This film is a gem. The comments stating it as a bad film are made by people without any sensitivity to the possibilities of film, science/speculative fiction or the human condition. It;s seemingly slow pace is too alien for people with shallow empathy & high expectations. The fact that it obviously polarizes people , those who love it & have passionate or intelligent comments, & those that don't & have trite/ shallow comments is the best indication of wherever this film is FOR YOU or NOT.
This film, while using several science fiction themes, is actually meant as a comment on society's technocratic mania which suppresses individualism. This is why the underdog & loser is actually the true hero of the story and becomes the sole survivor. For German standards in 1977, this film was a sophisticated effort by a renowned director, Rainer Erler, who has produced several critical films of the Seventies, and the actors were all top-quality artists like Horst Frank or Uwe Friedrichsen, very popular at the time. And the story-telling speed is just totally normal for the time. If you look at the films of our time now, everything is told too fast in Hollywood blockbusters so you have more time for extended action and special effects sequences, giving you less to think about in the end...
au contraire, its technocracy what fuels fake individualism (human individualism doesnt exist as its a complex social structure) by providing free supper meal to a bunch of selfish assholes and this movie is rather about collaboration in worst case scenario
Just watched the original German version and I liked it a lot. The English version seems to be 21 minutes shorter than the original. One of the main characters is Jürgen Prochnow, who also played the captain in Das Boot. Another actor is Dieter Laser who is best known for his role in The Human Centipede. For a 1977 German TV movie, well done!
Such a rare and difficult to find movie. I saw it on a vhs rental when I was 9 years old. Its such a unique movie, I've never forgotten it though I couldn't remember the title for many years. Unfortunately I've never met anyone in real-life whos ever heard of it, let alone seen it.
18:50 "Our frustration tolerance is ZERO". Wow, I can defo identify with that, WITHOUT having gone to Jupiter and back! 😄 It's like any other day at your typical, shitty humdrum job.
Great job with the egg head gibberish Mr Mixmaster ie DJ, that would be a small joke, (mostly) no offense intended. I’ve seen this before but it had another part to it. A woman on vacation in some (I believe) SA hell hole with strange residents who didn’t seem to want to interact with her except for a creepy little girl and the woman had weird dreams/premonitions about these stranded cosmoastronaughts and this (seemingly) straightforward version makes exactly as much sense as that did but it was far more entertaining because of its weirdness factor. I’m only 45 minutes so the second storyline could still happen but not in the same way I remember it as they were clearly parallel stories and not piggy backed. This is almost unwatchable without the other part and I’m not sticking around for the rest because I have crap to do and this snoozfest will put me in a coma if I continue watching it.
In German (the original language of this movie) ''Ganymed'' is the correct name. I can still remember when I saw it the first time, almost 40 years ago. Americans always think they have to ''improve'' foreign language films by shortening them - 21 minutes in this case. They shouldn't have. To me it seems this company, North American Releasing, didn't have a sufficient budget. Yes, indeed, the movie was slower than we are used to now. And yes indeed German movie companies have smaller budgets. And yes the special effects ****ed. Anyhow i was glad to find and watch this movie in both German and in English versions here on RU-vid, after maybe 30 years. I lost my VCR copy ! By the way, at a certain moment during one of the flashbacks on Ganymede, starting at about 1:12:25, you can see the astronauts staring at Jupiter, rising over the horizon, in all its splendor. That cannot happen, Ganymede is tidally locked to Jupiter. Not sure if they knew this in 1977, the two Voyagers hadn't arrived by that time and I'm even less sure about what the two Pioneers did.
This film grows on you as it goes along, have patience. But it is derived from a Twilight Zone episode ( I wont give it away). also, about 20 minutes are edited out.
mrnobodysprincess I found a longer version in German, it has the extra time, I didnt watch it I just skipped around... The longer version is probably too long and it did need editing?
+mrnobodysprincess Its more like 30 minutes. Some character-development scenes showing the antagonism between Don and the Captain, also some surreal sequences featuring Don's fantasy woman 'Coca-Cola Girl' have been almost completely edited out of the UK version. She appears only as a poster in this version although the actress Vicky Roskilly is still named on the end credits.
