Onkyo TX-NR Receiver DTS chip Reflow Procedure

This unit has more than one issue. The sound matrix from the amp is not working due to the DTS chip desoldering from the board. It causes cold solder joints and in some cases will come on if the chip is heated. The chip expands with heat so cooling it can also make them come on when they shrink. This one also has a low voltage power supply issue. 12v and 5v section issues. Being too high! I will go back to the drawing board to get that issue fixed, then the DTS chip should be okay. I can get the chip and can replace it, but I also don't want to do that until I'm absolutely sure that is the issue. The chip is bad from either taking a hit from heat or from me working on it. The main issues at this point are the low voltage supply problems.

Thank you so much for this! I was about to throw out my TX-NR616 but thanks to you I was able to fix it quite easily. I added a small Raspberry Pi heatsink to it, so hopefully it lasts.

SUCCESS!!!! From another youtube video I heated up the CPU chip labeled DTS Dolby digital to only 185 degrees F. No luck. I searched for another video if there was something I could do differently. I happened onto this gentleman's video and applied heat from my lowest speed of my heat gun and using my laser temp thermometer. I got the chip up to 480 degrees F. I allowed it to cool down to the same temp of other chips on the HDMI board. I turned on the unit after plugging it back into the wall. Two clicks upon pressing the power/standby button, then waited another 4 to 5 seconds to hear another double click and low and behold the speaker position diagram or display which NEVER came on before appeared. This part of the display was not lit in the photograph used by the seller of this unit on Facebook marketplace.

Hi! I also have an Onkyo TX-NR414 amplifier. After switching on, there is no sound. My question would be, how long did you heat the chip? In addition to sound, there is no network and USB.
@john6pack
@john6pack 7 лет назад
To be clear, I used a flux pen around the edges of the DTS chip. I don't have a temp controlled heat gun so I just used the one I have and turned it on and off until I could see the flux starting to smoke. I used Isopropyl alcohol to clear the flux but I always buy 91% pure alcohol for electronics work (and all purposes) instead of the regular ~70%, that way it has less water in it and more quickly evaporates and cleans up faster. Anyway, otherwise followed Shane's instructions and it worked on the first try! Thanks Shane!

Thanks for video, saw a few of these. I had a 616 with no sound, donated to my MakerSpace. Tried the hair dryer option, worked for a few minutes, then made a card-cutout wrapped with foil and placed over the dts chip, so the chip was the only thing showing. Hit it with a workshop heat gun, didn't work first time, but removed the foil cover and tried again, not for a long time, but it worked. Still OK after three days. It is a great piece of A-V equipment. Cheers, John
@ShaneCarles
@ShaneCarles 6 лет назад
Awesome. I'm glad you got it running. It takes enough heat to melt the solder under the chip. The foil was blocking that heat from getting to the surface like it needed to.

Bit sceptical on this..as tx-nr609 was also having issues reading usb drive...stuck on initializing. Also have no sound problem. Followed what you did...flux on the dts chip and heated with heat gun...IT WORKS!!! Will see how long this fix will last ....Thank you for posting video.

Thank you for posting the video. This helped me to fix my in-laws Onkyo Ht-693. I heated up both of the DTS chips with flux and a heat gun that I bought at Home Depot following your direction. I cleaned it up with electronics contact cleaner and viola, it started right back up! My father in-law is going to be so impressed (probably not, but we can dream, can't we).

Got'em. Took me refreshing Chrome a couple of times. I'm glad you got it working. It could fail again though. What I was doing to make them last longer, is to glue a heat sink onto the DTS chips. With the unit on and the top off (be careful not to touch any 110v wires that should be on the right side looking at the front) touch the DTS chips to see how hot they get. If they are too hot to touch or it is more than just warm, heat sink them. I used epoxy to glue them on with. A very thin dot in the center of the chip, then press the heat sink on to spread the glue thin.

btw op says he uses jb weld and then says lets hope there isnt a fire.... use a small well finned heat sink and thermal paste infact i used one the size he holds up last is a bit big............. that i salvaged off a south-bridge... and 420c from a heat gun for about 15 to 30 sec is fine across the chip. then let it coooooooooooooool. seriously leave it . bam test it and if it works rejoice mofos!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Thank you for the kind words. It really means a lot to me. Replacing caps is really easy. I usually try to find the best brand cap and replace with the same values. These boards have SMD caps so if you can't find the right voltage they may not line up if you go up in voltage which is okay function wise, but since they are SMD the caps have to line up with the soldering pads.

