If you're really worried about the hinges being a target, a good solution are jamb pins. Replace some of the screws in the hinge with those, and you can pop the hinge pins all you like, that thing isn't going anywhere.

One trick I learned for keeping doors in place if pins are removed- on the hinges, there’s normally 3 screw holes to go into the door and frame. I only do the the top and bottom one. In the middle hole, I take a big deck 3” screw and partially screw it in, leaving a half inch sticking out, and grind off the head. When you close the door, the cut off screw shaft will slide into the empty screw hole on the door, so if you take the pins out those still hold it in place.

I removed my handle set and installed in its place, a keyed from both sides deadbolt. I then put a metal latch cover over the jamb so you cannot stick anything in the frame regardless. I then removed one of the hinges and had one of the pins braised to the hinge. This is on my carport storage building, since there is no garage. Good luck getting in!

To eliminate security issues with an out swinging door, (which are inherently much safer in emergency exit situations), just leave the deadbolt on! In swinging doors can sometimes be opened with a strongly forced kick or blow with a heavy object, something that I proved a while ago before a friend started to remove his in swinging door to install an out swinging one, and a technique that won't work on an out swinging door. Is it noisy and attention getting? Yes, but they're usually inside much quicker than someone trying to open an out swinging door by pulling the latch free.

I've taken pins out of exterior doors before. It's very easy to do. And unless that door is super snug (less than a couple mm of clearance to the frame), it can easily be angled and slid out.

This is a good video and folks should pay attention and heed the warning. We all buy our homes and garages and take it for granted that locks all work well. They don't. As far as pulling the door open from the hinge side, I've seen it done,,,simple and quiet on the average door. A very simple hinge pin that replaces one of the hinge screws or is added will make it almost impossible to pull the door from the hinge side quietly.
@matthewjimenez610
@matthewjimenez610 5 лет назад
Many outside door hinges also have a security indent that keeps the door from sliding out even if the pins are removed. I’ve wondered why more doors don’t swing out in general, especially for small area like many bathrooms
@goodnight63

Take the butter knife through the top where the curve is with a lot of pressure, and use a small sharp knife to push the smaller thing into the door. I always have locked myself out whenever I didn’t have a key and today it just... didn’t work so after watching this video, I tried doing what I said above and now I can do it over and over
@ArtturiSalmela
@ArtturiSalmela 5 лет назад
You can get so called security hinges. They have a pin, which prevents lateral movement if someone were to remove the hingepin. Or if you're on a budget, you could replace a pair of the screws with one.

The door on my shop opens outward. A few weeks ago I ordered these things called "Hingemate" from ebay. They're just pins that install in the hinges. The idea is if the pins are removed then the door is more difficult to pull out. For about $11 Cnd I thought it would be a cheap thing to add a bit of security to my shop. This morning I go down to my kitchen, look out the window and see the shop door open. I think WTF?!!! I run out into the shop, look around and everything is there. I go back out and see that the key is still in the lock. I was out there late last night doing some sanding on my John Heisz outdoor workbench and forgot to lock the shop. So much for security.

Here in Sweden it's the norm to have an outwards opening door. It's more secure in the way that you can't kick it in as you can with one that opens inwards, in terms of safety then it's easier to get out of a building in case of emergency with a door that opens outwards and from a maintenance perspective then you don't get as much water stuck on the door sill which will cause it to rot. In the note on removing the pins of the hinges. You can add a couple of metal studs that sticks out of the door on the hinge side and drill some corresponding holes in the frame, these will make it much harder to remove the door if you try. Great job on the conversion though!!

I completely understand all of this and without trying to put anybody down. If somebody wants to get in they will. Even modern security alarms etc are not a deterrent to the person with determination. I know this from personal experience when I had my garage fully secure with all things available but a whipper snapper broke in grabbed a drill (which was one of my late fathers and had a sentimental value to me although nearly worthless) and off he went never to be seen again. These geezers are usually after a quid or 2 to go towards their drug habit and don't care about others. So in my opinion all you can do is slow them down. When it comes to an opening like yours John they would just jemmy it open as they did with mine. My opinion all before you jump down my thote !!

A knob never will be a reliable lock for any entrance even with a latch guard installed. I have seen several videos where professional firefighters can easily open them without any problem. The only way to secure your main entrance is with a good deadbolt. preferably grade 2 or grade 1 deadbolt.
@timderks5960
@timderks5960 5 лет назад
Relying on that little pin to positively lock your door is pretty crazy IMO. A dedicated locking bolt would surely make me feel a lot safer. PS., that latch guard can easily be defeated by a piece of piano wire or something similar. PPS. Another tip to prevent your door being unsafe when hinge pins get banged out: Security hinges, or if you don't have those installed, jamb pins. Deviant Ollam (professional penetration tester) addresses all this stuff in detail in his talks, I'd really recommend anyone interested in increasing the security of their doors to check him out.

@timderks5960
@timderks5960 5 лет назад
That's true, but slipping a latch makes a lot less noise than breaking a window or sticking a prybar in. The more effort it takes, the less likely the dishonest people will be to attempt it. Risk-reward situation. PS. Lol. Even though it's not Fort Knox though, I'd sleep better if I knew that bad people need to make a lot of noise to get to my stuff. Expensive or not, it's mine, and I'd like to keep it that way.

Tim - there seems to be some confusion when people watch a video like this. I'm NOT saying that a single lock like this is all anyone would need. I'm NOT saying that a deadlock is a waste of money. I'm just pointing out how it's supposed to work and why it's important that the door fits well and everything lines up properly. You can build the door from 3" steel plate and cover every edge with high security locks, if that's what makes you feel secure, but it still won't stop a determined thief from breaking in.
