Another enjoyable and informative video. Especially like the way you show that you don’t need to be an expert joiner to build such good baseboards. It’s worth noting, when buying plywood from B&Q, and other suppliers, they offer a free cutting service, so you can just the board you need, and get them to cut it to suit, including all your strips in one go, saving you time, money and effort. x The Bigfella x

Charlie, as far as I'm concerned I could watch you screw every screw so to say you won't bore us with every detail I think you are wrong. It all adds to the learning curve and ideas of how things can be done. So don't skimp on filming on how and what you are doing. This is facinating watching it all come together. I must admit though that the maths are a little bit beyond me. Keep the vids coming. Also, just a thought if you haven't already done so, the horizontal pieces of the "T" should be tapered to support the board. Regards, Terry
@ChadwickModelRailway
@ChadwickModelRailway 3 года назад
Hi Terry, I'm so pleased that you enjoy the videos. When you say tapered, do you mean the top angle of the "T" piece? Regards Charlie
@nickcoles518
@nickcoles518 3 года назад
@@ChadwickModelRailway I had the same thought - while you are dropping the height of each T, the top of those T's is flat. So when/if you come to screw the track bed to the top of them the track bed (with the thinner ply) may have an odd profile. I.E. You will get slope - flat section - slope - flat section - slope etc

@@ChadwickModelRailway Hello Charlie, that is how I am reading this comment. However, instead of tapering the top of the ‘tee’, it may be possible to assemble the ‘tee’ with 1no screw and wood adhesive. My thought is you would be able to place the baseboard on the ‘tee’s and the angle of the top of the ‘tee’ could be adjusted to follow the underneath of the baseboards. My regards, David.

Gradients take up more distance than people realise and unfortunately we only realise we have the slope too steep when we try to run a Train up it, which is far too late in the day, If anyone is struggling with gradients. an easy way to set it out, is to buy a pack of polystyrene Woodland Scenic Gradients, which come in different slopes: and are flexible for curves. They can be used to gauge the gradients, set your track too, Then do a practice run with track temporary pinned to test. Then using the polystyrene slope as a template to make wooden supports, for your gradient, and be used as many times as you need on your layout, Alternatively if funds would allow buy sufficient kits to complete the track work.. The gradients can be glued to a flat baseboard or an open framework Hope this helps x The Bigfella x

For what it's worth my entire layout is of open baseboard design made of that 9mm ply from B&Q. Similarly, I went for a brace every foot. It's held up pretty well in the 12 months that it's been together - only aprox a half mm sag at most of the track bed between braces. All the best, Jon M.

Hello Charlie. Interesting and well presented video as always. On our club layout we have a fiddle yard below accessed via long inclines at 1 in 60 (avoiding the drag of curves on a helix) and even that is a challenge for some locos with long trains. Steep pulls lead to slow running and you can end up with trains spending much more time running hidden than they are on the scenic section. We seem to spend quite a bit of time peering underneath to check what’s going on and to sort out running issues. I know you are using magnetism for enhanced adhesion, but I would think very carefully before committing to such a steep incline.
@ChadwickModelRailway
@ChadwickModelRailway 3 года назад
I think that you’re right Richard, it looks like an extra layer on the helix and reduce its incline is my best option. Regards Charlie

You need a laser level Charlie! Even a broken one that don’t self-level would be ideal for you here... setting up inclines (helix) transitions and the likes. You don’t need to follow the laser line exactly (can be to perfect). Working with such a laser line and OUT of LEVEL or OUT of PLUMB is more common than you think. If you do work in this fashion, pencil a few “fixed” datums around the helix and incline areas, in case laser line needs relocating. Auction site you’ll find one spares or repairs cheap... as long as laser works. As always 👍 from me. 🇬🇧

@@ChadwickModelRailway Yeah, some you can lock-off and some you cant. Some flash when severely out of level/plumb which can be annoying. I suggested a used level perhaps one that could be doctored internally to suit your needs. It really is worth looking into when “civil engineering” on a micro scale. Such as yourself. Hope this helps anyway. 👍🏻

My gosh Charlie that line into the helix looks like a ski slope!! I would strongly advocate for adding another loop to the helix lowering the clearance between each loop to the absolute minimum. If one has to choose between two conflicting criteria, to me, reliable operation on the mainline is paramount. Then deal with the resultant increase in the grade into the station. Scenically it would be easier to "sell" a short steep approach into a station than an overtly unrealistic length of steep mainline.

I’m with you on this one mate, I think you’re pushing on an open door. But it’s worth checking it out to see what is viable. Regards Charlie

@@ChadwickModelRailway It would be nice to keep enough gradient to make it 𝑙𝑜𝑜𝑘 like the main-line is climbing a bank. I would have to agree though, that does look a wee bit steep, even for BR(W). If you ease the gradient using the helix, the climb to Barnstaple may help to give more of an illusion of the main-line climbing too, in the opposite direction. Coupled with whatever actual slope remains in the main-line, it should still look pretty impressive. Something that occurred to me: the junction at the top of the hill might look more impressive if you can use some fancy, very gentle pointwork, giving a really realistic profile to the flow of your lines. I know someone makes "𝑒𝑥𝑝𝑟𝑒𝑠𝑠" points - Peco? As an important feature on the layout, that might help avoid the slightly unrealistic junctions we see all too often , on 𝒐𝒕𝒉𝒆𝒓 layouts of course.😁 Please don't skimp on filming the construction of the open-frame scenery. You won't "bore us"; this is something that isn't often covered. Happy New Year Charlie. I wonder what Chadwick will look like this time 𝒏𝒆𝒙𝒕 year.

Ah, the joys of open-frame basework. Nearly de rigeur in US layouts, often less-common bits of dimensional lumber (1x3, 2x3 and the like, with flatwork plywood supported with 1x2 scraps--often bargain bin scraps and offcuts from the local lumberyard. Often only the ROW width of the track is actually in plywood, any scenery between built up in hollow-shell plaster, or sprung up from "door skin" (thin veneer for flush panel doors, hence the name).
