I have a deep seeded resentment for those who try to force authors to write based on a political agendas. One of my greatest peeves is the demand for racial diversity in a medieval European type of setting, and the accusations of racism if you choose to ignore that demand.

Every big publisher now has a leftist sensitivity reader that edits the books. Every story has to conform. Unless you're an established novelist. I'm sure Pahaniuk gets away with stuff nobody else will, unless they're independent. New novels are tepid for a reason.

It also assumes this weird ethnic essentialism. Like Someone born in LA of Iranian descent automatically has a better grasp of that history. Like you said, you should be respectful and do research, but anyone can do that regardless of their background.
