That iconic drum hit is just as dramatic in the original, but for corn's sake, it's Layne! He is not human!!! He is the ultimate sound effect machine. This version is so absolutely awesome! Thanks for checking it out!

I'm so delighted that some highly trained and talented reactors are paying attention to VoicePlay. There are so many avenues to explore with this group. There's continual astonishment about so many of their pieces. Thank you once again for highlighting so many goodies here.

that whole air of mystery and intrigue also perfectly match the lyrical content of the song.

What VoicePlay actually does with teaching/rehearsing their performances seems unusual to me. The arranger (Layne in this case) actually sings each part into a separate track. Each member gets both their own track, and the combined version. It allows them to learn it both by listening, and by practicing with the combined version, with their part in one ear and the rest of the group in the other. Of course, they write their own vocal riffs and frills, and those are vetted with the arranger. What's craziest to me is that all three arrangers, Layne, Geoff and Eli - have ranges wide enough to basically pull it off. (I think Eli's lowest is said to be an A1). J None has said that it's "easy," only takes him a couple of hours to learn his parts. And that stuns me too!!)

I liked how you kept highlighting the charisma of each member and the group as a whole. You're so right. VoicePlay has got me hooked -- these guys know their art and how to go for the jugular. Really fantastic song and I'm so glad to have your reaction to it!

This is a stunning cover of Phil Collins done in concert. The way VoicePlay followed the Collins line that started just as quietly. He just walked across the upper stage down the stairs, stopped on stage, softly sang and then wandered up the far side steps, eventually stopped at his drum Again VoicePlay didn't put the pedal to the metal until near the end. Layne's dad bought that car new in 72 and loaned it to them for this. I liked that J None was wearing a jacket that is reminiscing of Miami Vice who used this song. Liked the 80s glitches in the video. It was incredibly great year starting withI I Can't Make You Love Me (Bonnie Raitt), In My Room (Beach Boys), Nothing Else Matters (Metallica), Valhalla Calling (Miracle of Sound), In the Air Tonight (Phil Collins), Seven Nation Army (White Stripes), Creep (Radiohead) - just one superb video after another. Not to mention Drunken Sailer! What a way to go.

They're so good at building tension throughout until the climax, then bringing it right down again to finish. They do it a lot. It takes someone very special to belong to VoicePlay. When Tony Wakim left in 2017 it took them two years to find a replacement in J.None. Just being a good singer isn't enough, they need so much more, to fit in perfectly. They were so lucky to find Cesar so quickly when J left. People keep asking when they will bring in a fifth member, but they aren't rushing into it. We don't know whether J intends to come back for one thing, so in the meantime there is a huge range of guests to draw on. I guess it's what you suggest: VoicePlay is so much more than the sum of its parts. It's a kind of magic....

Loved your reaction and analysis- thanks! They filmed this video in the back parking lot of the Oviedo Mall, back door and loading dock area where their PattyCake Productions studio is located just outside of Orlando Florida. The car belongs to Layne's dad who has had the car since it was new. Very hot, buggy, summer night in Florida with no AC; just fans blowing on them outside.

In the description for each Voiceplay video, down towards the bottom, they describe themselves as a QUINTET, even tho they actually have been a quartet since Earl left (when he left it was Geoff, Layne, J. And Eli, right? And then J. Left and they added Cesar, so still four members). I want to think that’s code for “J.None is for sure coming back to us-and we’re KEEPING Cesar!” LOL. Great reaction!

I think the guttural beatboxing, as you call it, very well simulates the sound of the electronic drum pads used in the original.

Right around 4:40 into the song, that look on Geoff's face, and the sounds that come from him, added to that faint air of menace that runs through the whole thing, Sweet Man, if Geoff looked at me, like he looked at the camera, in truth, I'd have crapped razor blades. No lie. Payback is a heartbeat away.

This video took some dedication. Hot Florida night being eaten by bugs. Filming behind the Oviedo Mall where PattyCake Productions is located. Lighting electrical problems and the fog machine had hiccups. They nailed the 1980s Miami Vice feel. J. Dressed like Crochet.

Okay, you need to watch them do Tennessee Whiskey. It's older, Earl is still there, Cesar is not. If you loved the runs in this one.... just wait. And the one they will drop in a week or so. You will need a seat belt at the very east.

