I was asked in the comments of a previous video to show the jump he does, and it seemed worth going over the whole interaction. There's apparently been quite a bit of confusion surrounding it, so hopefully this does a good job of giving a practical demonstration of what exactly is going on. As with throw escapes, I've always thought it was a little weird how some players believe the ledge grab event was somehow unintended. It has unique animations and a prerequisite for triggering, and yet I've still seen some people refer to it as a bug. The rumor that throw escapes were a bug came from a prominent member of the souls community mistakenly claiming that, so I have to imagine similar misinformation may have been erroneously circulated by some other big name people trusted. Something to consider, I suppose, is that many players probably only played the game a single time. When someone told them after the fact, they probably wouldn't recall the exact details of the fight, and so the notion that it was a pathing error or some other glitch wouldn't seem immediately outlandish. There are also likely some number of players who fought and killed Ceaseless directly, never witnessing the ledge grab event firsthand at all, who were told there was an "easy way" later on and simply accepted that it was a bug because they didn't have any reason to think otherwise.
I had a friend who thought the egg parasite was a bug, this was way back in 2013 too, idk why tho, i think its because dark souls doesnt explain shit to you, and when weird stuff like that starts to happen its mostly accidental like " i was running away from this fire boss and now he got stuck and fell to his death, game is broken"
Some of it may be less misinformation and more misunderstanding. There are certain types out there who define Dark Souls so much by its supposed "hardcore" difficulty that anything that makes the game easy is deemed "wrong".
While I never thought of it as a bug myself, the fight using this method is so underwhelming and pitiful for such a big enemy that I can easily see myself thinking "That's it? There had do be more to that, right? Probably a bug or sth". You'd imagine that once he grabs on to the ledge, he'd at least use his back appendages to keep you away from his arm or something, but no: he just hangs there like an idiot and doesn't do anything. It's also hard to tell that he's falling down a large cliff, so it might seem like he just falls over and dies instead of backing off as if you destroyed his heart hidden in the arm.
I've never stuck around to see the arm-ripping animation (gotta run for that gate!), and the views from other angles (particularly during the jump and cliff-hang) were interesting! You can see so little of his model in a normal playthrough. Thanks for this one!
I'm not sure if my memory is betraying me or not, but I seem to recall that he can sometimes just miss the ledge and fall off the cliff which skips the event entirely. That might be why people think it's more of a bug.

Not only did he do it to himself on purpose, but he's a war god, he killed his way to the top and then ruled over the world as a god with a cannibalistic executioner at his side. Putting him down is tragic in a way, but it wouldn't be at all if we got to him in his prime. It's nothing he wouldn't have done

Another tragic part of his story: the centipede demon arena is quite close to where CD is standing, and if you look closely you notice hes missing one of his arms. The centipede holds the ring that protects you against lava damage, and in the description it says it was given to CD by his sisters, to protect him from the pain the lava caused. What happened is that his arm fell off and mutated on its own, creating a centipede demon, and leaving the poor guy without his protection ring, causing him infinite pain.
He's willing to throw himself off a cliff just to get his dead sister's belongings back to her grave... In a constant state of pure agony, that was what tipped him over the edge (literally). Such a sad boss. Up there with pinwheel.
@@justinsimanjuntak2460 What happened was that she was unaccounted for by her family and they thought her dead, after sometime she just never went back because she had essentially abandoned her family and didn't have the will to face her family after that. This is just a summary though. Edit: Fixed a typo.
I never noticed that his arm was fused to his chest since the camera is relatively close to the player and makes it hard to see bigger enemies. And I wish they waited longer to have him fade away and drain his health bar using the cliff kill. It would make it look like it was actually the fall taking him out and not 2 slaps on the hand.

But fool that he is, he readily dropped it, and from that spot, a terrible centipede demon was born." I think the demon took over the missing arm and became Centipede Demon

Something that people might not know about the skip: It is possible to try it again if you fail it. If you die during the fight, his arm will reset and re-fuse with his body, which causes most people to think that you have to fight him "fair" after that. But if you run to his sister's corpse, this causes him to rip his arm out again, and you can attempt the skip again.
Ceaseless discharge's name in Japanese is "Tadare Tsudzukeru Mono (爛れ続けるもの)", which means "the thing that keeps on being sore" or "the continually inflamed one" depending on the translation.
Meanwhile, the German translation found "Ceaseless Discharge" too weird a name for a creature, so they called him "Lavastrom-Dämon" "Lava flow demon". Also, "Bed of Chaos" is "Chaoswesen von Izalith" (Chaos creature of Izalith).
@@dfsdhjk4780 In this case, 痛み here means sore. So it's the medical term of inflame. And from what I could find, another word for 'sore' in Japanese is 痛い(Itai) which can also be translated as 'exceeding' where I guess he got ceaseless from.