"I Shot an Arrow Into the Air" is, I think, the one being referenced. Astronauts don't realize they ship was just off course and they're on Earth, just outside a large desert town.
Interesting is the Space Shuttle drawing at the bigining of its movie, 1977 the NASA Shuttle program was a little secret, also the flag of the European Union an the arm on one crew member.
Plot is slow and bounces around, starts out ok but dies on the vine after 40+ min. They break several survival 101 rules and turn into girl scouts when they arrive back on earth. the lone survivor was responsible for the deaths of his crew mates by leaving Med pack on ship.. there, I just saved you 2 boring hours.
He was told to leave EVERYTHING on board the ship.. including the medkit that now contained the samples of water containing life from the planet. Get it right! Their deaths had nothing to do with the med kit.
Thank you, you saved me 2 hours of my life. I think I will spend it doing something important. Let me see...yea thats the best way to spend my time. Ok guys, keep well, I'm off to masturbate.
The music fails to add to the atmosphere; it almost ruins it. Weird choice, I wonder why they did it? Even silence, and the sound of the wind, would've been better.
Several parts of the original German language version were cut out of this English language version. However the very end, when the last survivor suddenly walks into this third world slum city, is confusing. Did all the crew members die for nothing? They had proof of alien life on Ganymede, and than that proof gets lost at the last moment?
So it's kinda like planet of the apes but without the damn dirty apes. Instead it's a hard sci-fi apocalypse. Really interesting weightlessness effects at the start.
Gordian Bloodstone? You poor thing, you must be so used to feasting your eyes on melodrama & spectacular big budget fodder that you can't appreciate subtly anymore. The fact that you felt compelled to ask the world how long the film lasts via a comment , instead of checking the time on the upload, then mentioned bleeding from the eyes implys that the medication you're on is far too strong. When you escape your drug dependency and become more 'human' again you may well enjoy this film, that explores the human condition & technological dependency. Hope the bleeding has stopped- was it connected to the duration of the film?
I love this kind of movies. Our wishes: -Restoration in 4K -Bring all languages dub’s English,German,Spanish,Italian…in best Quality -A lot’s of Bonus for example an Rainer Erler Docu. -Restoreation Docu. -1500 limited edition -Media Book outlet -GOOD IDEA ???👍😜🍻🎥🎞🎬🥁🥁
Really good movie for hardcore si fi space travel fans .good story done well .but you know it has no monsters bikini girls or car chases so it isn't seem . but it is a good mature movie .
Many they meant to say a manned landing on Jupiter's moon Ganymede. Since it has been assumed since the early 50s that a landing on this gas giant would be impossible.
I think in the 1950s they still did not quite understand what happens below the upper cloud layers of gas giants, that once you get deep enough temperatures and pressure become impossible for life, and that there is no solid surface not far below the upper clouds. James Blish in his first of his ''Cities in Flight'' novels thinks you can place solid objects on the ground on Jupiter, and still recover them quite easily without having to go down 100s or 1000s of miles down. Poul Anderson in his novel ''The long way home'' places an techologically advanced alien civilization at the bottom of an ammonia sea (under great pressure, he got that correct) of a gas giant.
Slow by today's standards. All that for a flip-flop ambiguous ending. Way too much bad judgement. Like was said, bad survival tactics. I can say I've seen it. Spoiler alert. - Stay along the coast. Fresh water streams or rivers will empty into it. Also dig for fresh water above the sea level, etc. No fish/crabs in sea? No ship traffic? Big giveaways there.
Just stop now...go on to the next flick...if you ever thought British films were BORING, you are about to be impressed!! This is the kind of shyte YT should be "guarding" their users from!!!
Read some of the other comments. Many think this movie is boring because they are used to American scifi movies. Keep in mind the German version is almost two hours.
@@Emdee5632 I can understand many people want things quick and fast, but in that sense I´m very different, despite having seen mostly American scifi, when it comes to movies and tv-series. As long as it is not just about empty background, my brain enjoys longer stories and more... how would I say, maybe not slow burning, but long burning story archs, and I usually want to know all the available extra information, subplots etc. That being said, I mostly read scifi and certain fantasy and horror. Maybe 90% of stories I consume are in written format. When Kindle came about, and the physical space the books take was no longer an issue, my scifi-consumption exploded even more than before. Of course it also meant that not everything was to my liking, but most times I´ve got quite good stories, some have been epic. But I bet I´m in the minority with this preference.
