When Roy Orbison does a tribute, that’s some high praise! He was a master. Ricky Nelson was a fantastic entertainer and I believe he was very underrated. The tv series may have launched him, but his talent took him to the top. Love that his twin sons are following in his footsteps. Some great music and wonderful memories!
This is just part of the tribute to Rick Nelson from 1986! There’s another by VH-1 Behind The Music, Rick Nelson & another by radio, Remembering Ricky, where all these guys, some from Sun Records, spoke of their time with Rick! And Rick’s idol, Carl Perkins, is one of them! John Fogerty, Paul McCartney, Producer: John Boyland, former band members: the great guitarist: James Burton, John Beland (The Flying Burrito Brothers) & Randy Meisner (Eagles), Roy Orbison, Jerry Lee Lewis, Gordon Stoker of The Jordanaires, Producer of Sun Records: Sam Phillips, An Arranger: Jimmie Haskell, Producer: Greg McDonald, last friend to see Rick & former band mate & owner of PJ’s Alley, last place where Rick & his band played: Pat Upton, Dave Nelson, Rick’s 4 children, friend & actor, Kent McCord, who played on The Adventures of O & H & more can be found on one or more of these 3 tributes! Great stuff!
@@cynthiaennis3107 - Thank you for sharing this! Great info on an incredible guy. Ricky Nelson remains one of my favorite entertainers. I follow his twin sons as well. Although they have huge shoes to step into, they are wonderful entertainers in their own right. Thanks, again! Appreciate this info!
The entire Nelson family is incredibly talented: writing, producing, directing, humor, musical and athletic gifts! What a contribution to the U.S.! Thanks for all you've developed and shared!
Ricky reminds me of better times...watching, listening to him sing... black and white on Ozzie and Harriet...we'll never have those times again...we've lost our way...
I first saw Ricky Nelson with John Wayne Dean Martin Walter Brennan and Angie Dickinson. I then realised just how good he was and watched him whenever he came on You Tube.
Ricky Nelson really didn't have to sing, that man, I could stare at for hours on end..💞💞💞 Huge crush on this gorgeous man....WOW!!! MY FAVORITE SONG, " TRAVELING MAN"......❤️❤️❤️❤️
Mary Lou wrote by the great Gene Pitney I heard Ricky first And I loved him but later I heard Gene and couldn't believe such a big voice could come out of him. Both gone to sing with the angels God bless Ricky and Gene Rip
The tv show was both a blessing and a curse. Undoubtedly, the exposure gave him a huge advantage, but it forever typecast him as a contrived teen idol. He did have hits in places where the show never aired, UK, Australia, for example, but his success outside the US never came close to what he enjoyed in the US. He was underrated as a true rock-n-roller and never received his due for being one of the first country-rockers. She Belongs to Me, a Dylan cover, was released in late 1969, at least two years ahead of the Eagles.
I just came from listening to a song made for Rick’s fan club after he passed. It was made bu Bill Aken, Long-time friend of Rick’s at the request of Harriet, who was his mother’s best friend! It’s called ‘Gentle Friend’ which is what Bill Aken called him. It was put into a 45 in 1987. It’s a beautiful song. ♥️
Went to a Ricky Nelson concert around 1980 at the Cave in Vancouver Canada. Ricky performed his hit songs he did two or three shows that evening it was nice.He seemed like a nice guy.
RIP Roy @ Ricky. Your music and impact will last forever. Rick passed away 35 years ago tonight. I was on Colorado Blvd, with millions, waiting for the infamous Rose Parade to start. Was taping the Top hits of 85 and then I heard the sad news. He was on the way to a gig, when the plane crashed and ended the career and life of a great entertainer.
How great A legend giving tribute🌹 to another legend singer, they might not among us But their legacy is here, Their songs their voices, LOL Roy Oberson 👍🌹🌹🥰
I love this song, I believe he was very sad when he sang this song. I loved him always, I graduated elementary school 1957 and my sister and I would save our money to go to the record shop and buy a 45 record bring it home, and practice our dance steps, because the girls were dancing with each other, because very few guys wanted to dance, they were too cool!!!
Rick Nelson made my life a better experience. I loved him like another brother. I'm 64 and will be 65 on May 15 2018. I loved all of the music Rick sang and recorded.
The show and marketing were the reason he got the opportunity to "make it." The music business is and has always been about who you know. The world is filled with wonderfully talented people who never get the opportunity to be marketed nationally and around the world. I had the opportunity to see him perform on a couple occasions with the Stone Canyon Band. My thoughts.
All of these famous singers came out when my Mom was a teen. She was so lucky to get to see the birth of their careers but was alive to see their endings also. Her #1 favorite was Elvis. My brother was named after a character in one of Elvis’s film and Mom got to name her youngest brother. You guessed it: Elvis.
Orbison said Ricky knocked his "Running Scared" out of the number one spot with Hello Mary Lou. I don't see how that is possible since according to the Billboard Hot 100 records, Mary Lou only went to #9 (come on Roy, gee whiz). It was the A side, "Travelin' Man," that went to #1. But yes, Mary Lou should have gone to #1 as no one has forgotten that song and they often affiliate the song as a #1 hit for Nelson now. It is sad that only 3-4 Ricky Nelson songs are remembered by the public now, thanks to media marketing in huge part. The first song in general that the public thinks of Ricky Nelson is Hello Mary Lou. People don't know their own rock and roll history and how it evolved...they pretend they do, but it is all a blur to them.. Or it has been rewritten for them by the media. Rick Nelson had many many top 10, top 20 and top 40 hits. At one time he was only 2nd to Elvis in sales. And they have forgotten that he grew up as an actor first and acted on radio and TV and then movies during the music period. The Nelson Family put out a movie in the theaters, "Here Come the Nelsons" BEFORE the TV series. The girls would go nuts for Elvis moving around and singing, but Ricky only had to smile, blink or close his eyes while singing and they would lose it.
People can say he learnt how tonsing on the job an h obviously aint over all as a good a singer as elvis roy cash an many more .. but none of them cud sing certainly songs ricky did half as Good as ricky did .. lonesome town been a good example .. so much emotion in the way ricky does it ..its one of my favourite vocals on any track
It may have been the case that Hello Mary Lou knocked Running Scared out of first place but I had the 45 of Running Scared and didn't have the 45 of Hello Mary Lou.
Yes, you are right. Was Ricky's guitar player in the 50's. Also lived with the Nelson's for two years when he first came to Hollywood. Was Elvis's lead guitar player from 1969 to 1977 when Elvis died. Check out James Burton on the computer. Played with many, many more including John Denver. He is listed as one of the best guitar players ever. This is Ginny (not Larry)
I sympathize with Roy as to how much harder he and others had to work to get a hit, but man, you gotta realize that Rick was as handsome as Elvis and though not quite as good a singer as Elvis he was a very good singer, he could hit the highs and the lows. Yeah, theTV show gave him him a leg up, but he would have been successful without it, if Fabian could get a hit (LOL), the he certainly would have.
