Oh! And the way walks through the house touching things. It's like he's trying to see if he can feel something other than his crushing sorrow.

I kind of interpreted it as searching for any lingering pieces of "her" or maybe reminiscing of the times spent there with "her", but I like this perspective too

Oh yeah! That works. I see it, or, since grief is multi-faceted, a heady mix of it all.

The sharp breaks made me feel the breaking heart. Of course, he has never done anything I don't love. I believe that the best arrangement he has done is God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen. I know it isn't Christmas yet.....

This was the first song that brought me to Geoff and Voiceplay! And I mean how could you not dive head first down that rabbit hole! I fell in love with his voice in 20 seconds flat!

I got to meet Bill Withers when I was very young. He was incredibly kind to me-I had no idea who he was, which made him laugh. Weeks later I saw him on TV performing Lean On Me. Headsmack moment, since I had heard the song, just didn’t make the connection with the performer. I really love this one by Geoff-first off I think it’s a terrific homage to Bill Withers, and second, I love hearing him sing in his higher register. He has obviously worked hard to keep his voice that velvety all the way to the top end. As for the post-production cut-offs, I think that’s a stylistic thing-somebody tell me if I’m wrong but isn’t it dubstep? Voiceplay does it quite a bit-I think usually it’s more of a Layne arrangement thing, but Geoff and Layne have similar inclinations at times. Great reaction!

When he hits the pose at the kitchen window like the one Jack Lemmon did at the living room window in the movie, I thought I was just going to curl up and die. Oh, Bill Withers was inspired to write this after having seen Days of Wine and Roses.

Geoff hits all the feelings in this. His acting skills are getting better. Always look for the gramophone it's Geoff's logo. It shows up in many of his videos.

I think that was the best analysis of this song I’ve heard. Thank you so much. I can’t wait for you to hear the next one from Voiceplay. You’re going to have a field day capturing everything that Layne did.

This needs to be sung in a smokey bar with one guitar, drinks on the table and lonely people joining in...

Geoff is amazingly capable of conveying sorrow in a most haunting way. I love how he is so respectful of each artist's vision when he does a cover, while still being able to make the song his own. Every performance of Geoff's is a master class. Thanks for the video. Have a lovely week.

First heard this song Bill Withers who was opening for Blood Sweat and Tears. So I was thrilled when Geoff did this. Geoff never seemed to notice the sunshine coming in the windows. Sounds like you've been around horses! Another beauty not reacted to often is Geoff's version of Till Then - a WW2 song done from the perspective of a soldier going off to war asking his love to wait - Till Then. And a good VoicePlay one is Running Up That Hill (Kate Bush/Stranger Things).

Your talking about the abyss - My husband of 48 yrs died 7 yrs ago after a 10 yr battle with stage 4 colon cancer. The last yr was when I started losing that battle, that I was going to be alone. I asked if I could go with him and he said "No. You still have stuff to do. When it's your turn I'll be there to show you all the cool stuff." It took a solid 5 yrs to get myself back to me and the emjoyment of this world. Of course, your description of that emptiness conjured up a few tears. But at least I know I'm through the worst of it all, and I'll look forward to seeing him again one day.

One of my favourites by Geoff 🤩👍🏻 So much emotion... amazing job he has done with this song 🫶🏻

The polar opposite of this, emotionally, is Way Down, where Geoff covers Elvis and JD Sumner. We get to see a side of Geoff we don't often see. 😊 As with most Geoff and VP videos, watch with captions on, and keep going until the Patreon credits roll. Both ANS and WD, I think show the influence Cesar -- who exhibits flamboyant joie de vivre -- is having on the more staid VoicePlay guys. Geoff has been letting loose with more emotion and acting since Cesar joined VP, and I love watching his growth as a performer.

Geoff is so very specific in every nuance. I love when knowledgeable folks point out so many details that I've overlooked. Thanks for the depth and quality of your analysis.

I like the original but I think Geoff made the tone match the lyrics in a way the original doesn't

Great reaction!! Geoff is soo good!! For another emotional tug - check out VP Creep - it will bring tears!! For a fun Geoff check out Monster Mash or Way Down [in that each Geoff has a different name tag!] Loving your reactions!

Tanks for getting to this one. Great reaction and analysis. I didn’t like the cut notes on the first few hearings either, but as I listened more they came to be very meaningful. Just like the woodblock hit, they form part of the form of the arrangement like a punctuation. What they actually represent is only the in mind of Geoff, but to me they are indicating a different sort of glitch in the fabric of emotion… like the looping “I know”s are a glitch of getting stuck mentally/emotionally. Edit, as you went on to talk about at length 😅

I always love your insights for the techniques of singing. Your explanations of the emotions of this song is the best. Great stuff. If I may make a couple of suggestions for other Geoff songs, ‘Blackbird’ (one of the first videos he made) and ‘Shenandoah’ his wife,Kathy asked him to do it, I think it’s his prettiest song. Thank you for doing these. Stay safe and stay well. 😎🤙🏻✌🏻🤟🏻🖖🏻

Geoff Castellucci cover of Man of Constant Sorrow next? It's quite different, but also quite a jam lol.

I always felt that the origina, was too boppy for the subject matter. Geoff brings angst to the song. He's so much more than a singer. I think you might be misremembering the original as it's actually no slower than Geoff.'s version, actually slightly quicker.

Interesting! I just played Bill's version and agree. This happened to another reactor on Folsom Prison Blues -- he was criticizing Geoff for picking up the pace, and then had to revise his comment after listening to the Cash version he was referencing. No fault to anyone, but we tend to remember things emotionally, not objectively
