Writing interesting melodies and textures can be enhanced greatly by using counterpoint and voice leading. In this video, I give an insight into why this works and give some examples from a new track I'm writing!

With all the technology that we have available nowadays, the possibilities to create realistic-sounding orchestral mock-ups from home are virtually endless. In a new series, I take you through some hacks I use in my virtual orchestrations, in my efforts to make them sound exactly the way I want them to. These are meant to serve as an inspiration for you to come up with your own hacks, to create your own unique sound.

Hi Tom, thanks for this introduction and inside view. CSS sure is a great library, have fun with it. I'm curious to hear the end result of this piece which sounds amazing already. Happy composing and take care ;-)

Hey Tom, Goede video!

So basically nobody write counterpoints fast? It's hard process where you have to take plenty of tries right?

I'd say so, yes. It's a process of trial and error

Thanks for your comment! I am aware that I am not following the rules of traditional species counterpoint. The intent of this video was to showcase the advantages of having multiple lines working together to create a texture that is more 'alive', let's say, compared to static chords with a melody. I composed those different lines by following what sounded good to my ears, instead of the rules. I do not mean to say that the rules of traditional species counterpoint are not valuable or that you shouldn't study them (on the contrary!), they just go beyond the extent of this video. I hope that shines a light on your concern :)