I always took the cliff fall as the canonical way he dies. You loot a corpse, discharge gets angry, you run away from the impending doom, reach a dead-end, await doom. Realise your doom is stuck and unable to fight back then become the doom of your doom.

Wish you spent a bit more time looking at his body afterwords, it almost looks like his arm was INSIDE his torso earlier, not just fused to it. There's that giant gaping hole with the psuedo rib-cage around it, gives off the feeling that he's not just a person that was mutated, but a malformed fetus that's just been blown up 100x in size and set on fire. Really was their baby brother.
Sif, Queelag, Ceaseless, Artorias, and to an extent, Manus, all share the “Ignore how it’s tragic and kind of cruel” sentiment when it comes to boss fights. I'd kinda feel the same about Bed of Chaos if she wasn't so infuriating to deal with, that by the end I'm always like FUCK YOU, YOU ARE DEAD! HAHA!".
@@haunt97 Manus was exhumed by humans egged on by a primeval serpent to consume the abundant humanity Manus's corpse had. When they dug him up, he went crazy and started killing everyone and spreading abyss.
All of those are tragic, but none of them cruel. For most of the bosses, killing them might be the opposite of cruel. They would probably thank you for putting them out of their misery if they still had two brain cells to rub together.
I kinda wish his body didn't disappear. Seeing as he's right above centipedes boss area when he jumps, it'd be cool to see his corpse in the arena when fighting centipede. Of course, Izalith was rushed so we'll never know what was planned. So much potential in that area imo, if only I could mod/understood code. Ha ha ha.

There's also the fact that his "dead" sister is Quelana, the pyromancy master who appears in Blighttown when you or a phantom has a +10 pyromancy flame. All he has left is the solace of knowing he's with his sister, and it's not even her.
One would have to assume that is why she sits outside. It’s as close to her poor, tortured family as she can ever get, and seeing her again would only cause them more pain. She knows what you’re doing. She knows you’re going to kill them all, but it’s the only thing left to be done to cease their suffering.
Well let’s not forget that Souls games idea of life, death, and rebirth, are all intertwined and aren’t necessarily so black and white. Quelana very well could be dead in Ceaseless Discharge’s version of the world he lives. However that’s just his world. Quelana could have her own world where she lived and became more, which is what we could be seeing in blighttown. The Souls Universe is so complex and strange.
Izalith in general is such a tragedy, one of the saddest places in all of Dark Souls. It's a shame it's so unfinished, from the lore and tales of the Witch and her family , to the general design (mega-bloom notwithstanding) it's my favourite place in Dark Souls
The one thing I'll never understand is how I beat him legitimately on my first ever playthrough, but after abusing the cheese strat so many times, I struggle to fight him normally now.
i managed to do that fight once. it was still pretty cheezy, baiting the boss to attack me down a hallway, and then ducking round the corner each time.

Just another reminder that the arm that fused to his chest was his entire left arm, that he put there to stop that giant ass hole, said hole coming from his other arm falling off and becoming the centipede demon still holding onto his lava walking ring, or at least that is how Interpret that whole scenario.
The ring *itself* became the Centipede Demon, not his arm. Centi could have ripped the arm off after the fact, but we're told in no uncertain terms the ring itself became the demon.

@@Evnyofdeath I think that is debatable. The way it is written in english, the demon spawned where the ring dropped, not really that the centipede is the ring. Because after all, it drops when one of the heads is cut, not when you kill it. The centipede demon itself is an one of a kind demon that has one huge "arm" which is coincidentally the same arm that Ceaseless lost, both of them do share similar designs quite a bit, more than most demons do. Not only that but the centipede demon with multiple heads could stand to be analogous to a hand, making it so that cutting the head is like cutting the finger with the ring. We have no idea of how Ceaseless lost his arm, or the ring for that matter. For all we know, centipede birthed out of his arm and took it, ring and all; which would actually be appropriate, given how two of the Izalith Witches became half fused with spiders, and the Queen herself is a bug now. This would make all transformed by the curse be somehow related to bugs.
I didnt know that that attack at the beginning was his arm defusing from his body. I'm still amazed at how I'm still learning things about this game and I've played for hours since the year it came out. Like how is that possible, not even games that have seasons have such a dense array of detail.
I've always assumed this was just a puzzle boss and the cliff fall kill was the intended method. I mean the "puzzle" is pretty obvious, but so is "whack Wolnir's massive bangles to win" in DS3.
It’s interesting how Miyazaki has the whole “this thing should have some dignity” philosophy when it came to the undead dragons, but then Ceaseless is practically screaming “I don’t want to be alive anymore.”