A gentleman said he was able to repair his unit by changing all the diodes on the drive board, the problem with reflowing is that the procedure deteriorates the chip, if it is overheating it is probably because it is short-circuited, the diodes on the drive board cope directly with the electric current distribution in the analog phase of the circuit, these signals must go directly to the DTS chip which causes the overheating and the soldering problem, for this reason if you do the reflow procedure it will not solve, it will be just a palliative, check the drive board.

I have a Onkyo TX-NR 717 that may have had this done on warranty a few years back. The issue now is no HDMI video out put. It's not a an issue with the cables as I am using a manual HDMI switch until I get this solved/fixed. Audio works fine and the matrix is displayed fine. It is also started nagging for firmware updates. I did via network, and USB and get an error every time, so I stop trying. I did hard reset until cleared and restarted no change to video or update. I opened it up and that DTS chip has a sticker that says "new". Ideas? I have a reflow gun, but don't want to hit the DTS chip and risk losing audio. I like the 3 zone on this unit and finding a new one with this is expensive. Great Video!

Been doing this for over 3 years on these receivers, some of these suffer from the solder issue you address here, however these chips still eventually fail regardless of heat or soldering, this is only a temporary fix i'm afraid may last 6 months or so depending on how much use it gets
@ShaneCarles
@ShaneCarles 8 лет назад
They usually last after doing this if the chip is heatsinked. I was going to do one on replacing the caps but I lost the shop and all of it's contents in the flood down here in Louisiana. We are rebuilding and I hope to be back at it by the end of the year. The only thing is I lost all of my equipment. I have to replace everything from the ground up.

Can I clarify whether the FM receiver does not go through this DTS chip? (seems reasonable) My TX-SR313 has audio when using the radio, but none of the HDMI channels, so I suspect the DTS chip. But just wanted to clarify before I start with the reflow tool. Thanks, Anton
@ShaneCarles
@ShaneCarles 5 лет назад
If the radio receiver is driving an analog signal than no, it doesn't run through the DTS chip for audio conversion. You may hear a relay click when switching to the radio in that case. I've never thought about that as a test but then again none of the other analog inputs or outputs would work when the DTS chips do this on other models. The key thing to look for is the speaker matrix. The left part of the display that shows what channels are active. If that's coming up, then the DTS chip may be okay. I would try just warming the chip up at first to see if you get a change before going ahead with the reflow.

@@ShaneCarles Thank you. I don't believe me model has that individual speaker display but I will try some non-HDMI inputs and try gently heating the IC first.

great video!!! just one thing, the over heat isn't caused by the chip itself but rather the power supply that sits under the hdmi board. i dont know why onkyo do not use some fan to cool it down. the power supply uses rectifiers and regulators that get really hot, and they literaly cook the hdmi board. my onkyo tx-sr 607 had similar issue because of it. the caps got dry really fast. my pioneer vsx 921-k have the same chip and no problems at all, just because the unit runs way cooler than the onkyo. either way i might buy some onkyo with this fault and repair it myself
@ShaneCarles
@ShaneCarles 6 лет назад
These receivers do have fans. This one has 2. A push and a pull fan. But to tell you the truth, I've NEVER heard them come on but that could be because the sound was so LOUD from these receivers, I probably couldn't hear the fan come on. I needed to test one of these with the top off and running at 75% volume on 7 Polk tower speakers. Then take a look at the heat situation while I jam.
@ruifaias4058
@ruifaias4058 6 лет назад
the problem is that the power supply gets hot even with no sound output, at least in my older onkyo. if it has a fan just for the power amplifier, then the hdmi will always get super hot. if it ouver heats even with fans, then onkyo have a really bad design on this units
@danmorgan4934
@danmorgan4934 5 лет назад
Actually, it's both. The DTS chip is being supplied too much voltage due to the design of the board, AND the heat from the PSU board underneath further accelerates the problem. My TX-NR515 lasted 6 years before giving up the ghost, others have had their amps last for as little as 2 years. I'm sending mine away to see if it can be repaired, if not, I'll try the method in the video, in addition to adding some heatsinks to the larger chips on the board. The comment in the video about the fan on the heatsink is total tosh though. The fan will help wick the heat out of the heatsink. Why do you think PC-CPU coolers have had fans for the last 30-odd years, if it doesn't work?

