Slowing down when you speak is actually a very good advice and practice, I find, for my anxiety. It also allows me to appear more deliberate and confident. When I try to say everything in mind, it doesn't give give my words "currency" because no one can tell what is important and what is just a passing thought. It is so hard to do. I just realized this and am practicing and being more cognizant of my words.

@@HalfShelli Well their accent changes every few miles, so when they sort out which one of thier versions is the "right" one, then maybe they'll have a leg to stand on when it comes to diction, lol.... 'neutral US' english (like what you see in US movies and television) is, for the most part, the most consistent and correct pronunciations. Granted US neutral does say Aluminum instead of aluminium, but other than that it is basically textbook pronunciation.

You had me laughing out loud at 2.12 -- not at you, but remembering when I would be doing these very exercises in the car, alone at 4am, on my way to present my early-morning radio program. As you'd know, I couldn't drink coffee before going on air because it tightens the vocal cords, so I'd drive along, uncaffeinated, making all sorts of funny noises and faces. One morning at the traffic lights, I look to the side and there's a rather elderly gentleman, doing the same thing and nodding to me, with a great smile on his face. He wound down his window and called out, "I'm a singer too!". Now, I can't sing, but those exercises did help with going on air at 5am! Thanks for the memory and the giggle (and for all your wonderful videos) 💐

In case Audrey doesn't answer, maybe this will help. When I was younger if I spoke naturally, no one could hear me; but when I tried speaking louder, it would feel like I was straining. After doing choir and cheer (where you have to yell healthily for hours), I noticed this: speaking from your stomach instead of from your throat can add a lot of volume to your speaking voice. It feels weird at first but really helps to project without straining your voice

"Gee Wiz" is correct. But I am a Speech-Language pathologist which is different. We treat a variety of disorders across the lifespan but most commonly: in children we treat speech sound articulation (like saying R words) and language disorders. And in adults, we treat medical disorders like swallowing problems and cognitive (attention, memory, etc). We also treat articulation in adults, like if their lips are drooping on one side from a stroke. I personally work in a hospital and mostly treat swallowing problems.

@leahlang7454

Increased breath support helps us get louder and shorter phrases (taking a breath where you might normally just pause) so you don't have excess strain at the end of your sentences. Hydration. Try to find a quieter part of the venue/room if you can. You put strain on your vocal folds when you have to speak over noise and you get drowned out if you aren't louder than the background noise.
