Best video yet. I never leave the store without checking the scope out. I also rarely if ever buy a scope online unless its something I already know or a replacement. If a store wont let you handle or look through a scope...walk away.

Academy sports and outdoors in Webster Texas actually has scopes mounted to these blue dummy rifles. The blue plastic barrels are cut off it’s like just a stock with the plastic action mold it into the thing. However the scopes are bound to them so you can actually shoulder the thing and look through the scope. I thought that was absolutely amazing that they would do that.

I think a key step in being able to peer through a scope is comfort level. You adjust a diopter until the reticle is sharp. Because when you are shooting, you will put your aiming point on target but your eye should focus on the reticle, not the target. I think once a person gets beyond the SFP low or fixed power scope, they are going to want more features. I also can't help but notice that, to a large extent, you get what you pay for. Now, there are a number of brands where you are paying for a brand name. Other brands with the same quality and a smaller price tag can be just as good. A scope does not have to be the most expensive to be the best or, more accurately, the best for you and your shooting needs. And it is okay to be a newbie or not now a lot or enough. Tell people what you want. You want to hunt but you might get into competition shooting. What kind? ELD? Or three gun? That value of this series of videos is that a newbie might not know where to start or what to buy. Therefore, start here, at least to know what questions to ask. Do you need zero stop? Many might say yes, at all times. Does the scope lose range of adjustment having that zero stop? What kind of gas was used in purging the glass? It helps to prevent fogging in temperature extremes. Is it okay to have a super duper fancy scope that weighs a pound and a half on your whitetail deer hunting rifle? Sure. Why not? There is some public hunting land in my state where the literature for it states that you can expect to make 200 yard shots, at the least. So, you need a scope that loves long distance.

This is a helpful guide. I've usually found that one I've tried to shoot it at critter and I had a scope with adjustable parallax getting everything dialed on and ready for various ranges didn't work out well for me. Whatever range I set it up for wouldn't be the range where the pest would appear. And by the time I fixed it the opportunity was gone. Granted the ones that I had regular access to are not the best in the market, and would seem rather dated now. In general I think I prefer simplicity. If I were verminting like you do you're set up certainly makes a lot of sense. A snapshots that unknown distances really don't give a lot of time.

True; for quick shots I've often been out of parallax. Didn't matter; I nailed the animals anyway.

A very big help thank you for this because I got burned by Pinty about one of their ar red dots this junk had no eye relief at all but the youtube hype made it seem great 😔

You were interested in my 2 cents or 16 pieces of eight. I don't have distance shooting abilities here. There's a 300 yard range about an hour away with a 5 year waiting list. After 3 years of waiting they said it was still 5 years. And our local police drive 2 1/2 hours to a 200 yard range to train. So for me turret options and reticle features aren't relevant. Point Blank Range and Plex meet my needs. Now I'm dealing with lens based astigmatism and that drops some sighting systems from the running. Reflex is out and I usually can shoot better with irons or Skinner than 2 or 4x scopes. So I'm pretty much a 3 to 9 buyer with fixed parallax. My testing requirements for red dots and scopes fall in to two tests. I look at lettering in the store with 90 angles like an E to see if I'm getting a clear square imagine on my retina. Then I look outside and see which scope gives the best color/contrast to my eye. For rimfire what's working best for me is the Nikon P-TACTICAL Rimfire. For my AR (DDM4v11 S2W) I have Burris AR‑536, AR‑1X plus AR‑Tripler, and a RT‑15 3‑15x50mm in the event I ever get that range membership. What I'm buying for now is a Ruger GP100 and Ruger Mark II both with Weigand rails. I'm really leaning towards a Burris Handgun Scope 2-7x32mm. The reason is I'd only need one. I could run the scope on the Mark II during hunting season for small game and switch it to the GP100 for deer since all other hunting closes that week. Also have a Traditions muzzleloader scope on my crossbow, but that's anther story.
@SocialRegressive
@SocialRegressive 3 года назад
You found some really nice options. Burris makes some lovely glass, and I sure wish Nikon was still in the game. You make a great point about simple reticles and an astigmatism.

As much as I appreciate this series of videos, I think it’s pretty much convinced me to stay with iron sights. There are so many variables to scopes, even for those meant for similar purposes, that it seems you would need a bench full to choose from depending on what you plan to do that day. I’m not that rich and never will be. I shot accurately at 500 yards with iron sights in the Marines, so the much shorter distances I’ll be shooting these days shouldn’t require any more than that. Will I be shooting small groups all the time? Probably not. Will I be hitting the target in a small enough area to be lethal to the target? Probably. And that’s what the purpose is, after all.

I've never seen you demo a vortex or Nikon product. Do you dislike them?

I've demonstrated two Nikons - the Force XR pistol scope and the FX1000 4-6x50mm. Both of them are shockingly good. No Vortex, though. I've tried to get in contact with them, but haven't ever received a reply.

@@SocialRegressive no I don't. I've tried out other peoples and thought they were nice but I didn't spend enough time to form a more nuanced opinion than that. I'm sure but I would love their most expensive LPVO. As near as I can tell that's exactly my laundry list of what I would like. But I have not handled one of those.
