In this video I cover the important changes to the RH rotation small block Chevrolet marine engines from 1996 till the end of GM production in 2021. For years the RH rotation engines used timing gears instead of a chain. This allowed the usage of the same exact distributor gear in both LH and RH rotation engines. GM ceased production of RH engines in 1992. In 1996 with the introduction of the Votec engine two marine engine manufactures for sure converted LH engines to RH engines in their own facilites. Pleasurecraft (Crusader) and Marine Power were the two that I'm familiar with that converted LH engines to RH in house. They used a special roller cam, a timing chain unlike the older engines that utiized timing gears, and this setup required a different distributor gear. Even the 1987-1992 RH rotation small block engines used a hydraulic flat tappet cam and the LH or automotive rotation engines used a hydrualic roller cam. I also talk about the differene in the crankshaft reluctor for the RH rottion engine if you have an EFI engine. This is important and I'm sure down the road this will get mixed up.
The RH rotation hydraulic roller camshaft is Crusader part number RA050022 which originally fit 305 and 350 1996 till the end of production. 14097395 LH is the scribed number on the cam. This hydraulic roller grind is also used on the 383 truck and Ramjet 350 GM Performance Parts crate engines.
The 14097395 LH and RH cam specs are listed below:
The duration at lash point in degrees (intake/exhaust) is 288/308; duration at .050" tappet lift (intake/exhaust) is 196/206 and maximum lift with 1.5:1 rocker ratio (intake/exhaust) is 431/451. Valve lash is zero/zero and lobe centerline is 109 degrees.
The RH rotation cam is the above 14097395 GM grind on the LH core and uses the LH camshaft rotation distributor gear.
The RH crankshaft ruluctor is RA056001A and you utilize the "rounded" homeade slot.

Yup! No bull either!! I have twin 350ci small blocks 5.7L 270hp in my 30' Tollycraft and found out almost the hard way by trying to be proactive in ordering new distributors, timing gears and chains, etc...found out I have helical timing gears but, long story short..D.U.I. did their homework unlike summit and knew this when they built my new dizzys!!! Thank God!! I learned alot from this channel, this dude is an absolute bad ass, and I thank you Sir!!!!

Thanks for the video , very interesting , I always thought the reverse rotation stuff was always done in the gear case since roller cam introduction , there is nothin like experience .

Glad it was helpful! These are mostly for repower applications as they were specially done by Crusader and Marine Power. The LH rotation engines must have an aluminum transmission such as a Velvet Drive 5000 or a ZF 68 as those transmissions only accept LH rotation engines. These special RH engines you will always find a cast iron Velvet Drive 10-17 or 10-18 transmission behind them.

I had to do this for my Crusader big block 496 roller conversions. Opposite rotation roller cam very hard to find.

Yes. Custom camshaft folks like Bullet can usually come up with pieces like what you needed. The core that it’s ground on is the hard part.

I suppose if someone is doing a rebuild, but their distributor drive is still good, would regrinding be a good idea? If a lobe was flattened, it could be welded up and then reground. Given the hit or miss metallurgy in some cams, maybe this is a good idea. I have a 2010 Mitsubishi Lancer Ralliart, and sometimes the manual is wrong. It calls for 5.1 quarts of oil, but that will overfill it. It needs 4.5 quarts. Also, I had to replace the rear brakes around 60,000 miles. The manual says new discs are .396 inches in thickness. After 60,000 miles, my rear rotors were .404 inches in thickness. I wa stunned, and the guy who machined the at O'Reilly's was stunned. If they didn't need to cut much, my brake discs might still be considered better than new.

After watching your videos and buying the cam, cam gear and parts for my transmissions from you, I have rebuilt both of my velvet drives and replaced the old school carburetor engines with the Vortec so they would be EFI. My project is almost complete, but I've run into a new snag. The water pump!! Where do you get an opposite rotation water pump (circulation pump) for this engine? Please help!!

Marine pumps have a brass bidirectional impeller. A marine supply house can source that for you.

All of the marine pumps apparently are short gen 1 type. But i found a solution. Flowkolerpumps makes a votec non directional CNC pump. Its expensive but it fixes the problem. Their part number is 1974 1996-2014.

Thanks for the video! Where can I find a replacement distributor for my 2007 Marine Power 5.7 Reverse Rotation engine. I believe you can not just switch the helical gear on the distribuitor because of the upward force on the distributor shaft? Parts are so hard to find, might as well be a unicorn.

I’ve had to do just that. Replace the gear on a regular distributor. Reach out to Marine Power as they sell parts as well.

​@WJsLifeonaBoat The info I was looking for was to do a mechanical advance on 88 270s. Left Lucy is always the problem child. Most people got lost with gear drive and reverse rotation cam.

Can you explain Installing the cam.. Gears and timing chain Vortec RH Rotation 5.7 i.e. # 6 TDC with the Bottom Gear Timing mark at 12:00 and top gear Timing Mark at 6:00 is this correct? Thanks in advance

That’s correct. .#6 is on TDC compression stroke when the dots on the gears/chain are lined up.

This video was a great help. I am Currently changing a 5.7 vortec from LH to RH. I have a new timing cover, but it has the LH rotation cam seal. Can I replace The seal or do they make the plastic cover with the RH rotation seal? I haven't found any information on this.

Fel-pro makes a reverse rotation front seal for small blocks. I suggest to buy that and install it into that cover.

I assume you have an EFI engine? If so they are hard to come by.

Not that I’m aware of. The LH rotation had the same as the truck did. It’s plastic and the thrust is different as it’s pushing up into the distributor. That’s why the housing was aluminum and not plastic along with a roller bearing under the rotor. I suppose you could get the LH or automotive distributor and swap the gear. That may not be simple as GM distributors are usually .491 shaft size. I e had to cobble a couple together already against my will, but with no other source I had no choice.
