work Guthrie! Bitter end again. Good Luck and have fun. Glad you had a good time in Miami. Just goes to show you cannot believe what you here about places you have never been to. Many places are safe in America! Glad you mentioned Ry Cooder one of my favorites for sure.
5:00 I heard you play that and I immediately thought of the opening line of Michelle by the Beatles. Almost exactly the same notes! How did the Beatles come up with that? Was it a Cuban influence for them as well?
I feel you on the workouts/health programs. I've been doing the Six Pack Revolution, 75 days of no dairy, sugar, processed foods, red meat, alcohol or caffeine, plus core and HIIT workouts. It sucks, but I'm on day 60, and I'm down 15 kg. 75 days feels like long enough so that I've developed some habits that will hopefully keep me from backsliding. Keep it going, man, develop those habits!
The Beatles also used it(starting in Bm) in the bridge of "I'll Be Back" while singing the extended "I" in the lyric "I - - - - - - - thought that you would realize - that if I ran away...." A few people have already mentioned "Summer Rain" by Johnny Rivers, it's also used in a portion of "If" by Bread as well as "Time in a Bottle" by Jim Croce.
First thought was "Stairway to Heaven", but after you added the rhythm and bounced between the 7 and 6 over the minor-3rd it sounded like "Spill the Wine" by WAR
Hey GT! As soon as I heard you start playing, I knew a little bit of South Florida rubbed off on you while you were down here. I'm a rock-n-roller at heart but we still do parties with all latin music to keep the groove up.
Incredible playing, I just found "Uncle Larry" a few weeks ago, now you, so there is no need for any other players to get inspired from, now I also found that you and Tom have a CD coming out, I can't wait. Rock on
