i've got one locked up (gear shifter doesnt want to move) soooo..i'll be looking inside//i rebuilt one years ago when I inherited my Dad's old Murray built Craftsman. He was meticulous about cleaning his machine..unfortunately that included hosing it off....the shift folks were rusted to nothing from water intrusion. I think these things would probably work forever assuming there are no leaks (loss of lubricating oil) or unless someone washes them...they are not sealed well enough to wash them down...advice wash the front end of your mower...leave the back end alone except for air blowing off debris...

3:03 look closely at the input shaft support. Theres enough room to install a grease fitting between the needle bearings and still be able to access it. I did that on mine to try and get a little more life from it.

Thank you. A parts diagram I came up with indicates a "retaining ring" on the countershaft between the first and second gears. Are you aware or did you notice this part on your machine? Don't see one on mine (MST 206-502a is what i have). Thanks

Getting the differential together and back in is very difficult. Did you find there was some trick or secret maneuver to it? The Tecumseh manual says to assemble outside the unit but that is near impossible as well. Thanks

I think i did edit out some bad language and several failed attempts..lol. But i did assemble it and slowly worked it back in the case. It was a slight pain.

I wanted to give you an update I put my case back together last week and used the 85/90 gear lube I really sealed it good with RTV I put grease on the axle where it rides on the support inside the case I got it all back together and set it aside so I can get back on the restoration of the mower I went and looked the other day and it started dripping out gear lube out the right rear seal oh crap ! So today I tore it back apart and went to town I got some STP and I am going to try that I hope this works I spent hours cleaning out all that old grease I really dont want to go back to grease . I put the lube even with the bottom of the case like you said but I see your lube is bellow the case looks to be about and inch your case and my spicer look identical and the gears . I am going to try the stp and let it set over night and put it in the mower leaking or not I have 5 acres of weeds we had so much water and snow this year its bad . But just a heads up the seals will not hold the gear lube in
@vatolocal2564
@vatolocal2564 Год назад
I che ked mine right after i mowed sunday and i cut steep ditches also..no leaks. Got me to thinking about the seals and if i applied sealant and may forgot to mention it in video. Video shows me wipping them down and no sealant...maybe yours are not tight enough around shaft or loose in case...thatll be the only way they can leak that i can see. I must of made the judgement call not replace them in mine if i thought they were tight enough.

I do want to mention, that in the teardown video (i had to look at it cause i didnt remember) around the 31 minute mark it shows it originally had gear lube in it and the unit wasnt really leaking. Maybe i just got lucky..lol.

@@vatolocal2564 I did not know that I thought peeless was packed with grease also it looks idenitcal to my spicer . I got everything cleaned back up and dumped about two bottles of STP in it but this time I left the level bellow the edge about 1/2 inch I put it back together last night I am going to try and get the mower back together if it doesn rain and snow again the weather has really sucked cant get anything done. I got the rest of the mower serviced except the engine its ready for the trans my drive belt came in Sat . I got the deck all rebuilt . I dont ever remember brakes on it I just ordered new brake pads and the return spring I remember it gone didnt know it went on the cam I got that ordered too. I hope this restoration pays off the mower is going to get its ass kicked when I hit 5 acres of 4 foot weeds . I hope this STP works if it leaks I am just going to go ahead and use it I am not packing grease back in there . Wish me luck thanks

@@vatolocal2564 My seals are just rubber washers I would say more of a dust boot than a oil seal I broke one last night and got out my gasket cutter and my biggest cutter was not big enough I took a trip to town went to a place called Cal Ranch they have a really good sellecton of bolts washers and bushing etc they did have some rubber washers but nothing close. I went over to Homo depot I saw some video some dude made a cutter out of pipe I thought maybe a copper coupler or some condunit I could make a cutter but I could not find anything even close for make a cutter , By then I was getting tired and I knew I needed to get the trans back together so the sealer would hardend I came home and put the old broken seal back in and silicoln around it and just sealed it real good I had broke off a bold in the center of the case but let it go the first time I sealed it but it was leaking oil when I pulled the pulley off . So I heated it up and got the broken bolt out and went down and got another bold so now I have all the bolts in and STP and new sealant fingers crossed I am just ging to run it even if it leaks I have to get this jungle cut down I cant have the mower down for any longer thanks

@@vatolocal2564 I can't even find which shift keys these take, and they make about 8 different ones.. I did find a chart that shows images and measurements though so could match them up.. mine after sitting overnight grabbed either 3rd or 4th, tad fast for mowing when tight corners but made it work, trying to avoid pulling mine apart.. each of the copies of manuals that cover multiple axles have real poor images attached, just enough to know what they refer to, no details what so ever.. I would buy a Chilton style book if they had better images.. then Peerless bought out by Husqvarna and then they dropping the axle division, tough to find stuff... my other mower has a single speed with variable pulley that was slipping so switched to this dump score mower, guess can buy belts for other one as since a single speed if it works in any gear at any speed, it is either a pulley or a belt.. thanks for looking...

