Opening up a Tecumseh Peerless 930 Transaxle that will not shift into gear anymore. It came from the Power Pro lawn tractor, which is one of the 2 tractors i got for free.
Wow! Yeah she looks pretty bad, but I would clean all of that grease out of there first. Then look at everything. Use some old gas and a brush to really get all of that old grease out. Then see where you are at with rust. I agree with the wire brush for cleaning that shaft. Just make sure to wear safety goggles as the wires from the brush like to fly out at random.
thanks for leavin a comment brotha, matter of fact i just got a bench grinder a few months back with a wire wheel, and noticed thoes little wires just love to fly off randomly. i cant imagine getting one stuck in my eye, thats a straight up hospital visit!! anyways thanks for watching, ill probley make a video when im done. so check back
I need to get one of those grinders. We had one at work and they are invaluable for cleaning stuff. I've never had those wires in my eye, but I've gotten one in my forehead once. that day sucked, haha. Can't wait to see more. Thanks for the reply.
I just tore down and reinstalled my peerless on my old Murray 18 horse. One of the shift keys somehow became binded and twisted. Tractor got stuck in reverse while clearing snow My god what a nightmare that evening was. I have it all back together and I replaced the grease and such, but I'll be converting it to fluid filled soon. When I am ready to tear it down again.
Hi I saen that you subbed me so I subbed you. I would clean it with gas and wire brush the rusty parts and it should work again......make sure those little balls stay in there place
stp oil treatment ... liquid grease... fill below the split in case or it leaks out the axles all over the wheels... gear oil does... STP is too thick to leak out but coats gears well
How often I actually need to service this gearbox? I have one that was standing for ten years and I know that the original grease from 1992 is in their...and i don’t know if I need to service it...
From the factory 930 peerless transaxles came with 30 oz of bentonite grease. Other than the water and rust its normal. The ball bearing is part of the shifter mechanism. Should be a spring somewhere also. Looks like you are missing the shift keys to allow the trans to shift (common wear item). I would clean it out, remove the rust, check, clean the bearing surfaces, reassemble with new keys, axle seals and bentonite grease and away you go.
