Following up my previous case study on a 1999 Honda Accord • How to identify a bad ... , I discuss in detail the operation of a Honda PGM-FI main relay with my class at Rosedale Tech. We get to go into detail about design characteristics, relay operation and control, and some unique features in this relay that might be difficult to understand. Once you watch and understand this material, you’ll have no problem diagnosing these relays and related circuits!
Engine Performance Diagnostics chapter 15
Topics discussed
- identifying the two distinct relays inside the PGM-FI relay, and the circuits they feed
- understanding the control and load side of both separate relays
- correctly dissecting and coloring a wiring diagram for diagnostic purposes
- understanding why relays are used in electrical system designs
- applying Chapter 3 principles to identify relay control circuits
- the cranking circuit bypass, and why this feature was included in the relay
- which solder joint failed in my previous case study video, and what caused it to fail

I just wanted to let you know how amazed I am at how fluently you are able to explain everything, I sat through both the CO2 sensor and the Main relay explanation and even the fast idle issue and even when you are learning while you're teaching you manage to explain it very detailed. I've learned a little something from all your videos and I support you on all your teachings and hope to enjoy more of them. I would love to hear a seminar or any classes you teach would be interesting.

@@ScannerDanner Sir, please abit of clarification from your end. Thanks. 1. will both the 2 input positive wires to the fuel pump relay will go live permanently as long as engine is RUNNING or only the input positive of the PRIME circuit will turn off while engine is RUNNING??? 2. How the prime circuit behaves when engine is RUNNING?? Is it off or on while RUNNING engine? 3. How the 2 currents behaves when they met at the 86 pin of the relay?? Will additional current will flow to the relay at the same time when engine is at START AS WELL AS RUNNING SIMULTANEOUSLY??

These videos are giving me quite a bit of ammo with my dealer. My relatively low-mileage '99 Accord Coupe V6 has been having starting trouble for over 2 years. I originally had intermittent starts. First my dealer replaced the battery cables and starter, telling me there were "two items both contributing to the issue," which didn't fix it. $800 and completely unnecessary (according to car-savvy co-workers). So then they "replaced" (or more likely just repaired the solder joints on) the PGM-FI at no charge, telling me then "well, actually THREE issues all contributing to the same problem." This resolved the intermittent starts, but I continued to have long crank times with weak, hesitant starts. Now they've replaced my fuel pump, after promising me that by leaving the car with them for 3 days they'd have it fully diagnosed and resolved (telling me it would either be the $750 fuel pump or a $250 "fishtail"; I paid $666 for the pump after 10% off coupon)... and I still have the same problem. $1,500 in unnecessary repairs. Near the end of your video, I wondered if the problem is with the FLR computer-controlled ground. Of course, I can't find anything about what they are calling a "fishtail" that might explain the drop in fuel pressure they said the car has. Hell, maybe it's just a 15-year old gas cap I can replace for $10! Anyway, I've enjoyed both videos related to the subject. Keep up the good work!

Paul, thank you for taking the time to splice this information together. You answered your own question at 29:05 about the engineer's rationale, for employing a series resistor in the hold in circuit. More electrical pressure: more current across a fixed resistance (coil) HEAT/COMPONENT longevity. Addressing all you younger technicians watching this, I want to reiterate the importance of knowing what is occurring in the circuit that you are troubleshooting. I have seen Honda and Acura dealership technicians that don't understand the workings of this circuit. You cannot throw parts at problems and expect your customers to continue bringing you their business. I encourage you to watch as many of Paul's videos as possible. You need to clearly understand what results you should be getting as you go through personal troubleshooting regimine. Thanks again Paul, this is well done overview.

Talking about the diodes...in the diagram the bottom one protects the computer against connecting the battery the wrong way, the middle one protects against defeating the immobiliser circuit and the top one prevents the second circuit at fuse 13 being active all the time, second circuit is probably a start relay to remove non essential electrical consumption during cranking. Great video channel, many thanks.

