Awesome Video Bro`! As far as I know, this knife was sharpened once by a professional..... It was used several times for camping and survival befor it got handed over to you... Nothing heavy or major was done with it during this time... So actually I´m a bit surprised and disappointed that it broke so fast! Haven´t expected that! It was sold in Germany at a very high price......280 Euro if I remenber correct..... It should have done better for this..... Thanks a lot for this great test mate!!!! The nothern German Fans! the m9 is fundamentally flawed , when i was in the army they didnt even issue them to us when we deployed , we just went to the afees and got our own , because no matter how good the blade was that shit tier tang was just to big a weakness . also the saw on the back isnt for wood , its to cut through helo or aircraft skin in an emergency. great vid joe!

I used to own one of those in 1986-87! The one I had was made by Buck. It was called the Phrobis III M9 Bayonet! Hands down, one of the BEST knives I ever owned. 😊

After batoning the bayonet could no longer be mounted on a rifle. The saw was for cutting through soft aluminum of a helicopter. Should've tried to cut a car door with it, not wood. Yes the rat-tail tang is the weakest point of the knife, but I gotta say. It held up much better than I thought it would. The biggest complaint soldiers actually had for it was it was just too damn heavy. And the sheath isn't MOLLE compatible so there is that.

Fun video! About the knife: I was surprised how little material (diameter) there is on the rat tail! If good steel is used that is well heat treated then such a small diameter of steel should hold for quite some time. But surprisingly it cracked like cast iron. This is not what the knife owner wants. He could have lasted more. Disappointment. Thank you for your videos!

Looking at military bayonets reminds me of the M7 bayonet I was issued during my military service. The steel wasn't very hard. While in the barracks, we would rub the bayonet on stairs or curbs to dull the edges and make it safer. During field tactical training, we would sharpen the edge with small stones to make wooden covers for camouflage. (I spent a lot of time in foxholes as an artillery observer.) The edge would get dull, but it was easy to sharpen again. THX to review bayonet !!!

I bought a Buck M9 Bayonet back in 1995, still have it today. Never done anything with it though. They also fir onto the F88 Austeyr. When I was in the Australian Army we snapped Buck M9 bayonets in the exact same spot all the time. It was so common we didn't have to submit an Loss & Damage forms to get a new one. The rat-tail tangs are crap. Wish you had of used the wire cutter to test it out. They too broke all the time when trying to use them to cut fencing wire.

420hc or 420jc or 420 is a basic inox steel with very little amount of carbon. It can take abuse, of course, there is almost no carbon again, but it will cut after only wood? no. It will chip if nicely tempered, and will take a fine edge easily. But easily will be dull after few cuts. shYt steel for shYt knife. But ok, if you pay less than 20 bucks. Of course Buck knife are also made in 420hc at a very high price. Amazing how they still operate.

My US Army unit, the 7th Light Infantry Division (ironically, the 'Bayonet Division'), was amongst the first inits to receive the M9. My division was very serious about our nickname, and ran a 3 mile bayonet course a couple of times a year. O broke three of these on the end of an M16a2, and every time it was a alash series against the hard-plastic 3d commie bayo targets. This was feom 1986 to 1990. Each time the blade broke in the same area, where the blade reduces ro the tang; we were told that it was an issue with heat treating. They were a great utility tool in the jungle, but I will pass on bayonet fighting with them.

I forgot to comment that I used to own 3 genuine Glock field knives when they were kind of new and had no teeth on of them. I did some extensive knife throwing with them against cardboard covered plywood. Eventually all of the blades started to come out of the grips, and I found out they also are kind of rat tanged and not full rat tangs. Not a hard fix. Coated the hole inside the grips and the tangs and re-assembled them and problem solved. Not use a good quality slow curing epoxy for this type of repair. It is stronger than the fast-curing ones. The Glock grip material is amazedly strong and give support to the rat tang. When I was throwing the knives the point of the hand would sometimes hit the handles but would deflect off and leave only a slight scratch on the plastic.

I will not accept dinner table steak knives without full tang, why would I ever accept a hunting & camp knife without full tang.

It looks rather AK-47 Bayonet inspired. Wow, that tang is weak compared to the blade. No surprise it broke at the wirecutter hole.

When I was serving in New Zealand Army I really wanted an M9. The Australian soldiers had the M9 and we had the older M7. I thought the M9 looked badass. However with experience I strongly suspect the M7 was way stronger than the M9. That tang / handle on the M9 is a war crime. 🇦🇹 🇳🇿

I think the blood groove is the clip that hooks onto the sheath for wire clippers. But it’s a great video nonetheless!

When I was in the Vietnam war era US Army the bayonet was the M-7. I would have expected the M-7 tip to at least bend in the first test stabbing through the car body if not entirely roll to one side and the tang on it is also weak. The edge retention on them was also poor. I think the M-9 is a huge improvement on that. Another reality is that from the M-4 bayonet to the M-7 bayonet the blade and tang style survived through 3 wars. So, a much weaker bayonet surveyed the 3 wars and their field use. And was not found so inadequate that it was changed. Mybe someone can comment if during training the M-9 tangs broke and what the case or causes were. Or did the tangs really break in actual field use? The last issue is that the US tries to provide adequate equipment cheaply. There is another example. The US issued Ka-bar type knives would fail early on in the destruction tests. The have thin tips and narrow tangs. Yet they have been used in every US war since WWII and have a good reputation. No one has said they are unbreakable. But they must be adequate in their normal uses. People in the military continue to buy the commercially available ones and put them to use.

2 facts about this POS: The saw is meant to slice open the aluminium skin of airplanes. Yes, really. The "tang" is in fact really tiny and threaded into that rod inside the handle. That rod is not the tang. This knife is a prime example of what you get when government officials order something they have no clue of from a company that has no clue either.

Strange..i have did heavy chopping with my m9..i have batoned very very hard..it never let me down.. It broke when you hitted it multible times on that car.. Maybe you hitted somthing hard? I would say i must can handle the hits on the car.. The steel is not hard.. It would be interesant to do this test with another m9.. Because maybe your m9 has a little fracture in the steel? Or a manufacturer fault? I really dont know. I like this bayonet very much for the purpose where its made for. Although..you made a very nice video again! Keep doing this great work.. O yes..the saw is not made to saw wood..but its for aluminium. The saw is only good for making notches in wood..to make hunting traps or to hang rope one the notches.. Ok..take care Joe.