@@vatolocal2564 I am now just putting it back together and washing and cleaning all the gears and shafts . Lucklly I got the mower about15 years ago from the original owner that bought it back in 94 and he had all the paper work and the owners manual and it has a complete parts break down of all the parts inside the trans man its been a God send. Did you just put gear lube level with the bottom of the case then bolt it back together or did you add more than that ? If so I will have to drill a hole in the top and put in a rubber plug . I got some Motor Craft synthetic left over from rebuilding the diff in my crown should I use that or just standard gear lube good. How much should use? Should I put in a plug and fill it or level on the bottom of the case ? Thanks for your help

@clutchcolton Месяц назад
Unfortunately you'll still have to split the transmission case apart to get to the seal at the brake rotor. All the seals are the same diameter thankfully. How sad that one has to reclean the mating surfaces each and every time just to replace a little rubber gasket?!

In mine it was full of thick grease I put gear lube in it but it is coming out that brake shaft a little. Been thinking about putting some red & tacky grease in it I know the name is red & ?? it's not half as thick of the stuff that was in mine. I've still not used it yet it got put on the back burner. Hope to get back on it soon good luck.

I think i posted the manual and it should say. I personally used good ole 85w90 with good success but another gentalman says it leaked by his seals. So..id really make sure your axle seals are tight in the case and on the axles..and no scaring on the axles where they meet the seals.

@@endall6783 Bentonite grease is what they come packed with, you could get some of that if you want to, but it's pretty expensive & hard to justify, however lucas red & tacky will work just fine, that's what I'm about to pack my spicer 4360 with.

not a bad idea for maintenance after many years, the grease dries and collects to the sides away from the bevel and pinion gears causing failure. that and the fact that grease does break down over time.
@vatolocal2564
@vatolocal2564 7 месяцев назад
Correct...well, same theory on my side..grease if dried or not enough heat, will not get where it needs to be which will cause failure. Spec calls for 80w90 on mine but move to 10w40 years ago due to winter use and never had a failure..just make sure it has axle seals..lol.

I would use gloves....before dabbing in oil... I was curious.... Maybe you know... I like the Peerless transmission...based upon just watching video and like your instructions.. I see these transmission transaxle for sell ...I think cheap like at Nebraska Surplus... I am interested in using parts for motorized bikes... Can this transmission be shifted from say 2 to 3 to 4 gear while moving? Or is the design or correct operation to be bring mover to stop...have engine idle..the select a gear. So one would start in like 4th gear...slip clutch...and then mow sort of fast... Thanks
@vatolocal2564
@vatolocal2564 Год назад
The correct answer is to slip clutch. But....if you are steady state on a lawn tractor with a peerless, you can shift your weight forward real fast, which breifly takes pressure off gearset, then snatch next gear :) Been doing this for 40 years and never hurt one. Now, on something other application where you want a quicker shift, it may not work...unless you have a seperate clutch like a drag mower :)
@fredmitchel1236
@fredmitchel1236 Год назад
Right on. Thanks very much for your explanation... I thought...like you said...i think...if you don't need to bang the gears.....take your time and if they are unloaded...as engine coasts down...clutchengageded..then an up shift seems quite possible...... Now I have some hope for a new creation... Kind regards Fred

Few things 1. No mention of how much oil. 2. At the end of the video when he points to his wedding ring and says he made a mistake. The mistake wasn't scratching your ring. All real men have scratched up wedding rings cuz they work with their hands. The mistake was marrying somebody who cares. 3. Last but not least. Wearing Crocs in the shop. When you first took it apart it was full of grease you cleaned it up and while putting back together you replace the grease with/ ENGINE OIL which was WRONG you should have PACKED IT W/ GREASE OR 80 weight differential lube, YOU DON’T PUT ENGINE OIL IN TRANSMISSIONS OR DIFFERENTIAL YOU USE A MUCH THICKER WEIGHT LUBRICANT FOR EQUIPMENT THAT HAS( GEARS OR TEETH)
@vatolocal2564
@vatolocal2564 7 месяцев назад
If you watch the teardown video, it had gear oil originally equipted from the factory. I chose 10w40 because i wanted it thinner for cold shifting (winter use) and if Honda puts 10w30 in their 5speeds (I own one) i believe from years of experience, it will be fine. Thank you for your comment.
