Today's Home Theater Tour from Kansas City features a 7.2.6 JTR system with dual JTR Orbit Shifters! This room is COMPLETELY blacked out with velvet so that when the lights go out, it's nothing but screen and incredible sound! Excuse me, woah! That's horn loaded sub! I taught horns are overkill and way too uncomfortable to near field listening.. I prefer bass reflex only. Not a fan of super long throw sound, especially for near field listening! Short throw will do just fine.

I really enjoyed visiting Bill's theater on the tour! It was the first time I'd been to his room, but I knew two of the guys who helped Bill build it and they said great things about the room. Definitely a room anyone would LOVE to watch their favorite movie in. The acoustic treatments sounded great, everything was dialed in very balanced and to strict reference standards!

Dual Orbit Shifters!!! Dude, you have to do a 10 minute piece on what they sounded like. Was the mid bass slam absolutely insane? How low do they go? I think a LOT of us would love to know these details. There is so little available online on Orbit Shifters. Also, absolutely LOVE the all black! Just such a magnificent room.

Thank you for the suggestion. Unfortunately it doesn’t do much good to do a dedicated video on subwoofers that are discontinued. I thought his subwoofers would extend down to about 32 Hz but Jonathan mentioned he had the older you are left version which extends down even further so I believe around 10 hz in room. Let’s just say myself, Jonathan, Nick and Tony we’re incredibly impressed with their performance. Bass was tight and punchy with music demos and they had no problem completely pressurizing the room during Home Theater demos. At no point did they sound strained or struggling. Just effortless, clean bass.

My opinion might not matter, considering i recently “downgraded” from a dedicated theater setup to more of a next gen gaming room for me and my two sons. But i love quirky rooms. And by quirky, i mean low ceilings, and weird obstacles to overcome. Obviously everybody wants a perfect room, but there’s something comforting about utilizing the space you have and making it work. Love the room bill!

I am astounded that someone would go all the way with a Helmholtz resonator, rather than building 8 subs and doing a DBA. In general I have seen about 70 videos of american HT and not a single one had a DBA or SBA and i really wonder why, because in Germany that's the #1 solution to even bass over all seats.

Really enjoying the new format for these tours. The discussions give great insight on what gives each of these rooms their individuality. Here’s one thing I wouldn’t mind on the next tour. For the most part, we all know the demo worthy scenes from movies to make a system shine. But there is so much music that is enjoyed on our systems, and such a wide variety of tastes, I think it would be cool to ask each home owner to give one song that they love listening to on their system and linking it for all of us here. I know you did that with the couple a few videos back. I thought it would be cool to find and experience music that we may never come across on our own.

I also had black velvet all around the room up to MLP and I eventually took most o fit out. Reason: Black Velvet absorbs all the high frequencies. Makes room dead. If someone likes dead sound then I guess that's ok but in my case, I didn't like what it did to the sound in my completely sealed/dedicated HT room. I now have Black Velvet only 2 feet on left/rigth/ceiling from screen and rest is used to treat sound. Difference from before to now .... HUGEEEE. My room completely disappears and sounds much larger than it is 12x21x8 thx to the combination of diffusers/some absorbers. Now, when I had whole room covered with black velvet, image had more pop and yes its best for visuals. Now with 2 feet extending from screen still does very well but of course not as good as velvet all around. But I realized that I care about sound equally if not more than video and therefore went with only 2 feet around the screen on side walls and ceiling. My floor is still completely covered with black velvet all the way up to MLP.

Another great tour! My suggestion for future tours is to capture the "in the room" feeling a bit more. I like that you ask for the room dimensions, and it would be nice to get the accurate screen size, distance to eye balls in center of each row - and then capture video snippets from center seats in each row. These tours SO make me want to build my own dedicated space!

Bill seems like a really nice dude. One update I'd suggest is maybe getting some different subs instead of the orbit shifters. Orbit Shifters roll off well before 20Hz, so he's missing a big part of the bass. They're great for live sound or most music, but I think a pair of RS2s would be a better choice in there. Or maybe some Captivators if he wanted to go ported, but if he's a sound quality guy (probably get a lot of flak for this) then just go sealed.

Hi Michael, this is the 1st video I've seen on Orbit Shifters by JTR, would of been good to hear you impressions from them compared to the RS2 / Captivator 4000 ULF.
@Youthman
@Youthman 2 года назад
Unfortunately it's difficult to compare speakers, subwoofer and electronics when they are in two different rooms, two different setups and experienced in two different times. Best way would be to take measurements of each of them in the same room, connected to the same gear etc so you could see exactly how each compare. The Orbit Shifters + Crowsons provided an INCREDIBLE experience in Bill's setup.
@RickyG512
@RickyG512 2 года назад
@@Youthman true, I agree, but it also would of been insightful to know why he chose the Orbit Shifter over the RS2 / Cap 4000 ULF, I'm very curious because those other subs would dig way more deeper

@FOH3663
@FOH3663 2 года назад
@@RickyG512 A key element here is the modest volumetric size of the space. Orbit Shifters operating with the reciprocal pressure vessel gain... extending the system's -3dB point nicely. That makes this an appealing choice for sure. The acoustically adjacent boundaries... relative to the mouth, complement the operation via extending the path length that the driver sees. Plus, mid-field distanced horn loaded bass, possesses a subjective characteristic that is fffnnn superb. Low distortion, low compression within the operating band.

How is he doing Auro with speakers in the ceiling? From what I know from here in Germany it’s impossible to do Auro3D with ceiling mounted speakers. Based on the interview Daily Hi-Fi did with Wilfred the compromise is height speakers at 30 degrees. Awesome HT and video. I’m curious as to how his system with electronic masking works with all these new movies with multiple aspect ratios.
@Youthman

Did you watch the video? Go back to 13:58 and you will see he has 118HT speakers mounted on the ceiling, not your standard "in-ceiling" speakers. They are the smaller discontinued version of the JTR 110HT-SL shown here - www.jtrspeakers.com/new-index.

@@FOH3663 Hey, thanks for your reply. I take it you're Bill, from above video? Looking over at JTR's webpage I can only find the Orbit Shifter Pro - is that the one you're using, because they look a bit different here. There was the Orbit Shifter LFU at one point with a lower knee, but sadly they seem to have been discontinued. I find it's interesting you're using front loaded horn subs, because I myself favor the sound of horn sub variants to the more typically used direct radiating alternatives.
