ClutterBug is it possible to be some sort of butterfly - ladybug hybrid?? I Hate cluttered surfaces but i also dont put things away and if i do i forget about them (most of the time) and gosh i despise clear bins! Im a shover i definitely dont want to see the chaos in that bin! But i also cant do lids because then for sure things wont ever make it in that bin! Lol Or am i just a weird ladybug?! Im confuses now!

ClutterBug I need your help. I live in a rectangle with no dividing walls, a window or door on all the walls, and I can't even set my furniture up in a way that makes me happy. I'm so embarrassed by it. I'm a butterfly and a mess. I have a mini house in here (a kitchen area, an office area, a living room, and a bedroom) and I'm not sure how to blend all the spaces together. I don't like to separate the spaces with a fake wall, I like an open concept. I guess my question would be related to how to organize the big pieces as a butterfly. Or where to even start. Thank you, I would appreciate any help. I love your videos.

What is the secret to making command hooks work? Every one I have hung, just falls off eventually. It's not just at home, but also my dorm when I had one and even at the office. My whole family is cursed with this too.

I thinking I am a hybrid too, I know that I am a butterfly but I also thinking I'm either a bee too. I can't ever seem to get my coat into the closet. But I also crochet and I find myself looking at yarn storage that has all the yarn out where you can see it and I am also project oriented where I have to have each project with everything that goes with that project. I can't stand when my husband takes everything and hides or shoves it somewhere when company comes because I end up tearing up the house looking for it. It drives me nuts!! But he can't stand everything being out. OK I have a questing, how can I get the man to use the bins so that he will stop shoving my stuff and hiding it from me? Yes, I know that I am a mess and a total reck.

as a bee who grew up in a house where my moms lady bug organization style ran things, you are spot on when you said that visual organizers hold more personal attachment to our items and thats why we need to see them . my mom never meant to upset me by telling me to hide all of my things under cabinets growing up but it would really upset me as a kiddo and I never knew how to articulate it. As an adult I have realized it was because to me it felt like she was telling me to hide parts of myself, not just things. like she was saying my personality, likes, and interests were not important enough to be seen. obviously this was not true, in her eyes she was just asking me to remove clutter by having me put all my carefully separated piles of paints, colored pencils, paper, and pens I had laid out along the edge of my room in the one large tote she had under the sink cabinet labeled art stuff. But I could not understand her reasoning as a kid, and she could not get mine.

I'm a cricket and ideally I would like everything behind closed doors. I have a bee side of me though that wants everything beautiful and visually detailed when I open those doors! To me its like putting jewelry in a jewelry box. When I open it I want to see jewels:)

It's like I have ADD, i'll start something and it's like "oh, look, a squirrel!" and i'll have 5 things started going simultaneously and none will get done. I'm definitely a butterfly, things put away are out of my life, lost forever. thank you for your help here.

Summary for me: 1) Use clear container - even better - label 2) shelves system (but require more dusting and care when I choose to display things 3) take off closet doors (so that I can see everything) 4) hooks are bestfriend (put near the front door) 5) always purge (bees & butterflies) when u have too many things your brain cannot appreciate the important things, u will feel everything is invisible. Be ruthless 6) purge tips: close eyes/turn around, let family help you purge. Let it go.

I have always felt like I was a mess and something was wrong with me because all my family and friends were coming to my home or room when I lived at home and would say how do you live like this? I would cry everytime. After getting your first book, I realized I was just different then they were on how I think of things and how I organize. So I had everyone take the test and then I had them read about their bug and then asked them to read mine so they could understand why I am the way I am. This has helped. Thank you.

Me too. I have actually cried! I have relatives that seem to think they are so perfect, they can't not freak out and complain when they come to my house. I finally quit letting anyone in. And it's not like I'm a hoarder or anything. I have health issues that are hard to live with. Have five rescue cats. And an older mobile home that has issues. It's gotten so my question is no longer, "how can I clean and get organized.' It's, "How can I deal with the minimalists in my life without losing my sanity?" And without seriously desiring to slap them. Which I would not do. But ya know, a butterfly can dream.