Q; at 24:23 why? So the part will fail and for it to be such a uncommon part you would have to take it to the dealer for work. Love this video. I’m learning a lot!!! My neighbor was a Honda mechanic for over 30 years and he told me that the engineers have designed parts to fail so that the car would be brought back to the dealership. It’s just what he told me👍🏻

The why... this relay's coil is important to work at a lower cranking voltage (~8v) and expected to last when car runs at ~13-14v. Coil designed to work reliably at 8v would have tough time living at 14v because of excessive operating heat. Designed to maximize life of this component. First video of yours I have commented on. Find all you videos extremely interesting (i am in industrial controls). You have a very good teaching ability and style. Thank you for your effort.

ScannerDanner, this video has helped me out a lot. When I turn my car to the ON position first thing in the morning, my ECU does not turn on. But if I wait about 5 minutes with the key still in the ON position all of a sudden it comes on because I hear my fuel pump and the LEDs on my Hondata S300 chip come on. Anytime after that first 5 minute wait and it comes on like a charm every other time, until I let it sit overnight. So I am thinking my ECU isn't getting any power when I first try to start the car. I've already gone through the hell of replacing the distributor, the ECU plugs, the fuel pump, the main relay. We even tried my ECU in another civic and it worked fine. So like I said I believe my ECU just isn't getting power in the beginning and something is warming up for 5 minutes before it finally sends power to my ECU. Tomorrow I will finally know send I have a test light hooked to it and also wired in a "T" shaped power source to both IGP1 and IGP2 to a switch that only gets power when in the ON position. If my ECU doesn't get power in the morning when I first turn the car to the ON position then I will flip the switch for my own power source and see if she works. If she does come on and works fine does anyone have any suggestions for the right sized Fuse to put in my "moded" power line to my ECU just in case I ever have a voltage spike? Last thing I wanna do is fry my ECU. Or do you have a suggestion on where my stock power source might be having the issue? And also could you post or send me the pic or a pic of the diagram you used for this video?

This is the best explanation that I've found, for a very complex topic. I was looking for a typical diagnostic pattern, but depending on which connection is bad, presentation may vary. I'm surprised this doesn't happen often with other manufacturers -- solder joints are everywhere.
@ScannerDanner
@ScannerDanner 11 лет назад
Resistance does affect voltage. An increase in resistance will always decrease current flow. (ohms law). However an increase in resistance can cause a voltage rise (thermistor circuits for example) or a voltage drop depending on how many resistors are in the circuit and where you are measuring.

Your comment/question about the purpose of the F/I relay's diode can be explained by coils depicted in the diagram. The lower one has more windings than the F/P coil. The circuit is interupted in bias flow...this is a engineered CEMF supression feature, indirectly isolating the F/P coil. Why does Honda/Acura place both the F/I and the F/P relay in one housing, instead of using a couple of bosch relays? Part of the reason is stated above...the other aspect is that they sell copious quantities of this item. Honda does not recognize the solder and go method. Flat rate dealership techs figured out the issue was in the board long ago, and they would run their own "parts exchange programs",out of their bottom tool box drawer, by soldering the contact points. The problem is that, cold solder joints are a common issue in electronic components...especially after a repair (see your previous video for a good example the difficulties of attempting a solder job with an all purpose iron). All in all, the best practice is to replace the component as a unit. I have seen too many customers lose faith in their repair shop, when the vehicle is back on the hook a month later, with the same issues. The same is true for DRL relays... Thanks again for your time, in laying out these circuits. Your topics are always thought provoking.

Would the purpose of the diode also be to prevent voltage from the collapsing field of the coil from going to the computer when power is switched off?
@SpiderWebUntangled

Heavy resistor is there to: 3W, 42-Ohm. Reasons: reduce relay heat buildup, reduce current, reduce transistor stress. Diodes are probable reason: Prevents ECU damage during accidental reversing of the battery cables.
@kolt46
@kolt46 11 лет назад
Reason for resistor..... Relay coil designed for lower voltage of battery at cranking or rest. Then when engine starts, alternator is able to provide higher system voltage, hence the need for a resistor to cut back current when at higher voltage. Sort of same concept of the ballast resistor in the old conventional ignition systems. To compensate for a lower battery voltage during cranking.