That attack has actually killed me more times than i want to mention, and i never knew it was a prerequisite for the ledge grab. I have never in my life fought Ceaseless Discharge. I don't understand how people say him dying from the run back to the gate is a glitch or unintended. A unique animation plays. It's supposed to be a bad-feeling boss fight that you can cancel out of. The way the Ceaseless cheeses of locking his tentacles between rocks and chipping away at his health have somehow spread baffles me. It's the literal wrong way to fight the boss. It's like complaining about fighting the Storm King without the proper sword.
Honestly I fought Ceaseless discharge in my first run with the black knight great sword (then ultra greatsword in NG+) and basically first tried it both times because he NEVER did anything else than the smash attack on the ground, it's on my magic run that I tried to kill it with the ledge and ended up discovering his other attacks and went : "no, no thank you" and simply did the fight without the ledge grab XD
i actually knew of the cheese where you get just far enough away that he hits you with his tentacle arm first, i just found out about the ledge grab a few days ago.
I had no idea you were supposed to do this. I always just hang by the clothes, dodge his finger slam, hit it once or twice until he dies. He doesn't take that little damage, I don't think. He isn't crazy tanky like Yhorm where it's obvious you're supposed to do something else. Although I did always think it was odd that he was able to be killed by having his finger whacked by a sword a few times.
My first playthrough I had no idea about the ledge, I just fought him normally and he never used his bullshit fire attack (which would instakill me because I had no armor, shield, or health investment). He only used the slam and than I killed him. I actually thought the boss was incredibly pathetic since the swing was so damn slow. Subsequent playthroughs where he actually used his fire made me reconsider that. I would honestly call it bad design. The player doesn't really have any reason to run back to the start, and if they die the first time there's no way in hell they're going to think to run all the way back to the grave and run all the way back to the gate. They'll just die repeatedly to fire spam and give up.
As a story, the special way to kill Ceaseless sounds similar to the part of The Odyssey where they bully the cyclops into letting them escape. Instead of fighting head-to-head with a truly titanic creature, you enrage it by profaning the grave of its family, then lure it into a trap. It’s vicious, but I think it fits that epic narrative the first Dark Souls really seemed to embody. The Chosen Undead has a lot in common with Greek heroes - more important than purely admirable, looking at the list of their deeds.
I remember the first time I actually beat him by fighting, I thought HE dropped the chaos ember sitting in the lava. Turns out it was just there from the start. I was very disappointed. What a missed opportunity to make the player feel extra rewarded for actually fighting this boss and succeeding.
WOW! I never noticed how fucking DEEP is that cliff! I always thought Ceaseless shouldn't have died to a fall of all things considering how absolutely titanic he is, but after seeing how tall that cliff falls, I can see why he would die to that. Ceaseless is already *ridiculously* tall and that entire fall to the bottom is like FIVE or SIX times his own height! _Poor lad, no wonder he dies to that._ :(

Since most of centipede demon’s fight is in lava it would’ve been metal af to actually do the fight against Centipede on top of the corpse of ceaseless

it looks like his hand is completely gone, and his wrist was completely fused to the inside of his body, inside a small ribcage on the right side of his chest (his right). when he rips it out, we see that the elbow is completely free immediately, then he pulls it out of the ribcage, leaving a deep crater where it was, and leading to the hand being a rounded club. obviously, lava leaks from his insides after he rips it out. very uncomfortable to watch.
The pit he fall in is quite similar to where you fight Centipede Demon, and it is acctually locate right under where Ceaseless Discharge stand too. The nightmare is that if he survive the fall, the Centipede could probadly finish his life, but I think that not happen. Hopefully.
As much as it's sad to kill him this way, thinking about and you realize that this might be the quickest way to end his suffering, putting him out of his misery instantaneously, instead of fighting him the right way, that is slowly killing him, this shows that everyone can have a bit of empathy, even if you are hollow inside
It’s really sad Lost Izalerth was so rushed. It easily could’ve been one of the best locations in the entire series. Im praying In Elden Ring we get a true underground lava cavern/city that’s home to demons.
I love watching these videos and hearing the bgm and going "oh another Zelda song!" I heard the knocking beat in the first 3 seconds and knew immediately. Perfect music for this boss considering that dungeon and its boss.
this fight literally taught me how to dodge. i was full tank stone armor before i finally learned how to dodge during this fight. some time around 3 am and i fought and fought until i finally beat him. this guy and the flamelurker are one of few boss fights to spike my heartrate when i beat them.
I appreciate you going through the full sequence, after all this time, not even I knew about him following and jumping after you. I had always just taken the clothes and just fought him in that same area.
The fates of the Chaos family is some of the most brutally, over the top sad and painful character stories I've ever seen anywhere. This sort of thing defines dark fantasy imo, taking the whimsical imagination of fantasy and twisting it into the most agonizing portrayals of suffering. Ceaseless is an innocent, absent minded boy who is condemned to countless years of constant pain and loneliness whose only solace in his thousands of years of torment is watching over the grave of his dead sister. The thing that makes it so tragic is the little sprinkles in the lore that he was the beloved little baby brother of his seven older sisters, who made him his magic ring themselves. That little tiny piece of backstory is what makes his fate so incredibly sad, as well as the rest of this family, but his is the most gut wrenching. Like you can't help but imagine him as your dopey little kid brother that you just want to pat on the head and protect, but instead he gets eternal damnation in a fate worse than death.

