You did convince me. I was dead wrong throwing those cassettes away! So this time, I had an original movie on VHS. Same problem. So I opened it up (you’re kind of inspiring), peeled the tape out, fast forwarded and rewinded the tape 6 times and it played fine again. You live to learn! And I really like the That’s tape you’re using! I think they’re some of the best type II tapes out there!

Another gem from the golden era of audio technology, recording was great, even if there will be any difference between the audio of the source and the tape, it was'nt hearable.

This is an amazing cassette deck. You were lucky to find it. I remember when you recapped it. I have a similar equipment from 1981, a JVC DD-7 direct drive. You may rest assured that yours is direct drive, even though there might be some gears playing around. Direct-Drive and 3 heads is just great as you proved. I suspect that at 4m05s the upper wheel contains a spinning magnet and, next to it, a hall effect semiconductor to sense whether it is spinning or not to protect the mechanism and the tape in case something gets stuck. And the other belt is for the tape counter. I find this hall sensor a great and simple idea for the era. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hall_effect_sensor

This was really enjoyable and relaxing. I loved the interesting camerawork in parts and the little interludes with the tiny delivery lorry. Chrome tapes can be very good indeed, it reminds me of S-Video vs RGB, and the jump each of them have from composite (which is ferric tape in this example I suppose). A few years ago I realised all the mix tapes from records my dad had made were on TDK Chromes, which might explain why I never noticed the things people disparage tapes as in my own usage, I never really experienced Ferric tape much. Never got new albums on tape, it was always dubs from records (or for new releases CDs), so always onto those Chromes.
@erwindewit4073
@erwindewit4073 5 лет назад
Kit Vitae oh, but there are some fabulously good type I ferro cassettes out there! But what I was using was the really cheap crappy stuff in a simple Philips boombox. No wonder it sounded crap! And if you can’t calibrate your tapes, if the bias of your tape is very different than what your deck was set up for (Japanese decks seem to usually be set up for TDK D (ferro) and SA (chrome), it could easily sound dull. Unfortunately, it took me a long time to figure that out 😂

@@MsMadLemonUnlike 2060 mine had just 2 belts one for flywheel one for tape counter, Had to change the flywheel belt and i replaced with more thicker and wider belt with same length. Now almost 2 year passed and still running super tactile. Only issue it doesn't like some of my old dusty cassettes but I know how to refreshen them. It's cheaper and only does playback and recording, no calibration and bias etc. But i like it for it's simplicity.😊😊😊

Great video. Just discovered your channel. I am surprised the wow and flutter was solved by replacing the belt. Back in the day I found that cleaning the pinch roll and capstan resolved the issue. The cassette deck must have been a service engineers nightmare (such a messy design).

Like aleady told from others: These 2 belts are for tape counter and hall sensor (control tape working / tape travel and autostop) and do not have usual any effect with WoF (wow & flutter). In exceptional cases only if one uses the wrong (too narrow) belts which then stretch too tight. The tape drive is easy to take out: 4 screws (2 top/2 bottom). For better WoF you should change the idler (wheel) gummi against a new one, or in minimum clean it with isopropanol alcohol (using tips), also some sand paper (1000 or more) could help if surface of idler gummi has not enough grip (gummi did harden some what). Likewise, the two discs (pinch rollers) which drives the idler wheel respectively (for fast forward, rewind and play) also clean with alcohol and tips. Additional the direct drive motor and capstan (with capstan axis) should taken out, cleaned and new lubricated (using sintered bearings oil or motor oil if not available, and some titan or graphite grease). Take care to not loose the transparent oil disc on the capstan axis (on pinch roller side, prevents that pinch roller gets oily from oil that comes out over time from the slide bearing). After this, when resampled the speed should adjusted (see manual, using DVM with frequency count function or frequency counter and speed test cassette 3kHz). Also cleaning capstan axis on the pinch roller and the pinch roller intensivly (alcohol or special rubber wheel cleaner + tips). Also when replacing belt always clean the guides / rolls also where theses belt "drives". This is best done by a piece of (white) thicker cotton wool which is soaked with isopropanol and which is repeatedly pulled through the guide rollers. Only after this then install new belts. This is even more needed for (capstan) "belt driven" tapes (absolute majority of tape decks). The "non-soft eject problem" usually comes from a worn o-ring in the damping element for the cassette compartment. This is difficult to repair and often hopeless and frustrating piece of repair. You can make a new o-ring (you often have to cut a new one some thinner with a razor blade) or brush the element with slightly viscous grease or silicon with extremely high viscosity. Often, a set screw on the back of the damping element which you can adjust something but often helps little. The TA-2060 is a very nice and good sounding vintage tape deck which won many comparative tests in the mid-1980s. I have one myself and and completely restored it.