My DTS chip has a sticker on it saying "new", so maybe it's been replaced before or is a new generation of chip? In any event, this trick worked for me and got my HT-R990 back up and running momentarily, just ordered some flux so I can see if I can make it a more permanent fix

Excellent video and tutorial. I have a Denon AVR with similar no-audio issues, from either analog (tuner, RCA cables) or any digital sources. All other functions seem to work (OSD, display, etc. onboard diagnostics all seem fine except "AUDIO PACKET DOES NOT COME FROM SOURCE." So I assume it's a similar issue to the Onkyo. Is a DAC or DSP still part of the signal flow even with analog sources? I am preparing to attempt a reflow but I'm not sure which chip is the most likely culprit. Advice on a good way to diagnose? Turn it on and see what gets hottest and start there? From what I can figure from the service flowcharts, it's either the DAC, the DSP, the input selector chip, or the volume control chip. is the Onkyo DTS chip their DSP, or their DAC? Thanks for any advice!

Why not put the heat sink on as soon as it cools down, if the speaker matrix is on and you're getting sound? Why wait? What if the chip overheats again before you put the heat sink on? I saw on another video someone using an infrared thermometer to measure temp, since they didn't have a temp controlled heat gun.

Good video. No, you can't overheat the chip by using a fan with "heat staying inside of the chip" :)) That's a hilarious statement BTW. However, fan is not needed if it stays below 100 degrees
@JonathanDFielding
@JonathanDFielding 5 лет назад
Yeah, he lost some credibility when he said adding a fan to a heatsink will cause the chip to burn up. It actually will improve the heat sinks ability to pull the heat out. The heat sink will pull heat out through conduction then the fan adds convection and it improves the heat sinks ability to pull heat out.
@ShaneCarles
@ShaneCarles 5 лет назад
What I meant by that statement was, there is no mounting options for that chip on the board. So the heatsink would have to be glued on and if the surfaces didn't meet correctly then cooling the heat sink would trap the heat in the chip. I've seen that before.

Shane, Thanks for the great video! I have TX-NR828 with the same DTS chip problem. I have the same heat gun as you. I placed the appx 3/8" snoot on the heat gun, and set the temp to 650F and the airflow at about 80%. I heated the chip for what seemed quite a while - I could see the flux pulsing in and out from under the chip. However, the reading I get on my laser thermometer is only about 300F at the chip. IS that hot enough? (seems like it should be). Anyway, I tried this about three times, and I still get no "light". I see the FM section "tuning" but get no output in my headphones. I tried all the THX/DTS settings etc... Any ideas? Thanks!

I've had to replace every single one of the capacitors on these boards before to get them working again. If that doesn't fix it then the chip is bad.

@@steveweber7902 - No problem. Let me know how it goes. Also, check the temp of the chip if you get it going after its been on for a while and see if its getting too hot. Most of these devices crash in the BGA DTS and make reflow work again, but after a while it goes back, I had not seen anyone changing components, I think that here in Brazil some technicians act in bad faith and do this or change the chip or even change, change the capacitors and charge the value of the chip.

Shane, My TX-NR609 has HDMI from front AUX (ROKU) visible on screen, has sound through HDMI to TV (no speaker matrix visible) and can output FM stereo via headphones in DIRECT mode only. Also the Network port will not show link on router AND the USB port does not pass power and does not see 3 firmware files on root of USB stick. Are all these problems related to silly DTS chip? Gonna cook it with a hot air station as soon as my thermocouple arrives. The chips seem to be available ~$20-25 new from China now. Gonna check those caps too. The amp just doesnt seem to kick on without that speaker matrix.
@ShaneCarles
@ShaneCarles 5 лет назад
Hmmm. Damn. That's some crazy different issues but with no speaker matrix, it sure sounds like the DTS chip. That's all analogue to digital issues from the sound of it
@ShaneCarles
@ShaneCarles 5 лет назад
But. The USB has me wondering. Take a USB cable you can cut so you can check the red and black wires for 5v there. Let's see if you lost power supply somewhere. Maybe capacitors.
@ShaneCarles
@ShaneCarles 5 лет назад
Could be 2 issues like I was seeing on this unit where it had 6v on the 5.2v rail. It should be a tad over 5v for voltage sag but not 6v. Capacitors were the issue on that.

