One Of The Most Revolutionary Trios Of Our Time 

long time listener/ viewer, thank you guys! i noticed on the past couple episodes it sounds like your audio might be getting a bit overly de-essed. maybe its just me as an audio engineer finding it's mildly distracting, still amazing content though!

what's happening with the sound recently. sounds like there is some noise suppression thing happening, but it almost chokes the words

I saw Bill Charlap with Jon Faddis at William Paterson here in NJ back in early 2020. What a unique combination, to say the least. But the genius of the both of them. Mind-blowing stuff. Both men quite humble and very intelligent. And Jon was actually quite funny. When I thought he was going to say something deep to my young son, he actually said "Hey Jordan, who's the prettiest girl in your class?" 🤣

So glad to see y'all do a whole episode on Bill Charlap. He's been one of my favorite pianists lately. Makes great records.

Amazing guys, thank you! I remember seeing Bill here in Toronto, 2004 as I recall. He is an amazing raconteur and I still relate some of the epic stories that he told. Musicians seem to collect these crazy happenings. Humour is the coin of our realm - we certainly don't do it for the money. I think that humour comes out in his playing as a kind of laissez-faire, a beautifully controlled freedom. Real mastery.

Saw Bill when he had a short residency with the Maestro, Ron Carter, in New York a few years back. It wasn't the trio, but I have seen the trio as well, many years earlier. Always such a treat.

Dang, thats the level of playing that has moved from the stink face to the rare and highest level of the frozen face.

Love the show! You guys should talk about David Hazeltine, pretty similar to Charlap. Basically on the other side of the coin. NPR had a good article comparing the 2 but it was published quite a while ago.

I owe the You'll Hear It folks an apology. I checked out Bill Charlap over the past couple of days at the Rochester International Jazz festival, and thought he was absolutely on fire (solo, and trio). The live performances were much more intense than what I have seen of his work on youtube, as highly skilled as that is. I thought to myself "I wonder why Open Studio never talks about this guy--he's great!" And here I am.

E.S.T. by far. I wonder whether Peter and Adam actually know them since it was European trio, but it was revolutionary and unique. Check out their "Live in Hamburg" album, it is mindblowing.

Yes, Bill Charlap--Peter Washington--Kenny Washington. That's the modern NYC Rhythm section, right there for those in the know! I went to see Johnny Griffin with the TRIO before I left NYC and Kenny Washington saw me in the front row, pointed, and said, "who's this JAMF in the front row? You know what JAMF stands for? Jive A$$ Mother F%^KER." Then he laughed and we had a quick back and forth. I will always remember that moment and brag about it with pride. There is no other drummer out in NYC quite like Kenny Washington, and there is no other trio like the NYC Rhythm Section. Sorry, Peter--but I side with Adam here--end stop. No one else plays with that hook up like the NYC Rhythm Section--that's why EVERYONE that comes to NYC wants to play with them. Mr. Space Man, OUT. Oh yeah, when y'all gonna do my request for Hip Hop and BAM? Do I gotta leave another voicemail ;)

Khruangbin, motherfucker. They sound like all the best jazz rock from the past including Weather Report. Also...tricot (Yvette Young's band). She's on the Jeff Beck level, no lie. I can only imagine what depth she will achieve in her 90's. Limitless. Charlap is just an interpreter. He sounds the same no matter what. Renee's trios in the 1990's was badass. I saw her many times and it was a joy and her husband was always there no matter what. I love Renee even now. I hope Renee doesn't think she's lower than Charlap. That would be a travesty. Frankly...I don't get it. Paul Motian trio with Frissell and Lovano, man. I saw 'em a few times when I lived in Jersey back in the day. Let's just say I never forgot the experience and they weren't playing shit. I actually saw Lovano fucking wake up from his solo, he was so out of it and into it. I saw his eyes, man. He was almost embarrassed he went so deep, like he was trying to work something out in his past. RIP Motian. He was the best. Brad Mehldau with the boys from San Mateo (Grenadier and Ballard are cats I played with back in the day) is great. Brad's the shit, man. He was the whole point of the Joshua Redman group back then. Finally ANYTHING Corey Henry in small format is great. His worship work brings me to tears. True man of God that I can't explain. He's a treasure. But Charlap....I'm a pianist and I ain't see shit. I wish Hyman was still alive. Charlap trying to be like him, you know, but without the stride and soundtracks. Finally...any trio with Monty Alexander. I still learn shit listening to him even after 50 years discovering him. Maybe you guys dig Charlap because he's basically a chord guy and you guys dig chords. I don't know. ZZzzzz...
