Thats seeming like a bit of a stretch, 2step cuts ignition to let the tune over fuel its not adding more fuel. An engine aint going to hydrolock on that little of fuel unless an injector was stuck wide open. A hard backfire will do it, engine turns over the timing hits the fuel on a piston coming up & tries to force it down. That would absolutely do it. 2step with a rough tune will cause black smoke & be fine, bad tune + bad assy.= ill timed explosion knocked back to 2nd grade.
@TheQuestionableGarage
@TheQuestionableGarage Год назад
The first theory was a incorrect timing misfire, but the fuel smoke is what made it more likely a hydrolock. Incorrect settings can do lots of crazy things. That result came from a pool of some of the tuners of the fastest cars that are reliable and run a whole season without blowing hp

I locked1, blew1, an fueled 1 with a bad SEP1500 for months & it stopped it but it took fuel coming from the exhaust, i never did backfire 1 as bad as ya"alls did & few people have. It takes alot of fuel to lock1 & yours aint hit'n that amount on a 2step pop then shuts off, if so why didn't you mention the very excessive amounts of fuel not just alil here & there I don't no everything but what I do know i aint keeping to myself.

I don't know man... it takes a LOT of fluid to hydrolock a cylinder. Unless you're running billet atomizer injectors on alcohol, I don't believe one of your injectors would have the capacity to hydrolock a cylinder while the motor was running. If it was stuck open and filled a hole while the car was off, sure, but not while running... Also, if that was the case and it really flattened that bearing right then and there, it would be done. It would never run right again, no warm up, no burnout, nothing. You'd have almost no oil pressure from that moment going forward.

Dang man, I've been breaking my rear end to turbo my 2004 Acura TL on my own after fabricating everything to fit and it runs, makes boost, and pulls decently, but it needs a tune and it also needs some work because I keep fighting random exhaust leaks and its driving me nuts. I'm not trying to make crazy power, just some extra pull, so 5-8 psi is plenty. It has all of the supporting mods, but I can't win with these random exhaust leaks. I even had the rear flange milled perfectly flat and it's STILL leaking from the rear (even with a new gasket coated in copper RTV, and my engine has the exhaust manifolds cast into the heads, so it's just a 4 bolt flange outlet). I am absolutely not a professional fabricator, but if you could see what I built out of my amateur garage with nothing more than stainless pipe and a Lincoln MIG welder, you'd be surprised.

Newbi here. Why cant you just put new bearings in and be done? Is the shaft and block so much out of whack? What would happen to the engine?
@TheQuestionableGarage
@TheQuestionableGarage Год назад
The rod has a lot of heat in it and turned blue, which affects metal strength, also the crank would need to be turned to make it perfectly round again, which would require a unique bearing size(which is an option but not worth it for a factory crank)

Under those circumstances: What happens to the piston and piston bolt bearing? they have to carry the same load. Or is my thinking wrong?
@TheQuestionableGarage
@TheQuestionableGarage Год назад
The piston will take the load, but the rod bolts don’t fully come into play. Rod bolts come into play mostly while the rod is changing direction, but we help them by having the ignition event start to help push the rod back down. It’s hard to explain so I’ll try to remember to make a visual explanation next engine assembly!
@Jet2416-Reloading
@Jet2416-Reloading Год назад
There "may" have been some oil starvation involved with the bearing damage but I think it would have been secondary to the one main problem; that bearing did NOT have the correct clearance and overheated. Either that one bearing was thicker than all the rest, the rod or rod journal was not the same as the rest or the rod journal is out of round. If this wasn't true you would be seeing the same damage to more than one bearing.
@TheQuestionableGarage
@TheQuestionableGarage Год назад
The tolerances were all confirmed on assembly, measured and known to be correct. There is a impact mark on the crank, different from a spun bearing. Again I chased the answer a good bit and assumed it was assembly error but double checking it was all correct and clear.

Trying to really express the importance of patience, observation, critically analyzing the findings from that observation, and being able to humble yourself down to asking around the people you trust with experience to help when you're not sure are lessons that everyone needs to hear that applies to pretty much everything in life. The tangents while exploring the situation kind of remind of Adrian Black when he's going through old computers/electronics. Both of you are taking the audience along for the ride showing your thought process along the way and aren't just willing to jump in with corrections but are happy to do so to help everyone learn and improve. I remember talking to some people in the BMW/Euro community back when I got my E36's before I decided to engine swap them. Those people were some of the most aggressive closed off people I had ever talked to at the time when it came to the electronic side of the equation. I heard over and over basically "we're not telling you how to do this because you'll take our work". On the flip side when I first moved to Toyota for most of my engines in projects (mostly 2AZ I4, 1GR V6, and 1UZ V8) I had friends in Japan that were jumping at helping out with everything from start to finish while I was there for other work and vacation and long after. To be fair I never have had issues with Merc Diesel people nor anyone when I worked with 20v 1.8t or TDI VW stuff...maybe it was just the BMW people?

I’ve tried to make how to videos on repairs with my old supercharged m3 and my current hellcat. It takes so long to switch camera angles, Start, stop, ect that I always just stop filming and finish the job. It more than doubles the time of my jobs. Maybe soon I’ll get a legit camera and a tri-pod. I really respect what you do sir. Edit: Cleetus actually just posted a video on his channel, rebuilding Leroy. He mentioned that most of Leroy’s rods were bent, but you could only visually tell on 1 of them. The rest were bent, but it’s only discovered if you measure the rod. His guy Sam was the one that measured the rods and found them out of spec. It’s awesome being able to learn this technical advice from Guys like you.

I know no one likes us safety guys harassing them, but at least one of those straps needs to have been thrown away and replaced yesterday! Check 10:50, and you can see that the strap that is supporting the back of the block is severely worn. Please, please throw that thing out, Jared, we do not want to see you drop a block and get severely injured. Here is the part that no one wants to hear. You should ALWAYS inspect nylon straps for damaged or frayed threads BEFORE use and immediately discard them if there are ANY signs of wear or damage. If the straps are discolored from grime and/or oil and grease it is also advisable to replace them as well, since there is a well placed concern that it can enhance degradation of the nylon fibers. Not tryin' to bust a guy's chops, just concerned for a fellur's safety.

Great channel. I've gone through what you are a dozen times if not more. I'd suggest running a healthy factory untouched GEN4 small vore engine. "JY SBE". Get all your bugs worked out and build a motor on the side. My JY motors ran BETTER than anything I've had put together by a machine shop. More reliable and more than durable. Enough to easily meet an 8.50 cage cert. 4.8/5.3... doesn't matter. Last setup was a $400 4.8 and it lasted 3 years in the 8.70 range with a cam and untouched OEM heads. "building" a motor is overrated if you aren't looking to go much quicker than 8.50's. Guy's are going 7's on untouched OEM 4.8 bottom ends. I've NEVER seen a hyro lock do what you are suggesting. There's not enough time for the cyl to fill and lock. Really dont' think that was the issue. May go back to the log and look at oil pressure during the launch. Really looks like oil starvation to me.

Looks like clearences were too tight on #1 just my opinion.

It comes out that way, but they all measured the same during assembly, and that doesn’t explain the clear bearing impact, vs a fully rolled bearing. I’d see some damage on other journals if it was a clearance issue. I do appreciate the input! With as many eyes are able to check my work someone may catch something I miss!

Jared, if you get interrupted by other mechanics while you are working make yourself a placeholder like Vehcor. He uses a little strip of masking tape with a smiley face and calls it Mr. Spotty. If you get distracted or interrupted, just put Mr. Spotty in the area where you need to start back. As you get older this is even more important.