Even though this was 5 years ago you just helped us resolve at least a few issues in our home. I found two unused baskets (hubby says I am a container collector) took one into the master bath and loaded it with the items I use every day. Everything else (yes counter was cluttered) is going to find a new home. Instantly felt so much better. Hubby was impressed. Then I took the other basket and loaded it with the spices we use every day. Hubby does all the cooking and he NEVER puts things back. But he thinks he could at least throw them in the basket which would make it easier for me to put back in the cabinet. Baby steps!

This makes so much sense. I am a butterfly who has bee tendencies. I have two large bedroom closets neatly organized but I go months never opening the doors. I live out of my laundry hamper and chair for “wear again” clothes. For some reason I never thought this was odd. My family has always called me lazy. I am not lazy. Look at my beautiful, micro organized closet - that I never use. I am in my sixties. I love my stuff. I am a Virgo. I love to organize. I think my problem is I organize in a way I can never use that stuff effectively again. I forget I have it. I repurchase tee shirts that live in my laundry hamper where I handle them and therefore wear them. Gosh - time to rethink my organization systems.

Same. As soon as I finished the quiz, I was like, yeah this will definitely work for my ADHD self. Because my whole thing is if I can't see it, it doesn't exist. I need things to be easy to grab and access or I will never use them. I just moved to a new living situation and find the lack of hooks disturbing because when I lived alone that's what I would do with my keys and my purse and my jacket if I was wearing one. Three hooks right by the door so I never forget to grab them.

I think the rainbow organization method for hanging clothes is also really helpful for butterflies, because the end result is simple and beautiful. I enjoy opening my closet to a facsimile of a rainbow gradient. I do it twice so there's a section for longer and shorter clothing.

I make room in my front closet for guests coats (especially in winter)-for some guests this works--for others not so much. Next time, I'll add an over-the-door multi-hook on a door I keep closed, so my butterfly and bee friends can hang their stuff where they can still see it, but cricket and lady bug friends can still use hangers in front closet.

I am so glad I found you ( and Dawn, the Minimal Mom) You are both so encouraging and real! I am a Butterfly and am so relieved to learn that I am not hopeless, just organize differently! I have read and watched Marie Kondo and found nothing sparked joy. Now I realize that everything I have is because I got joy from it so it all sparks joy! 😄 I am trying to embrace The Gentle Art of Swedish Death Cleaning as I am getting older and am moving to a smaller house. My mother’s words regarding the immense amount of accumulations she had, “I’m leaving it for you girls to deal with.” still echo in my mind! It’s sure not easy and is only rarely fun, but I’m on a mission and plan to survive and thrive! Thank-you, again for being such a bright part of it all!

This makes so much sense! Back when i lived in a dorm in uni, my roommates always got upset with me for leaving the kitchen cabinets and closets open when i was done (my mom still does until this day)! I felt horrible and very disorganized as you said, but now it makes perfect sense why I never close(d) anything! I am also an artist, so when i (finally) deside to organize my supplies and put them in boxes, i don't touch them for weeks or even months - and this has been my biggest hobby throughout my life! I also tend to forget where things are when i "organize" and clean them up. My mom and I often got/get into fights about where i put my stuff. She thinks i will forget where something is if i put it in a random place, but i know that i will remember because _i put it there_ you know? Thank you so much for clearing this up.

I watched Alejandra for years , but she is not relatable . She is too perfect. You helped me sooo much more . You are realistic and approachable. I could not get organized as I thought unless you are perfect enough to have your Home be photographed your home is not clean and organized and that prevented me from getting my life together. Once I let the perfectionism go and learned my home can be good enough and livable my Home has completely been extremely clean and organized. It’s Pinterest perfect but functional and practical.

You're a lifesaver glad you agree with me . Another thing that bothers me is that she would only buy container store products ... then she saw the trend of cheaper dollar tree solutions and she jumped on that band wagon. Recently she saw the Marie Kondo trend and copied that and Is charging lots of money for that course . I actually emailed them and they totally denied that they are. Alejandra won an award for most organized and yah she was single and alone . So good for her . Most ppl don’t like like that

Which is why I been using open wardrobe systems and am thinking of a pegboard organiser for my craft items (now I have them stored in these opaque boxes and I hardly ever craft cos I forgot what's even inside!) I totally agree w u on the purging bc when I had the open wardrobe it got too visually cluttered so I adopted a minimalism approach and purged my items! I figured out on all this subconsciously, and when I listened to your description it all makes sense now! Now I can apply more tips to my organising 😁 srsly butterflies, If u master the art of letting go, your space is both FUNCTIONAL AND VISUALLY APPEALING.

