The whistle cracks (breaks) she did earlier in her career added a level intensity that no other singer can replicate to this day.

14:40 is such a smart and unexpected transition! Most singers would let the instrumentation do all the work there, but Mariah uses a perfectly timed and placed run and risks ruining everything if she doesn't get it exactly right LIVE. I just can't with her ear, courage and choices! Mariah Carey's throat is truly blessed, but her brain is what really sets her apart.

Mariah taught me to riff honestly. I love that you delve deeper than other professional reviewers. I think in addition to vowel modification the secret (at least what works for me) is MINIMAL vocal cord closure, developing a fast vibrato and to treat every tick of vibrato as staccato on a specific vowel (in my mind). Teachers should do what you do and really stress AEIOU as one continuum that's interchangeable.

I absolutely adore how you go into into so many aspects of her singing and how you draw from your experience, while still giving singing tips along the way. Could I suggest a clip of hers for you to react? I remember watching this live on tv as a kid. I recorded it and watched it over and over again. I still love how at the end of the song when Mariah sings the last "joy", you finally get a glimpse of how exhausting the performance must have been. So incredible.

I love your explanation of vowel modification. I have a background in opera myself, but I now specialise in Musical Theatre...one thing that drove me crazy during my classical/opera training days was the teachers who would have their students modify every vowel pretty much to an Ah, rendering words unrecognizable. I always teach that we open/modify when we need to, but resolve to the proper vowel because we have to preserve the text. If the audience doesn't understand the words, there's no point in singing them...just hum or ooh or something! No other instrument has lyrics, so composers could much more easily just give us a melody with no text. The text is there for a reason. Let us hear it!

I completely agree! I'm a huge advocate for diction and delivery of the text. Moments like these (when Mariah re-modified the vowel back to the true vowel of the word) makes me so happy! And some people forget, singing in English isn't easy at all! It's so easy to get lazy with the words (especially in music today) and it drives me crazy. It takes effort to enunciate all of the vowels and consonants. But when that effort is put in, the result is so satisfying. Love love your comment!

@@jessicasopranonotes Yes! English is brutal. SO many diphtongs. I can't even tell you how many times a student has been struggling with a note, and we fixed it simply by changing the vowel/placement. Always start with the vowel!