I really loved your emphasis on how the song 'grows'. I kind of feel that the softer beginning really fits the song's title. "In the Air" - almost atmospheric - works especially well with their choice to add the fog, as if it begins muted or hushed a bit. VoicePlay members are not just musically talented/creative, but I am also highly impressed with their visual creativity. And I say that as someone who worked as an Art Director in advertising for most of my working life. I'm not even positive whether the fog clears a bit when they let loose or whether it just feels that way to me because of the difference in the music having 'grown' and especially Eli & Cesar cutting loose. I think this might be my favorite Analysis of yours. You explained much of what they were doing that led me to the emotions their cover insists I feel, but which I did not previously understand.

Great reaction and analysis!! I absolutely loved VoicePlay's version of this song. As you mentioned they took time to slowly build up to climax, not rushing at all and introduce more elements and intricacies into this song. Everyone got some chances to shine, and each verse they gave you different surprises. To me this is one of their best arrangements. Thank you for taking your time to analyze this.

This video always gave me vibes of someone challenged J to a street fight (or sing off in thid case) and thr rest of rhe crew shows up to back him up. There is a reason this song is my go-to recommendation for newcomers to VoicePlay. Everyone has their moments to flex, but no one person dominates the song as a whole.

That gentle bass tone from Geoff that you were praising near the end can be heard all through his solo rendition of Until Then. It's beautiful! edit: Now that I think about it, I think the song's name is just 'Til Then.

How much does one need to donate to request a song? I'd like to put one in for Voiceplay, either "Golden Hour" or "Sleeping In The Cold Below." Huh, and I don't see where I can do it on this screen. Oh, and this one is so awesome! Sometimes I like VP's covers more then the original, but having grown up with Phil Collins's version, I'll have to say, it's very very close with this one. VP just edges ahead, as I tend to prefer multi-voice singing (with some exceptions). Layne kills the beats in this one, and we get to hear his sweet, sweet voice, we have Cesar bringing the SASS as no one but he can, we have Rock God Eli full of passion, J. None bringing in the oh-so-smooth soul, and Geoff in a sleeveless jack....er, I mean Geoff with his gently wafting hai...dang it! (I can DO this!) Geoff laying that bass so thick and dark and just a bit rough, like dark chocolate bark! LOL, I kid, but that doesn't mean I'm wrong! We will forever be grateful that Kathy cut the arms off that denim jacket! 💙

I confess I was just a little hesitant to watch this reaction, because I had just watched your analysis/reaction to Geoff's 'Ain't No Sunshine', and since you said you really disliked some of the electronic manipulation of the vocals in that one, I was afraid you wouldn't like this one. It probably helps that, as one their patrons, I have heard them all do some incredible things with their voices with them just singing live without any manipulation. So, while I appreciate there has been some electronic help to achieve the exact sound they end up with in their more complex videos, they all have an incredible talent to mimic those sounds without it. I have long since made peace with the fact that some reactors just don't like 'theatrics', so VoicePlay will never be their cup of tea. I have a much harder time with reactors who seem to vehemently dislike the fact that the various members usually are given their own place to shine in their arrangements. I guess they just want a 'solid wall of harmonization' throughout, but I think that would be a waste with VoicePlay. When you've got these individuals who have incredible and distinctive voices who can still blend together so seamlessly, why not take advantage and enjoy both?

I find it necessary, not just in music but in life generally, to be honest. Regardless of whatever our opinions are, if we're right or wrong, if our stance goes against public opinion or the societal status quo, we can only view and interpret the world through our own unique lens and experience. While that contributes to our uniqueness as individuals, it's also a part of my own worldview. I genuinely dislike lying or being dishonest because I don't believe we can better ourselves through lies. That said, if there are elements about something I may dislike, it doesn't mean I don't like the piece as a whole. I actually find it rare to love something completely without some kind of criticism. My opinions, like many others, change over time as well. I can be vacillate in my opinions or just reconsider my stance on a topic or idea if I expose myself to it enough and internalize my stance differently. In Geoff's case, regardless of some personal musical choices, I enjoy his timbre, musicianship, theatrics, vocal diversity, and more. My channel name has stories in it because I love storytelling and theatrics. xD Ultimately, though, having a few criticisms of someone doesn't mean I dislike what I hear, but the opposite. The goal is to provide outside honest perspective to better the artist him/ herself and to help push the boundaries of what they're presently capable of. I believe if we hold ourselves and each other accountable, we can make great strides not just in society but in our personal lives as well =)
