Had the chance to take out a friend onto the ocean for some salmon fishing. He had never caught a salmon before, but he's been trying for a long time. Ocean conditions were great to launch off Pacific City and get out after some ocean coho. We are still learning kayak fishing as well, so it was great to get out and get onto some fish. Hope you enjoy the video.

Couple of nice chrome cohos. They fight pretty good out in open water. Good day for you guys.

Making it look easy out there! Kayaking the ocean freaks me out but I finally took my first trip out last week with an old angling kayak. Tied a milk crate and some makeshift safety lines. Bungee the crab pot and stuff for rock fishing around the Newport jetty area. Was considering venturing farther out when a crab pirate poached mine and others pots, then deliberately full speed swiped my kayak from behind with his zodiac and split. I refused to let him ruin my day, still caught a fish and some crab but man... as if ocean kayak fishing wasn't hard enough

That sucks. People are jerks. Almost makes you think you might want to carry out there just in case

I want to do this soooo bad, I just get freaked out by deep water and small craft. I used to surf at PC and up and down the coast, but would always get spooked when sitting in the lineup and a seal or something would swim under and all I'd see is a dark shadow... Gotta get over that...

It’s easy to feel tiny out there! It’s fun and exciting and intimidating at the same time. Good luck if you decide to get out there.

I have a paddle kayak and I would like try your fishing rigging set up. How does the paddle kayak person let out the rig (sinker, flasher, lure) into water without getting tangles? Would be hard trying to paddle and let line out at the same time like the person in Hobie pedal kayak. Thanks
@NorthwestOpenSeason
@NorthwestOpenSeason 2 года назад
Jtouneh- I believe he’s paddling a few strokes then pulling a few pulls of line out, then repeating until he’s at the depth he wants. Good luck out there!

How many FOW are you fishing when you picked up your coho? How far out do you think you were from the rock? 1 mile? I ventured past the rock and did a full loop in search for a salmon but figured I shouldn’t get too far away because I was solo.
@NorthwestOpenSeason
@NorthwestOpenSeason 2 года назад
Aaron Sullivan I picked up my coho on the way back in from about 250’. I was probably in the 150-200’ range. We went out to about 2 miles from shore and then started to head back in as the wind picked up. Definitely want to be very cautious if you’re by yourself. Not a great idea, but I’ve taken trips on my own too. Be careful out there and good luck!

Hey I’ve been doing a lot of coho fishing at buoy 10 in my old town pdl 106 haven’t had luck yet I’m gonna try this spot this year I only fish incoming tides there what about here ? When do I get out when do I know it’s safe and what do you usually use for bait what’s ur rig?
@NorthwestOpenSeason
@NorthwestOpenSeason 2 года назад
You can fish any tide in the ocean. I use magicseaweed.com for my swell forecast. There are some great videos on RU-vid that describe how to read safe swell forecast. I recommend looking at those. You can join kayak groups that are also a great resource. NWKA is a great one in Oregon. There are also groups on Facebook and elsewhere. You’ll also need a dry suit or wet suit for fishing the ocean and other safety gear.

@@ivan_pavlenko23 check odfw site for the season dates, it changes every year. But it’s usually early summer time
