Man thank you so much for posting all of these in depth videos. Keep it up, anyone who plans on rebuilding one of these can use all of this.

I just finished watching a video on rebuilding a spindle by Robrenz. Those bottom bearings need to have a preload and those definitely don't. The X is a lineup mark look at the top bearing the X should line up

Hey nice vid just to let you know that the -4 is -4 micron runout at the etch circle or sign depending on the brand. If you wanted to tweak your assembly runout you can clock your bearings on the shaft. Nice vid again 👌🏽👌🏽

my boss purchased a brand new vf3 in 95 the motor only lasted a year, and was way out of spec. Haas said it was from the graphite dust from electrodes of the edm. apparently cutting graphite was in the selling contract, so haas replaced all the parts. needless to say we never really cut graphite with it after that... :) if you end up putting a kit together for the vf-3 ill be happy to order it.... Thanks again for all the videos!!

Because the spacer ring between the bottom bearings was loose, it potentially had some wear. These are precision ground to give just the right amount of preload. Anyway, hopefully it wasn't worn and your repair lasted. Thanks for the video.
@kinzy_fabrications
@kinzy_fabrications 10 месяцев назад
Hi The inner and outer bearing spacers are away being re ground now to make sure they are matched heights so the new bearings will have the correct preload When grinding them they also have to make sure the face are perpendicular to the bore so everything compress down evenly not cocked or that can also induce a bend in the spindle Hopefully in a week or so time depending I will be ready to put it back in the machine Thanks Marc

Excellent investigation work. Angular contact bearings are a matched pair. Think I sold some of these a while ago as a job lot. If I'd still got them, you could've had them, which is a pity. As others say Robrenz spindle rebuild video is excellent

I find it odd that there would be so much "material" in that spindle as they are a somewhat sealed unit. Almost looks like that collar was rusting and flaking. Maybe it was heated too much during the last 'repair' which will cause rust if not treated. ? 1 of my B.P. spindles was "rebuilt" with off the shelf bearings. Nothing $500 and an hour or so couldn't fix but, it's a B.P. , NOT a Haas CNC. I'm fortunate that my '91 VF-1 still sounds good and runs true. I cut a LOT of cast iron on it the last 12 years. I do have an odd VFD issue I've been chasing though. The spindle will stop and restart in the middle of a program whithout any warning. I'm confident the VFD is powering down & back up as I've caught it doing so twice now. I just don't know where to go from there. All connections are good.
@kinzy_fabrications
@kinzy_fabrications Год назад
Hi Move never heard of that sort of vfd issue but these old machines can do some strange things at this age lol Yeah the rusting on the bearing collars is strange! They are not a totally sealed unit so it’s likely it could have been moisture in the air supply to cause the rusting like that I think
@user-tf1oo9rj6u
@user-tf1oo9rj6u 11 месяцев назад
@@kinzy_fabrications Also, were they ever changing their spindle oil? Maybe it slowly absorbed moisture and lost its corrosion preventatives. It seems odd how very much material was in there, like maybe they were running without out air flowing through the spindle? But I would think that would cook it pretty fast.
@davereagan
@davereagan Год назад
Wonderful videos! I thought the orange color of oil/liquid on the bearing balls looked like rust. Is there any chance there was water condensation from the compressed air/oil feed? It's hard to comprehend that much grit getting in from the bottom against the flow of air/oil purge.
@kinzy_fabrications
@kinzy_fabrications Год назад
Hi Yes after looking at it further id say there was definetly was water/moisture ingress issue. hopefuly when i finally get round to rebuilding it i should never have that issue as i have a very good air dryer on my own system Thanks Marc

how much do you charge for that ? we just got quoted 10.000 euro for replacing the spindle bearing on a 2003 VF2.. ..basically more than the machine is worth.. HAAS wanted to replace all of the spindle for about 25k euro .lol..
@kinzy_fabrications
@kinzy_fabrications 8 месяцев назад
Hi On this machine which is a 1998 vf3 the total cost for me to complete the spindle rebuild came to approx €1300 That included new bearings, straightening the bent spindle which I done by heating it too much! Having the taper re ground and news seals etc That does not include my time spent to do it which without filming etc is approx 1.5days including removal and refitting But some of the newer spindles might be different to mine so I can’t comment on yours but if you have the time and are semi confident I’d say why not have a go like I have My advise would be make up some good press tools etc to remove the shrink fit parts rather than the heat like I did and caused damage I have just done another spindle and made up some very basic tooling and removed everything without heat this time Thanks Marc

@davidfarmer
@davidfarmer Год назад
is the machine actually setup to blow oil air through? you should check that, if the bearings were starved of oil i can see them wear out quickly. early machines came from the factory with grease pack spindles. If you look at the lube panel the air oil configuration will have an oil line feeding into some fittings with a solenoid and an extra air regulator.
@kinzy_fabrications
@kinzy_fabrications Год назад
Hi Yeah it is definitely an air oil mist machine and has the separate air oil mist line and metering unit on the back as per my other Haas I’ve had

You'd think the positive air pressure would not let the iron dust in so maybe it failed at some point@@kinzy_fabrications
@kinzy_fabrications
@kinzy_fabrications 11 месяцев назад
The air pressure is low but should stop ingress but i think it actually may be more due to water in the air that caused the issue and not cast iron debris like i initally thought

@weldmachine
@weldmachine Год назад
Hey Marc. Good to see you decided to disassemble the Spindle yourself. I'm sure it must have been killing you to know what was happening inside. The Float you see in the Bearings is obviously because of wear. But, it's the design of Spindle Bearings that will cause this end float. Spindle Bearings are always Angular Contact Bearings. Any wear will Always show up as end float, unlike Roller Bearings which will show wear as side float. Rebuilding the Spindle yourself is possible IF you have the time available. As you already know now. Cast Iron is one of the worst materials to machine, especially with a CNC machine, the environment inside these shops is the worst environment for any CNC machine.
@kinzy_fabrications
@kinzy_fabrications Год назад
Hi mate Yeah seems the bearings have just worn heavily and on top of the cast iron the machine was working in it was all drilling and tapping work so loads of high load stuff that probably wore the bearings even quicker

I am really surprised that these Giant CNC spindles have no gears inside them Where does the torque come from to cut steel?
@kinzy_fabrications
@kinzy_fabrications 11 месяцев назад
Hi The spindle is belt driven off of a 2 speed gearbox, thats where it gets the torque from, the direct drive machines get the torque control from the vector drive and wye delta switching