Having played all the Souls games I can tell you put a lot of effort into your videos, I am starting to see some momentum building up in your views! On my first ever playthrough of Dark Souls, I fought this lad honestly and I genuinely had a very fun time doing so. I never knew about the ledge mechanic and never heard anybody complaining about him back when, so I went in to it just as any other boss and had a blast. Mind you, this was likely in part to not knowing dodging properly and running a full strength build of heavy armour, greatsword, and greatshield; so he hurt, but never killed me. He was the only fight where I ever saw the block animation where you roll backwards after a hit too, so I always respected him for that.
Holy hell I didnt know he rips his arm out, thats gruesome ... still remember how I fought him in normal way when I started playing DS1, like pffft whos ornstein and smough, this dude here is the hardest boss ... and later when I saw this, I assumed its some kind of exploit or glitch (since I never watched the whole animation) and still refused to use it
I played this game countless times and this is literally the first time I'm seeing this. This boss fight now makes sense, you're supposed to run from it, always thought it was way too punishing, even for DS standards.
Hearing him described as challenging makes it feel kinda awkward that I had no troubles with him on my very first playthrough. Then again, I was using Black Iron armor, which should be pretty good against him.
Honestly, Ceaseless is either piss easy or a massive pain in the ass. My first playthrough was easy as well. Unlike you though, I didn't have the Black Iron armor, I wasn't using a shield, armor, and I didn't invest in health at all. Killed him first try with absolutely no difficulties because he never used his lava attack that would have definitely one shot me. Subsequent playthroughs he HAS used his lava attack, and I have died against him because there's absolutely nothing you can do if he decides to use it.
I remember a scene from a movie I saw years ago where the characters discussed words that should never be put back to back due to bad mental imagery. I believe “Ceaseless Discharge” qualifies. Seriously though he is the epitome of a DS character(memorable look and depressingly sad backstory).
i always thought he just opened on a weird little splashing attack that he never uses again. makes sense that he couldnt pull himself up, he'd never used the arm before (or at least for a long time?)
Plus, he's massive and hanging on with one hand. At the size he's reached it would be impressive for him to hold on to ledges at all, even if he had both hands. Pulling himself up with one would be incredible.
Ya kno, I've played ds1 tons of times, beaten this boss tons of times, and knew almost all of these things (clicked just because I like your videos) And until now I never knew his arms was stuck in his chest. I always thought that ripping animation was just him throwing Lava. Suppose you learn something new every day, especially with nice chanels like this. Thank you : )
I dont know if that fits with the level design but imagine that, if you do knock him down and he falls to his death, that you were able to find him, in the great magma or lava area with the torso dragons everywhere, as a corpse with some hidden item.
thats insane, about 4 years ago during my second playthrough of this game i posted a video on my snapchat story walking through this exact area with the goron mines theme. it fits perfectly
@@laundrybasketgamers yes, they inflict toxicity, end up costing a lot of weapon durability and their drops disappear very quickly but with enough Discovery they are a good substitute for the humanity sprites in the Depths of the Abyss (if you don't mind crushing lots of already dead children)
Imagine if when you knocked him off the cliff, he only proceeded to land below and become more mutated. The fall wasn't that large, and what you once thought was an easy boss skip now comes back to bite you in the form of an even more wicked demon. Perhaps even a duo boss battle with Centipede Demon and the Mutated Ceaseless Discharge.
I never knew he jumped over a gap. I always thought it was lava floor under him at all times, and that when you whack his hand enough, he just kinda... falls over onto the lava he's already standing on... and dies from that. This makes more sense.
With him being as big as he is, it would have been epic if his fight was like Tower Knight. Hit his ankles to weaken him making him fall down to do damage to his head/eyes etc.
Wow. I was not aware that this was a possibility. Than again I both played and platinumed the game on PS3 before I even had a smart phone and our computer was too slow for anything so I never researched anything. Thank you for showing it, I will try it out on the remastered version.
