In this video I go over how my 1981 McLane has held up this season with its new engine and roller. I also give some opinions for anyone thinking about buying a new McLane or considering the used market, what to look for, and cost considerations. I break down how much mine cost with the updates, and what are large cost items to look for when searching for your used McLane. Thanks for watching!

I have a 200 sq ft Bermuda Lawn and a 70 year old Ca. Trimmer, I have not used the lawn mower yet, it just sits outside and rust. I like the idea of people brining these lawn mowers back to life.

I went with outside the box option and heavily modded my fiskars staysharp max reel mower into a self-propelled, remote controlled, zero turning, auto backlapping, decently inclined lawn climbing, grass catching, battery powered and etc reel mower 😁

My experience w/ the old briggs L heads is you can get the starting up first pull: first off if it has points install an electronic ignition. Points are a pain in the butt and I've never had good luck with them. If the tank is rusty a good evaporust or vinegar treatment will clean it and as long as the reservoir is good the tank is good. Replace all the gaskets-the fuel diaphragm is essential but also the carb to tank gasket and the carb to motor gasket, if that has leaks and it will from being old/dry/brittle the motor won't run right, adjust the valves and clean the carbon off the engine. For the head I throw it in my ultrasonic and it comes out like new. I've done this about 3-4 times w/ 60's L head briggs I've gotten for free or next to free. Everyone ran perfect afterwords and when I started they were a disaster. I sold all of them as I didn't need them but hated to see them turn into scrap. Also for the electronic ignition, I've both both the exact one, which is expensive at around $40 and had no issues w/ a used 550 series coil. My understanding is as long as the coil was designed for the side flywheel it will be ok.

I have an old King of Lawn edger with a B&S 2 HP engine, I did the electronic ignition mod, I put fresh gas in it, one pull it started, it sat for 16 years of my ownership and my brother had it before me and he never used it as well. My brand new Honda plastic deck lawnmower takes 3 pulls to start it.

Great video. A neighbor has a California Trimmer he also bought used. Still runs after 18 years. I started looking and just picked one up for $75 off markeplace (doesn’t run). Engine is from 2006 but was completely seized. No idea the age of the mower but it’s pretty rusty and needs serious TLC. I bought a replacement handle assembly with dead-man’s clutch off e-bay for $140. I’m trying to decide whether to just replace the engine or resurrect the existing one. Im not a mechanic but it seems the block, shaft and piston are all fine. A new B&S engine runs about $350. I think i can replace the parts i need for about $100. Looking forward to cleaning this unit up and putting it into action. Hoping its not a total money pit, but lots of used parts out there to bring it back to life!

You’ve also got the harbor freight predator motor as an option. It will probably be a slight money pit, mine sure was, but it’s worth it! I had to sell off my McLane, which only the engine and roller were the good parts left after a few seasons. To get an updated bedknife, I had to swap a reel and grass deflector which would’ve been more than everything I’ve done so far. Long story, I’m shopping for another one. Good luck with yours and thanks for sharing!

Bought my used 2003 McLane 20" 7 blade reel mower for $200. It had several nicks on the reel but nothing major. I've had it sharpened twice and it cuts better every time. I did a partial tear down of the engine, de-carbonized the combustion chamber, and cleaned the carb. It now starts with one pull. Now just gonna repaint some of the parts to make it look top notch.

@@ReelGreenLawn You're welcome. McLanes are pretty plentiful here in So Cal. You can routinely find them on Offer Up in the $100 to $300 range for a nice one that might need just a little work. It also helps that they were manufactured here in Paramount CA for many decades.

Briggs & Stratton makes great engines. In the 1980s Honda started making engines that would start with just a couple pulls on the rope. That was a huge selling point for small engines. But Briggs & Stratton engines have been used to power all sorts equipment probably since the 1930s or before. They were simple but kind of heavy for their size. Small engines tend temperamental if you don’t run them once in a while. It’s amazing what happens by running fresh fuel through them will do.
@ReelGreenLawn
@ReelGreenLawn 2 года назад
Funny thing was while I was waiting on my new Briggs to come in, I was running that old engine way more than the previous owner. Each time it would run better and better. The surging went away, and it purred by the time the new one showed up. Felt a little guilty pulling it but the guy I sold it to put it on a mini bike… so it’s still alive somewhere.

What do you think about the grooved roller? Weighing whether I want to pay extra for grooved
@ReelGreenLawn
@ReelGreenLawn 3 года назад
I like the grooved roller. I feel like my cut got a lot better on one pass than before, however that’s comparing it to having no roller at all. I haven’t used one with a smooth roller, but my friend uses a smooth roller on his on Zoysia and has no complaints either. For my Bermuda type (common) I don’t know if I would be able to tell a difference between a smooth or a grooved.

Hi.. cool video. I’ve owned mine for about 17 yrs. i have a question does the front roller make a difference ,what do you notice?
@ReelGreenLawn
@ReelGreenLawn 3 года назад
Thank you for watching. I only had the original wheels on the front for a few weeks before I made the swap, but thinking back I would say the most noticeable difference was a hard definition stripe compared to no roller. I was impressed with that. Also, my lawn isn’t very level, and it actually does help with not scalping my high spots. I can’t really say if it makes a difference with the quality of cut, but I would need to reinstall the front wheels to test, mainly because I know how to properly set it up to get the best cut now, than I did in the first few weeks of ownership. I’ll look out for a front wheel assembly and if it’s cheap enough, I’ll do a test because I’d like to know if it cuts better. Hopefully some of that answer helps!

I found a mclane for $425 with a new predator 212cc engine swap. Would that be a good buy for the price? I’m move only seen these mowers with the Briggs engine
@ReelGreenLawn
@ReelGreenLawn 3 года назад
In my area (DFW) that could be a good price. So what I would do, is subtract $125 off the price (assuming the engine is all good), and see if the rest of the mower is worth $300 to you. The mindset being you may be able to find one that’s really cheap and do an engine swap yourself. But that would also hinge what’s available in your area, and what amount of work you want to do on one. Your other expensive parts would be the reel and bedknife. I have another video on how to tell if those are in good shape. For the quick and easy, do they mow their current lawn with it and can they it be started up and operated at its current location? If you’re new to how these work like I was when I bought mine, I just had the guy give me a run down on how to work it and went from there. Hope that helps

I ordered the roller from ReelRollers.com… they only have 20” and 25” options for grooved and smooth rollers. My McLane is a 20” reel and the roller from them fit perfectly.

@ReelGreenLawn
@ReelGreenLawn 2 года назад
Thanks for the comment… and I rewatched the video for price I said. I misspoke and said $100 instead of $150. I pulled up my invoice from McLane and it was $149.73 all together for the whole grass catcher assembly, tax, and shipping.

Wish this video existed before started the process of buying my first McLane! Solid advice and basically have the same thought process. ;) Did you consider the Harbor Freight engines?
@ReelGreenLawn
@ReelGreenLawn 3 года назад
I did consider the Predator engines from HF, and I think they would be the best option for a true budget build. I chose the B&S engine solely because it had good reviews, and someone had commented that they had put that engine on their McLane with good results.

Hey man, do you have any experience removing the rear axle?
@ReelGreenLawn
@ReelGreenLawn 3 года назад
I sure haven’t. I know “How to with Doc” just did a rear drive wheel replacement, and from that view it looks like that would be the best way to approach it. In the video, once he removes the rear drive wheels, I can see that section really well, so maybe there’s a way to remove the axle with that rear drive out of the way. This is all just a guess, but I’ll see if there’s anymore information out there about this, and let you know.