Strange question here. A friend of mine has a 98 Accord. He has had issues with it dying randomly while driving. He had to hold the key in the start position to keep it running. I replaced the ignition switch thinking that was the problem. The battery was dead, after the battery had charged, the start would engage with the key in the off position. I made sure the switch was in the off position as well, and it will still crank on its own. Have you seen this before?

The resistor might be there to reduce PCM transistor current and therefore the heat. The lower (on picture) relay is as important as the upper one (if it releases the contacts due to low voltage, car will also not start). So it can`t be for extra starting insurance. It also can`t be for reliability for the coil...lower relay has coil with direct battery power and if it fails, car will not run....and these relays will be changed in service together anyway. There diodes... maybe some kind of electrical circuit interference counter-mesure?

I was told that the reason for the power reducing resistor's is that they have to design the the lowest current draw system when the car is in the run state to reduce the loading on the alternator so to improve mpg and emissions. I'm not sure as to what extent this helps the cause.
@kevinjarrells4385

maybe full system voltage is required to close the relay and only a fraction is required to hold the solenoid in. thereby reducing the load on the coil prolonging its life expectancy?

You mention "wake up signal" which turns the fuel pump on for 1 or 2 seconds. At the same time the Check Engine Light (CEL) reflects that by turning on and off. Once the check engine turns off the car is then able to start. What is going on in the Main Relay and the ECU when the Check Engine Light (CEL) remains on for more than 2 seconds. If the CEL does not turn off you are unable to turn start the car. Some Honda owners have reported waiting up to 15 minutes for the CEL to turn off to then finally being able to start their cars. Is the problem with the ECU or is the problem with the Main Relay? Can poor grounds, a bad ignition switch, a bad fuel pump, also affect the signal that tells the CEL to turn on and off? I have a 1994 Honda Civic LX thats driving us crazy. 1. We replaced the Main Relay but CEL still randomly stays on for more than 2 seconds. We have waited up to 10 minutes before the CEL turns off. We are able to start car after CEL turns off. (Can hear the pump prime just before car starts). 2. The ECU was diagnosed with leaky capacitors. ECU was repaired and we continued to have the same symptoms described above. We cleaned out the ground wiring at the Thermostat Housing (ECU ground). Still same symptoms. We noticed that that the car is more sensitive to rainy and damp days but still acts up under normal weather conditions. Questions: 1. Can a weak or bad fuel pump cause the CEL to remain on. Maybe the pump is so weak that its taking its time to build pressure on the line? Can the ECU or main relay detect fuel pressure? 2. Can a bad distributor, specifically the ignitor or the coil affect the CEL and cause it to stay on for over 2 seconds. Thanks for your channel. You are very clear and informative

LSir, please abit of clarification from your end. Thanks. 1. will both the 2 input positive wires to the fuel pump relay will go live permanently as long as engine is RUNNING or only the input positive of the PRIME circuit will turn off while engine is RUNNING???

1. as long as the ECM is still receiving a crankshaft position sensor signal, the fuel pump circuit will remain "alive" 2. the prime is just the initial key on period, when the ECM "wakes up" and not all cars have it 3. I have to go back and watch to answer this one, sorry

Hey, I know this is an old video but I need help. I was trying to wire in a kill switch in my 2003 Honda Civic because two cars have got stolen from my house in the last month. I wired a switch into the black and white wire going into the main F1 relay. That was the wire I was getting power from. The switch worked however I somehow grounded something out on the frame and suddenly I'm not getting any power to that wire, even if I put the wire back together. I was able to get me and my wife to work today by running a wire straight from the hot terminal of the battery to connect to those two ends of that wire and the car runs but I'm sure that's going to cause damage eventually. How do I find out why that wire no longer has power?

I think IF there is any reason at all to have the resistor we need to look at the computer pulldown circuit to find it. Assuming that both relays on that board are identical (I think they are), then both relay control circuits should have series resistors, yet it is only the fuel pump relay that has one. The very same relay that is being grounded by the PCM. Mr. Paul can you verify if both relays are identical and possibly provide us the markings for IDeing them?

I think the reason the "cranking bypass" has no resistor and the Yellow/blk (key on power) has a resistor and a diode is because when cranking, the blu/org wire (cranking bypass) will have lower voltage to begin with since the starter is pulling most of the power. So after cranking is done the yel/blk will have full voltage and would need a resistor to match what the blu/org puts out during cranking. The diode would be there since there would be voltage fluctuation from the on/off of the starter.

