One-Way Genie - Part 2 (Repairs)

The customer requested that I repair the Genie as quickly and efficiently as possible, without breaking the bank.
Can we easily modify the broken controller board and make this thing usable again without compromising on safety?
Enjoy!
Ivan

If it was a "new" or fairly new machine, I could see reason for concern with bypassing the joystick and board. However, on a machine that's over 15 years old and has been seriously used, it wouldn't be the first machine that I've ever used that was bypassed to make it work to save the massive expense of a new board. The phrase of making a silk purse from a sow's ear comes to mind - you work with what you have to find a solution, and I think you did excellent, Ivan.

You have confidence in ur repairs and that’s what matters. Customer understands that u saved him thousands and u performed and understand ur repairs to the best of ur ability. @notajp
@notajp 3 года назад
Yep, you can use that waiver for toilet paper. I worked for the county parks department several years ago. We had mountain biking trails, and all bikers had to sign a waiver before they could ride. The county attorney told us that those waivers weren’t worth the paper they were printed on, as they would not be considered a legally binding contract in a court of law. The signatures would have to be witnessed and notarized to have any chance of standing up in court....
@billyr9840
@billyr9840 3 года назад
@@richardcranium5839 In US a waiver will be considered as not valid by any court if you are trying to give someone permission to break the law. One law that comes to mind is negelance. Ivan is a smart guy, but I'm not so sure how smart it is to be filming yourself performing this type of sub standard repair ! Even though you are required to where a safety harness that is attached to a anchor point in the basket, if someone were to be ejected out of the basket due to running over a obstacle such as a rock or curb or depression in the ground while moving that boom I would think the liability would fall squarely on the owner and Ivan. That scenario of being ejected out of the basket has happened many times in the past. That machine should of been completely overhauled or retired long ago. There are cables in that boom that extend/retract it that are supposed to be replaced and certified I believe every 10 years or the machine should not be in use. I will bet anything judging on the condition that this machine is in that they have not been replaced or certified. I know this because I been using this type of equipment for many years as a union carpenter.

From the components on that board, $1500 really seems like the "we have you over a barrel" price. It looked like maybe they also rubbed the numbers off the chips? (Almost as if they knew the price would tempt you to replace components...) You could probably still replace the driver though, should be possible to figure out the pinout and buy an IC with reasonable specs and the same footprint. Of course that would take more time than the 'russian repair' :D

No one else will work on those machines. The companies that come to the job site and try to fix those machines are rip offs. If it’s not a battery, starter, or fuel they have to get towed back to the shop, and that’s where they will really get u good. New board new battery, who knows what else. Guy would have had a $4500 repair on this one. He’s Lucky to have Ivan who actually fixes the equipment and is very reasonable.

@fluffyblue4006
@fluffyblue4006 3 года назад
Both are valid fixes. The customer apparently doesn't mind: he signed a waiver and he didn't order a board replacement in those 4 months. The board probably just needed some capacitors replaced. But it's old. If you replace some caps now, you'll probably be replacing some others next year. Some of them are covered in silicon and the whole board is probably coated: a pain to work on. And it takes time. Probably not worth it. So, nice fix. But what you're gonna do when left/right fails? That needs to be proportional. ...or maybe not? It goes with Genie speeds, so, manageable. But imagine that your car would have buttons for left and right, instead of a steering wheel...

At this level of diagnostic complexity it s highly likely that this information of the circuit boards is proprietary to it's maker and they won't divulge their intellectual property and is not furnished to the general public. In most cases if a component has failed on the board you'll be advised to replace it and move on.

Unfortunately, thanks to lawyers and bottom-line margins, you won't find any schematics for stuff like that. It's a liability for the company, and how else would they make $1500 on a $100 board. The best case would be to do a visual on the board, but that probably won't show anything unless it is really fried.

you got it. The boom should be thrown off site with those modifications, another reason why I don't work on customer junk. I'd bet you any amount of money that unit has an expired annual inspection and no structural inspection. The ownness is on the owner and if a worker under him is using this pile the owner is big time liable for anything that happens if there is an accident or fatality and OHSA gets involved and finds out the boom has been modified.
@combrains1
@combrains1 3 года назад
^ This. My other question would be: how much did it cost the business in down time for that machine vs just spending the $1500 to repair it properly? Surely the repair cost pales in comparison to the downtime cost. Also, if the 'fix it cheap' mentality is part of their business ethos, what is the rest of the business like? I played those games before, here's your diagnosis, this is what i needs, I play by the safety rules and repair equipment so it's up to snuff of OHSA and the manufacturer i take pride in my work that keeps people safe, don't like it F.O. and take it somewhere else.

@@PineHollowAutoDiagnostics I don't know what the rules are like in the US, but here in NZ and, I believe Australia, if the machine doesn't have a current annual inspection cert, it's not allowed on site. A repair like this would violate that certification.Because of the way our OSH laws are set up, not only is the operator of the machine personally liable if an accident occurs, but everyone up to the owner or event the CEO of the company is also liable. Plus, we don't have waivers here - you can't contract out of the H&S laws. This is the reason you will find many in this part of the world absolutely baulking at this kind of repair :)

Looks good to me so pretty much came down to a $20 fix or a $2000 fix.... LOL... sure almost everyone is going on with the cheaper one of the two even if it adds an extra step when someone need to use it and the main thing there is that it can actually be used now and it's not like down the road if someone's willing to spend the money for the oem/factory fix it's not like they can't un-do it or even just watch the videos on what was done to get it to that point....... Also have you ever thought about maybe making some small stickers up with your business name/RU-vid channel's name to put on the vehicles/equipment you've already done videos on bc I really feel like it would help you advertise and also help if someone else is working on the same vehicle/equipment down the line...... it's pretty much a win win for all at that point but it's just a question for you and if you like the idea take it and run with it I'm sure that you can probably come up with many more ideas that would help the sticker idea grow into much more LoL Also THANK YOU for all the great content please keep it coming and I really like the equipment videos a lot you should actually do them more regularly....... thanks again

I would love to see Arduino's replace this type of stuff, then the manufacture can go stuff his intellectual property right up where the sun don't shine. I think you would only need the following (to start with): Arduino Mega, and relay board, you could reuse all the switches and joysticks on the basket controls. Same with modern vehicle ECU's replace them with Arduino's, open source, readily available and don't cost a fortune and they don't require proprietary software to update or configure.

I would of liked to have had a hand drawn diagram for the first repair but I think I got it. The good driver is split at the toggle and sent through the bad driver circuit.

I am getting the feeling that the electronics are the downfall of these Genies. A circuit board in a semi rainproof metal box is less than ideal for delicate electronics. Neat repair.

I am a bit surprised that the builders bother about 1500 dollars in such a massive building project (100 million dollars???), to be honest. I mean I know of building projects where they just write off the whole fleet of cars and vans completely at the end of the project (mostly one year). So, 1500 dollars is peanuts, I would think. I am probably wrong, but it surprised me.

Hey, I have a 2006 Genie Z60 and the steering does not work. The LED on the board does not light up when I move the joystick right or left
