Once i saw you on the bench with the pad assembly i did the same, and located the pads successfully , Many thanks from Cheshire UK BUT the squeal remained, at 10.08 you show a guide being put back in, mine is tight whereas yours is lose. I think the cradel has a fault, will try cleaning to get a smooth operation as you show.

Thanks for the video, very clear what you need to do. I really struggled to get the bottom bolt/damper undone, I hand to use grips as my spanner just slipped and my car also has an electric handbrake but this didn't effect the job, I just released it with the button first

Thank you very much for the video, great job! My wife has an Astra J Sports Tourer 2011 and this helped me service her car including new discs/pads. It has electronic handbrake which I put in "service mode" using a diagnostic computer, then you can push/turn the piston back in to fit the new pads. When I changed to winter tires today, pieces of the shield inside the break disc fell off because of rust. Do you by any chance know how to replace them? Thank you and regards from Sweden.
@kaukolaDIY
@kaukolaDIY Год назад
Do you mean the metal brake disc shield behind the wheel hub and the brake caliber? I haven't change that, but to remove it, i think you have to remove the wheel hub first, and that's a little bit bigger job to do, especially if it's rusted in place. I will have this job coming in some point, but i hope not very soon.
@JC-fm1er
@JC-fm1er Год назад
@@kaukolaDIY Yes, its the thin black metal shield that "appears" when you remove the brake disc att approx 03:19. A couple of bolts visible behind the wheel hub in your video, guess I could not see them for all the dirt and rust. Will probably leave it in a shop for this job. Thank you for your response!

the black part of the slide pin is anti-rattle.
@filysoussokho7233
@filysoussokho7233 3 года назад
The black rubber on the guide pins is to avoid noise from the brake callipers (they can vibrate without it) when you go over bumps ect.. discovered it some days ago.

Thats a really good piece of information , i bought a new overhaul kit from autodoc so new guides and rubbers but they are still tight in the guide hole on the cradle as shown at 10.08 i have a bad feeling its going to be a new caliper, i am suffering brake squeal its not the acoustic wear indicator

@kaukolaDIY
@kaukolaDIY Год назад
I'm sorry, but I have no experience of electric handbrakes. As far as i know, Astra J models have "old style" electric handbrake. Electric motor is not integrated in the brake caliber, like it is in newer Astra K models. That means, that it won't need any special programming or service mode, and it should also adjust by it self, like mechanical handbrake. But, I might be wrong. I hope you can find someone, who really know for sure.

Yes, this blue stuff is threadlocker, which prevents loosening caused by vibration.

What size is the adapter on the piston rewind tool? Would I use a 22mm or 32mm adapter plate?
@kaukolaDIY
@kaukolaDIY 5 месяцев назад
I didn't measure that plate. I bought a set with many different sizes, i used this set only for my car, and only one of those plates looks used, and this one is 33mm (nipple middle to another nipple middle).

If the new brake disc comes coated/painted, it has no oil coating on it, the paint comes off after a few brakes.
@kaukolaDIY
@kaukolaDIY 2 года назад
Yes, paint will come off, where brake pad touches. Coating on the disc, keep surface rust away from the other parts of the disc. Next time i would maybe buy fully coated discs. My front discs already have some surface rust in the middle, won't effect to the braking power, but doesn't look so nice.

Hi, super interesting video well explained : what's the thing you unscrew @1:29 ? what is the function of this?

Not replacing the caliper mounting bolts - bad move. These are Torque/Turn bolts, which mean they can only be used once, as they are stretched when originally tightened. You must use new bolts, torqued to 100Nm, then turned 60-75 degrees. Re-using the old bolts risks having them fail, which can cause a sudden wheel lock up. I know they are expensive, but it's safety first.
@Frank_Audun

I have never heard anyone saying you need to install new caliper mounting bolts…
@kaukolaDIY

Some service manuals says, that you should always install new caliber bracket bolts. Might be, that it's better to have new ones, those are not that expensive.

How does that damper work?
@kaukolaDIY
@kaukolaDIY Год назад
Damper in rear brakes supposed to reduce vibration of the brake system. How that really works, i don't know. Maybe it reduce braking noise somehow. Some other car brands have the same kind of things.

Hallo ik heb Electric handrem is dat het zelfde
@kaukolaDIY
@kaukolaDIY 3 года назад
Hello! Some car models need a scanner tool to set electronic handbrake to service mode. I'm not 100% sure, but in some of those cars, electronic handbrake motor is attached straight to the brake caliber. If i understood right, Astra J models with electronic handbrake, motor is in a different place, and it is just moving the hand brake cables, not the piston it self. So normal brake job should be about the same as with mechanical handbrake. I hope here's someone who has experience of that and knows better.

you don't need to degrease new paint coated brake discs...for an example if you buy such discs from ATE brand in their manual you will see its not necessary..that's why you have layer of paint instead of oil/grease to prevent rust...(degrease only non point coated rotors) regards

I'm not 100% sure, but i understood, that Astra J models with mechanical handbrake, like in my car, have self-adjusting park brake cable system. It doesn't require adjustment after a normal brake job, like discs and bads. It should adjust it self, if i apply and release the park brake lever few times after the brake job.