It would be so minuscule in this case that I just don't think that applies here. there are 20 other relays on this car that do not have series resistors in the control circuit. good point though. manufacturers are employing that thought process on todays cars

It is normal for a relay to be hot to touch when it has been energized for a long time, like a fuel pump relay that is constantly energized with the car running

ScannerDanner, I have a question. If it is the case that the lack of a crank signal to the computer will give you no power output to the fuel pump, does that mean that if I don't have power to my fuel pump, it could be a problem in my distributor where the sensor is located? I have this same car and just changed the distributor but now I don't see any power going to the black yellow wire at my fuel pump when I turn the key to on or when I crank it.
@ScannerDanner
@ScannerDanner 8 лет назад
+lineartechbd1600 yes, and I'm not 100% sure if all Honda's will prime the pump on initial key on. But I believe it should, which would lead us away from the distributor inputs. But we cannot completely rule that out yet. Check for injector pulse next. This will verify distributor inputs to the ECM and also ECM function. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-SUxagOAVS5M.html (a very good one for you, it's on a Honda) ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-ZgNY3ZpjSsU.html (i just posted this one and I address your question about distributor inputs)

ScannerDanner I was looking at your video again and in it, it shows several fuses at the top. One fuse was located under the hood ( I thought there was only the one 15amp fuse on the side of the dash). I looked in the fuse box under the hood and saw a burnt out fuse so I replaced it. Now I have power at the pump. I replaced the pump (I keep an emergency pump and distributor in the trunk cause I travel so far from home). That fixed my problem. Thanks for the video cause I would have never realized there was a fuse under the hood.

Another possibility for why.. to provide a voltage drop to prevent this relays coil from draining all this circuits current. This resistor would provide a greater voltage to other components tapped before the resistor. .

im having issues with an 09 CRV injector 3 isnt getting pulse causing a misfire amd a DTC. based off this diagram i would assume the break is between the injector and the junction box as im getting ground to 1 2 and 4 just fine. would this be the correct assessment? im not sure what else to try and check. the original harness to the injectors was destroyed so i put in a new harness.
@ScannerDanner
@ScannerDanner 4 месяца назад
Shut the engine off, and restart it. Do you have injector pulse for a few seconds before it shuts down and stops firing? If you do, you're barking up the wrong tree. Intentional injector shutdown happens when the ECM is protecting the cat from a misfire (ignition or compression issue)
@ulianotech

@@ScannerDanner very interesting. as i do restoration and custom stuff on much older cars whenever i end up helping out a buddy i end up learning something new. just finished watching your class on the topic of intentional shutdown. my first tests in the morning will be to do a resistance test on the injector and then your start/stop test with the noid light plugged in. now if i do find its intentional shutdown would the next step be a compression test of the cylinder?

@@ScannerDannerhello I know why the resistor is placed in series with the coil. It's purpose is to basically LOWER THE AMOUNT OF CURRENT when key is at ON POSITION. That's to Conserve Battery Power. Say, consider only the coil, if the coil resistance is 100 ohm. Then at Key ON say at 12.5V, the coil is constantly ON. Hence, total current is 0.125A. Also, one thing to note is that relay still works perfectly even at 9V. So, at 9V, total current is 0.09A. Now, we add a resistor of 38 Ohm in series with the coil so that approx 3.5V will be dropped across the resistor maintaining the same previous total current of 0.09A throughout the series circuit. In this case, the coil still energized perfectly. Hence, power consumption is reduced and battery is protected from draining. So, with ONLY the coil, the total current under 12.5V is 0.125A. If resistor is added, total current is 0.09A with 9V across the coil. In both cases, the relay is Completely Energized. So, difference of about 0.035A of current which is very very significant difference if key is ON for long hours. Hence, power consumption is maintained. Hope this helps 😊😊😊

with the cranking bypass wire sending 12v through the coil... after cranking it doesn't take 12v to keep the switch closed... only takes 12v to initially close the switch on the relay and a llower voltage will keep the switch closed.... like a ballast.. so to speak