Great video, I ordered a rework station and it's first job will be my TX-NR636. I'm going to follow exactly what you do. My unit has two of those infernal chips. Hmmmm..... The most aggravating issue it has is the video blinking out till the unit is off for 20 mins but sometimes the sound gives me grief till I do the same. Is there a chip for each?
@ShaneCarles
@ShaneCarles 6 лет назад
I don't think there is a DTS chip for the video side, it's just used for converting audio from analogue to digital and vise versa. It would be where the SPDIF goes and when it has an issue like overheating and desoldering from the board by cracking the solder joints when it flexes from the heat then cooling over & over, you lose the audio matrix grid on the display and the amplifier relay never clicks to fire up the amp. This is the most common issue that happens. Also HDMI doesn't switch in some cases.
@ShaneCarles
@ShaneCarles 6 лет назад
And thank you. The camera I was using is a great camera, but I was trying out settings on it when I made this video and I did finally get it smoothed out. The strange thing though, it plays and looks good when played local. RU-vid did something to it when I uploaded it. I didn't use any modifications either.
@ShaneCarles
@ShaneCarles 6 лет назад
For sure on the rework station. That will let you upgrade this chip to one that doesn't have the issue. Look into the part numbers on your chip and see if there is a package update that matches the grid type of the original. They have updated these DTS chips for most of the HDMI boards.
@seanbittner7136
@seanbittner7136 6 лет назад
:-) After about a year the video would drop off after a while. Fast forward a year and now I get about 5 minutes of video. What's an SPDIF? I was messing with it a couple hours earlier and touched one of those chips to see how hot (it wasn't hot) and the video dropped. I don't know what to do, I don't want to buy another amp and should not have to and Onkyo is in denial. Any suggestions?
@ShaneCarles
@ShaneCarles 6 лет назад
SPDIF is the square ports on the back of your receiver. Those are for optical SPDIF digital audio and they also have the single orange RCA jack for coax SPDIF Digital Audio in. Lets say you have a desktop PC and it has SPDIF Optical out on the back panel. You would take a toslink optical cable and connect that optical out to one of the optical ins on the receiver. You go to the video input settings and change the audio to SPDIF Audio 1 (Most Onkyo receivers have 2 of these...1 & 2) or something like that. That would then give you the digital audio tracks of movies in DTS surround sound or whichever surround sound coding was used, it switches it for you and you hear a relay click when its working. The sound range is instantly changed to a much higher sound quality and the channel separation is unreal. I can do a video on a newer Onkyo Receiver I have here that's very much like the way its done on all of them and show you where those settings are. Any audio device that you aren't using HDMI for would use this since the video output may be something other than HDMI. HDMI passes digital audio over the cable but I think on a computer audio setup, even if the computer has HDMI, it sounds better with the SPDIF Optical doing audio because the chipset would be Realtek and the HDMI video out would be Intel, Nvidia or ATI...something like that. The audio drivers for those are simple & not very great in some cases.

Shane, I bought an Onkyo TX-NR555 supposedly refurbished. I got it home and plugged everything in. First thing I got was error "Check SP Mode" and it would shut back down. I took all the cables off and started it again and same thing. I reset it per Onkyo's site. Now it turns on but only in Zone2 mode. I still get no sound. Can you please advise? Thank you
@ShaneCarles
@ShaneCarles 7 лет назад
Do you get a speaker matrix on the display? The common issue with most of these are the DTS chip on the HDMI board. Check SP Mode means a short across the outputs somewhere. If no speakers are connected then you have an internal short. Could be a capacitor or transistor output shorted.
@ShaneCarles
@ShaneCarles 7 лет назад
Check SP Mode stands for Check Speaker wiring from what I can read. But if no speaker wiring is connected then that would be an internal short across the outputs somewhere.
@ShaneCarles
@ShaneCarles 7 лет назад
Check the speaker terminals closely and make sure there are no stray strands of wiring still under the banana screws. All it takes is one jumping across.

Hello, I have watch your video and follow it like you said, but while I was reflowing the chip, I heard a crack sound and later on, I found out that there are some bubbles coming out of a small place between the black insulator and chipset board. After viewing with magnifier, I saw a little crack between the insulator and the chipset board. That's if mean the dts chip is damaged? But the sound work when zone 2 or the Bd\Dvd + power feature is used to ignore the hdmi board.