It seems as if teh film might have lost something in translation. They didn't land on Jupiter but one of it's moons, like Io. You can see the big orange ball in the sky behind them. I think this is based on the Twilight Zone episode "Where Have All The People Gone". I didn't care for it much. Well done but slow and plodding.
The early character's dubbed English dialogue was a mis-translation. The German dialogue has "...bemannte Landung auf dem Jupitermond Ganymed" ("manned landing on Jupiter's moon Ganymede").
That was the name of a Twilight Zone episode too? I only know the 1974 (or 1973?) full-length movie "Where Have All The People Gone?" (here on RU-vid) and that one was nothing like this one. . .
It seems to have had so much potential at all points ...... “IT” is just about to happen NOW to reveal all!!! Then it ends. !!?? Did I miss something!!?? Where was it!!?? Was there a point!!?? Ahhhh......No. What a waste. I think the disappointment is that it looked like there was going to be a really clever twist revelation to pull to all together that never came. Monster B- movies are more satisfying. Great potential. Worst implementation. Run away - you wont get that time wasted back.
Maybe. maybe not. Even after 40 years when I first saw this movie i'm still uncertain. i think he really entered that third world slum city. Without ANY evidence there is life on Ganymede.....
This is a German movie, so ''Operation Ganymed'' is correct. By the way it's better to watch the original since that one is longer with no scenes edited out. When I first saw this TV movie, maybe 40 years ago, I did not quite understand its ending. At least I could not quite remember it . The scenes on Ganymede were mesmerizing and critical for the entire movie. What a shame : all those ships and crewmembers are lost and they can't contact Earth, because ground control thinks they are all dead anyway.. The last survivor carries with him a canister that contains evidence for life on Ganymede. But he loses it not long before he finally stumbles into a Mexican slum. The ending was.... sort of what I could remember , not so great. This movie reminds me of another not well known movie , Europa Report. A spacecraft lands on Jupiter's moon Europa, the crew discovers intelligent life, but they all die. At least they DO manage to report Earth there's life on Europa.
So Movie is 1977, so this would have been the first time anyone had seen the space shuttle as the first mission was in 1981. (55 seconds into the movie, I'll watch the rest)
no - the space shuttle has been around in various forms since the 1960s. check out the opening for the six million dollar man tv show that was a real proto space shuttle (1973-78).
@@meesalikeu I did watch it back then. It didn't do very well did it? I remember my dad getting me out of bed well early in the mornings for all the moon landings too.
@@meesalikeu It was one of the so called X planes (can't remember the number). He was a test pilot of a small ''lifting body'' X-plane experimenting with a possible shape of what finally would become the space shuttle.
This is one of those movies that would get me really frustrated as a kid back in the 70's. I loved every thing that had to do with space, but the psychedelic turns and schemes of the times ruined it for me. It still does. Interesting movie nevertheless.
The movie is called Operation Ganymede (the biggest moon of Jupiter, and of the solar system), not Operation Jupiter. Gravity at Ganymede's surface is about 1/7th of Earth's gravity. I guess they didn't quite know how to show that in the movie if you watch how they move around their car, when visiting the crater lake :-) :-)
It's more like Planet of the Apes , without the apes ! Sorry , but unless you have absolutely nothing at all to do for the next couple of hours , you're still better off pondering the life expectancy of a fly . Good Luck , proceed with the understanding that if you watch the entire movie , you'll hate yourself for doing so .
This movie has its charms, but it is very slow. The atmosphere is similar to other Scifi movies from the area. I personally find the constant bickering and fighting between the characters quite annoying, it is like a primary school class on a day out. I would struggle to recommend this movie, it is just too slow and the story is a string of stereotypes.
Sorry, bad special efectes. Hower the astronauts on the Jupiter moon are drunk, I don't believe they would let them take alcohol in to space, it would be deadly. Kkkkkkkkkkkkkk, nice movie, look, make me crie. Kkkk