I also mentioned it in the video towards the end that the belts dont affect the wow and flutter but somehow it disappeared, it was only subtle.

The belt you changed was for the tension on the left spool towards the heads while playing or recording. It's called back-tension . If it would't have no tension at all, you'd see the left tape half wobbling around which is awfull to look at .

I always believe that those contraptions are full of springs under tension, that jump into my face, when I open the case :-) Some months ago, I made a solder fume thing from a fan, too. It is a great thing. I was soldering over 40 years without. But with, soldering has never smelled better :-)

Actually, western music is not prohibited in those countries lol not sure where you heard this but there are a lot of Arabs who listen to it. If Amiga and commodore computers were so popular in places like Iran, Iraq, Syria and Egypt etc then it's not uncommon to see tech like this. I know someone from Lebanon who is into vintage audio electronics in a big way and listens to western music as well as Arabic. I'm Arab myself btw living in the UK, I speak Arabic and Spanish... But yeah, I agree, it should not make a difference nor matter to anyone what I am or where i'm from. Also Peter I think your information about Arab countries and Iran is severely outdated, by a century or so lol

Very nice looking Onkyo deck. Would have been a decent one back in the day. I’d like to get my Yamaha deck out one day and play around with it, I just don’t have the room atm. Though I have decent quality tapes, they haven’t been stored properly, and so I’d say they’d be no good now. Unfortunately these days, buying new/old tapes are expensive, because they are no longer being made by the main manufacturers, TDK, Sony, Maxell, BASF ect. Would love to get my hands on some brand new TDK SA-X tapes from the mid to late 80’s, they were the best sounding tapes to me! 🙂

Capstan motor is direct drive. Spool motor is in the center of mechanism and a idler wheel switch between the two spool axels and the spool motor pulley. The idler tire should be replaced but if the fast forward and backwards work fine idler rubber is probably still ok. The belts you replaced should not cause any wow or flutter I think. Capstan motor and pinchroller should be the ones causing the problem.

Maddi, Thanks for showing how to set the bias. I've never knew how to set it manually. Is HX a way of adding headroom to your recording? If that's true, shouldn't it be left on whenever you record?
@MsMadLemon

My pleasure :o) And yes Indeed HX should be left on when you record, but there's no need to have it turned on, on playback, unlike Dolby B, C, S.
@KenjiTech
@KenjiTech 5 лет назад
yes, HX (and HX Pro) is supposed to give you more headroom by keeping a balance between the bias level and the high frequencies present in the audio itself (wich on their own act as a bias of sorts) in short: HX is adjusting bias dynamically depending on the audio signal actually, this is the first deck I see that has a switch for HX. all the "HX Pro" decks i've seen do not have a switch for it so I assume it's enabled all the time.

The capstan (which is solely responsible for the speed of the tape) is what’s directly driven. The spool motor can be belt driven, since it has no impact on sound quality. (The other belt goes to the counter.) I suspect the wow and flutter is from the pinch roller, as others have commented.

I always wondered how legal those service manual resellers were. It pisses me off when I finally find a manual online but it is stuck behind a paywall. They definitely aren't the original company and thus at the very least are committing copyright violations for selling material that was published by another company with their registered trademarks and logos all over. Moreover many manuals specifically say something like for internal use only or not to be distributed.

Well done on fixing your cassette deck! :o) Yes, sometimes service manuals can be useless! :o( In general: I wonder, would it sometimes be a good idea to photograph the fixing process in stages if there is a lot of disassembly going on? This is something I do when matters get complicated. I did notice that the deck is a single capstan machine - nothing wrong with that, some high-end machines employ a dual capstan system with one 'trailing' capstan (on the left) running at slightly a slower speed. This helps the tape transport system maintain a smoother and more reliable tape transport - well, that's the theory anyway! :D Thumbs up - a great video, I really enjoyed it. Many thanks Ms M.Lemon.

I recommend photographing too when disassembling anythign complex, thought since i'm personally already videoing it, there's no need :o) Yes this is a single capstan machine, the dual capstan is for the auto reverse feature.

@@MsMadLemon A dual capstan system is used for an auto-reverse deck like my old AKAI GXC-75D, but my Revox B215, Nakamichi DR10, Sony TC-KA7ES, and Teac V8030S are all dual capstan and are only one-direction machines. If they are properly aligned, we can play cassette tapes with the pressure pad taken *out*. Lovely to see someone enjoying their retro HiFi! Regards and thanks for the feedback! :o)
