One gazelle pilot was critically wounded during serval. He rtb rather than land and do first aid bringing his crew back. He died shortly after landing from bloodloss. He was originally only get thanks from the state but the onslaught of critics coming from french public got him awarded the légion d'honneur He deserved by sacrificing himself to save his crew. He was our first loss during serval

We also lost a 2000d when a pilot relived himself. During the manoeuver his helmet bag strap got caught in the emergency cutoff switch and broke it after flipping it off causing the plane to loose power. Both crew ejected after their escorting 2000-5 pilot called that they were getting too low and the backseater pulled the handle. The pilot was still trying to save the plane when the backseater punched them out

That reminds me of the Russian who discovered their 80/0 ejection seat was actually 0/0, when his control stick got caught on the ejection handle. Luckily the thing was set to his seat only so the pilot didn't go too.

I love how the helicopters were asking for support from the fixed wing and cap et al were completely ignoring them :-)! Embarassing for Fi! Enjoying these mission designs - a bit less hectic but kind of relaxing! Felt sorry for the MI-8 pilot too! He got the gunner from the Apache and then got too high after takeoff - thought he was going to get away with it until the fire started!

In reality, buddy lasing was often practiced by French Air Force during Afghanistan, Serval, Chammal, and Harmattan: Mirage F1 didn't had targeting pods, but they have 30mm guns which were useful during show of forces and CAS situations. So usually they've been paired with 2000 Ds or 2000 Ns which had targeting pods but no guns. (one French Mirage 2000D pilot, Cdt Scheffler, spoke about it in his book "la guerre vue du ciel" - which can be translated as "War Viewed From The Sky"-)

One thing I’ve been doing is rescue missions. Set up air to air battles and wait for a pilot to bail and then go get him. They land in some of the most remote and dangerous areas you can imagine. And the randomness makes it exciting. I know you can pick up your own coalition but what about enemy pilots? I’ll have to try it out and see. Does anyone know?
