One Winged Camellia Bowl! - Wood Turning

My friend Gary over at ThePapa1947 gave this piece of Camellia to me. I didn't know Camellia grew this large. The wood is very dense and hard and gave me some trouble in turning it, but the result was worth my hard work. I love the very odd, natural shape of this piece. By the way, I spelled Camellia wrong on the bottom of the bowl, dang it!

You take chunks of wood and turn them into pieces of art. Thank you for showing new turners that the wood doesn't have to be perfect!

Thank You Phil, Thank You Gary ( ThePapa1947 )...Camellia seemed like she did not want to be turned at 12:48 ( Phil please do that each week, love the excitement. Almost dropped my late lunch!!! )...So much fun Phil to sit back, watch, listen on how you work through your turning adventure...Just for the record Phil, YOU ARE NEVER BORING!!! no matter how long your video runs. Great one Phil....TM

A beautiful bowl, but I have not forgotten you owe us 2 Black Cherry. Can't wait to see if that small piece is a burl underneath. Hope you enjoyed the match. I'm so glad I found this video. I have a piece of wood somewhat similar to what you started out with for this project and I had not decided what or even if I could do anything with it but now I know what I want to do. It will be a while though as I'm just getting started in turning and I know I need to get some more experience before trying this. That said, I sure do appreciate you narrating your lathe speed, tool use, and that you are wearing a face shield and dust mask when starting. Sometimes we need that reminder that safety equipment is not something to forget about. Take care and thanks for the education and entertainment.

Phil, it’s adorable. I don’t know anyone who can turn everything you out your hands on and turns up to be a beautiful piece of art. Boy I have to beg to get some wood from a fallen tree. You lucky man, people get in line to offer you various types of wood. Stay safe Phil. Thank you for your video.

Thank you, Sylvie! 😊 You are right, of course. I have the best, most generous viewers on the planet! If not for them I would be turning only the cracked, bug infested wood that is common to my area. I'm truly grateful for the opportunity to turn such a great variety of wood.

Very distinctive piece, unusual, irregular and unique. I really appreciated that you showed the difficulties you encountered Phil. We can all learn from understanding that it's not always plain sailing and that we learn more when we overcome difficulties. There is an honesty in the way that you record your work Phil, an openness which is very engaging. This particular video was very instructive for me.

Really great stuff, once again, Phil. Turned out really great. I have to agree with Tuffy, "NEVER boring" only ever educational and certainly nail biting entertainment at times. Your intro on just where to place the piece reminds me of a David Ellsworth video in which he states how he never goes into a piece with a preconceived outcome, like you, he lets the piece guide him to the final end, you did exactly that with this wing.....STUNNING!!!

Hello sir, I'm 45yrs old and love woodworking. My grandfather was born in 1918 and lived to be 91. He taught me everything he knew about woodworking and I'm so thankful for it. I just found your channel and I think it's great! I've seen many wood turning channels, but never subscribed to any except for yours. There's something about you that reminds me of my grandfather, not that your old or anything, haha. It's the way you talk. I have always wanted a lathe, but don't see me getting one. At least I can watch you! Doing a great job sir.

Thank you, Scotty! I was a woodworker for 50 years before I retired and decided to become a turner. I don't recommend it for you. It's far too much fun and your life will change and if you are anything like me, you will miss woodworking a lot! Thank you so much for subscribing, I will try to be worthy. 😊

@@PhilAndersonShadyAcresWoodshop I really enjoyed your reply, thank you! I have some sycamore limbs that my grandfather had cut up for firewood that are about 4-6 in in diameter. I wanted to save anything that he had a hand in, I loved him more than anything else. Anyways, I have had these logs since 2009 when he passed. Do you think one of these could be turned into some type bowl or something? I used some 1 in diameter limbs he had cut up to make checker board pieces for a board I made and gave to my grandmother after he passed away. She passed away a few months ago at 99. Thank you for getting back to me sir. Scotty Johnson

@@scotty2735 Sure, a small bowl could be made from limbs that size. Or maybe a spindle turning like a vase or candle holder, etc.

I'm 76 years old. I learned basic wood turning at school, when I was 12-13, but non after that until recently, so I'm learning all over again. I bought the cheapest lathe I could find a few years ago, a chuck, and a cheap set of turning chisels, and, as you can see above still making mistakes. (Cost me about £500, but they are a lot cheaper in the USA, have a look on Amazon. com for a start, and then elsewhere for better prices. Tools and chucks are cheaper on AliExpress.) I've since added a couple of parting tools, 1/4 & 1/8''. _One piece of advice; if you want to do it, do it!_ There's no reason not to. There's more than enough instruction, (free on YT), to get you started. One tip, instead of using bowl gouges, start by using scrapers, they are a lot more forgiving, and are far less likely to dig in and snatch! I use a 1/2 round, and a skewed scraper for most of my work, on the outside and inside of bowls, and just occasionally use a bowl gouge for deep bowl work, inside the bowl. It works for me. My first 'commission' was to make a wooden 'foot' for an antique Napoleon Wine glass. My price? a bottle of Scotch!😊 .

Hi Phil, That may have been a bit of a fight but you won every single round apart from one when it went for a quick flight. LOL. I have never seen anything come off your lathe before. That is an amazing looking bowl Phil and the Howards really made the bark and grain come to life. Great work as always Phil. Take care buddy. Cheers, Huw

I kept wanting you to take about an inch off that wing. Just to round that corner off. But I think I'm glad you didn't listen to me. I think it looks a bit like a spaceship that lost a wing. It is quite pretty.

You said you were scared to death, me too. I'm surprised you have all your fingers unharmed. It was an interesting bowl and as beautiful as your other works, it is impossible to choose a favorite even if I have looked 2-3 times at some of your works. Carsten Sweden

Phil you had me sitting on the edge of the seat for the whole video! That was because the cat beat me to it and we had to share...LOL But I would have been on the edge if he was not there. Great job on some very difficult work. I knew there was a wing there and you sure did it justice. It looks fantastic with the wing and the extra bark. The Howard sure made everything look nice and warm and wonderful. I recall sharpening many times on the piece I turned as well. Only other wood I have turned that was harder was Iron Wood but that does not count. I just finished another piece of the Camellia yesterday and it beat me up pretty bad. You will see in a few weeks. Sure glad I gave you this one because you sure found a very cool shape inside. Great job and a pleasure to watch my friend, Gary

Haha! Yeah, ya always gotta watch for cats before you sit down! To be honest, I think I like the finish you got on yours better, but you are right about "warm and wonderful." The Howard's will do that every time. Thanks buddy, have a great evening! Don't forget the popcorn!