My room was not "dirty" it was visually interesting (and yes, prone yo clutter). As an adult I have organized my homes as I moved into them, only to fall into a cluttered environment again and again. I have tried every decluttering and organizing strategy out there, always to fail and always to wonder what was "wrong" with me. Well, I'm a bee. A very crafty bee (I quilt among other things!)... You have described me, my tendencies, my issues and things that will help me and at 56 years of age I am decluttering and organizing like I was born to it. So being able to make containers attractive for my kids help and hanging my husband's things like a professional space helps.

As a butterfly I will say that my all time favorite organizing container is a sterlite clear shoe bins. Small so it isn't over whelming and keeps stuff contained. Love for house hold and for kids toys, and dry goods. I also like that their is a lid on it. Or can be used without one.

You had me almost in tears... Finally someone that gets me. Is this why I almost never close the kitchen cupboards? I think I know why I am the way that I am with my things and why it's so hard to purge. Fortunately being military and moving every 3 yrs has forced me out of my comfort zone and purge. Also, I think instinctually lately I have been getting hooks and bins to get more organized, but my husband hates this way of 'organizing' He wants everything out of sight.

I can totally relate to you! Even I thought moving every two years has helped me keep things to a minimum. But just wonder where all the bags of clutter, that I seem to keep giving off, come from. I get very attached to the memory of physical things hold and that's why I never go into my garage. I usually end up coming back with more items that I plan in my head, to make use again! but are totally unnecessary. Thank you so much for this video. my husband is a cricket I think. He is fast but ask him to find a thing he will never be able to;)

First time was cricket, next was a bee! Then the ladybug and then the cricket again. Never the butterfly! I love Alejandra! I never label anything but food. Which I love! Butterfly definitely describes those of us with ADHD. It is not that we "think" we will forget about things that are tucked away in drawers.....we WILL forget about them. Not kidding! We need things visually accessible, is right! But your later videos on labels really help with that. If you label your drawers, all over the house, and closets, pantries......it helps SO much!

And I always thought that my husband was just lazy or a slob when it came to putting his things away! This helps SO much, Cass! I started decluttering and reorganizing the kitchen this week and he was so concerned - how would he ever find anything? He came into the kitchen to study the new arrangement yesterday as my daughter and I were working. He seemed anxious about the changes, but they will actually be much better for him since the cabinets aren't stuffed full of items now.

Yeah, Butterflies (and Bees) are kind of misunderstood. Traditional organizing systems are made for Crickets and Ladybugs. Butterflies can feel really anxious about losing or misplacing items when they can't see them easily.

OMG, thank you. I don't know what I am yet, but this totally explains my husband. The laundry situation in our bedroom has gotten SO much better since we got a hamper/hanger that's out and visible in the room. His biking gear and favorite shirts hang there and he barely ever touches his closet clothes. He also refuses to "put things away" but now I realize he likes his things out and around him, so last night I found ways to decoratively display his empty beer growlers and commemorative glasses and now they aren't just strewn all over my kitchen! He looked around said, "Yup, I'm a Butterfly." I think I'm more minimalist leaning, but this video really helped me understand my husband's tastes and that's a good starting point for me! Looking forward to the other "bug" vids!!

So so thankful I found this channel. This is going to help me so much with my anxiety. I've really started to understand why things stress me out so much. I grew up in a house with a hoarder. Stuff / clutter was always everywhere, things would always get lost and forgotten about or lost and hours wasted trying to find things. I've recently moved into a new house (18 months is recent) half the size of my old my place and I'm really having a struggle knowing where to put stuff as I continue to unpack. When I do put something away I forget where it is, which causes a lot of stress as I find myself back to how it was a child wasting hours trying to find something. Clear containers and labels are going to help me immensely!

Hi Cass! Thanks for helping me realize my organizing style. I’ve been a butterfly most of my life. I think I’m starting to morphing into a bee. I recently turned 65 and find myself overwhelmed with “stuff”! I have been trying to settle my parent’s estate for 6 years now. My life can’t seem to move forward due to all of this stuff! I’m very stuck. I need to sort things between me and my sister. Some things need to be valued so they can be fairly divided. This is very time consuming and I have emotional connections to so many of these items. I can’t imagine throwing away a LP of my parent’s wedding ceremony and the “Just married” sign that was on the back of their Car. How do you throw away these kinds of things? I’m watching your RU-vid’s and your new show hoping to learn how to solve this giant task! Thanks for your help!

Hi Cas, I have been waiting for this series since you first mentioned it. I am a subscriber but usually don't comment. However, this is so exciting for me because I finally can relate to the "Butterfly". My husband is a cricket with piles all over. So as you can imagine when we entertain it's so hard!!! We usually end up putting our crap into our bedroom where it is so full one can trip on the piles in there. After we entertain we both really like how the house looks and feels. But, then we get into "where did you put this"? It can't be found and then there is stress. How does a Butterfly and Cricket cohabitate? Thank you for your advice and bringing our different organizing styles to light.

I'm definitely a visual organizer. Thank you so much for the definitive categories! :) I'm not sure where I fall as far as butterfly vs. bee, but I'll get there. I did however take issue with the suggestion to "look away" from the belonging when purging. I was greatly helped by the Kon Mari method (in the midst of this at this point) and that is to look, to hold (even very close), to see if it sparks joy. And also using the tweak that if I'm not sure, to keep it and use it a lot, put it on display, to see how I really do feel about it. Thank you so much!

My stepdaughter is definitely a butterfly & her closet doors have been off for awhile now. I had things well organized but closet has gotten less neat looking simply bc of her getting older & items changing. Was thinking a sliding barn door might b the perfect solution! This way if she or we have company we can close it otherwise it simply slides off to the side could even attach some hooks or something & stain in fun color....maybe that could b a compromise for u all too😀

I feel such relief when I see my things, and really dislike or hate putting things "away", like in a drawer, in my purse, in the glove box, the cupboards, my dresser (LOL, you were spot on with that!!), and my jackets/coats (depending on time of year, or just the day) will NOT go into the closet, but on hangers on the outside of the closet door because, as you said, for some reason, I NEED to see my jackets, and in my kitchen, I have most of my purses on a chair with knobs, balanced so it doesn't fall over (lol) so I can SEE them. I've got to ask how how does a butterfly organize a bathroom? I've got 2, one is small, while the other isn't. Plus, I've got PTSD, and can't remove my closet doors, or bad memories come back, so do have any other suggestions? I took the test, and I admit that I fought against butterfly, but when I stopped answering how I wanted to be, and answered how I truly was, the quiz was spot on about me. LOL It sure explained why I've always had to have my things in front of me, and freaked when they were out of my sight. LOL My Momma was a Cricket, may she rest in peace, so our organization styles did clash a bunch, I heard " that doesn't belong there all my life" . LOL I always tell people that I'm organized by being disorganized, and can tell them what's in each organized pile. LOL Now to organize my bathrooms, and another closet idea. LOL

So I thought I was a butterfly but I did the quiz again and I seem to be a cricket. My struggle is that I don't have any desire to be a minimalist. I love having stuff...but I hate having stuff everywhere. I like to have bins (maybe too much) and have things hidden away. I struggle with not enough storage for the things that I have and want to have. I definitely have sentimental attachment to my stuff. Seeing all things on display stresses me out though. I don't like open closets and open cabinets that display everything. Maybe I'll finally know what bug I am at the end of your series.

Thank you!! 😃 My question is, how to organize a space that has a lot of obstacles. In my studio room, every wall except one, has either a window, door, vent, heating element, or something else that can't be blocked. I'm a hoarder, and an artist/crafter... every time I've managed to declutter, rearrange, and organize, in the past... ( usually with my sister's help)... I have regretted letting go of something... and think about those things to this day... so how do I get over the fear of regret, so I can do some purging?! Also... it never lasts... the piles start up again, soon after it's done... I don't know how to maintain... the things I've tried so far... just don't work for me. I often feel hopeless. Here's the kicker... I have purchased your book, and bought "it's all too much" at the same time... I was excited when they arrived in the mail... and started reading them, both... and then, I misplaced them, and haven't been able to find them!! That's bad when you lose books about declutering, amongst your clutter!! Shakes head... I'm a seriously bad case!

Please Google *Non Zero Days*... I really hope it helps... basically the idea is that you do at least ONE thing every day, no matter what! This is how you don´t overwhelm yourself, especially when you´re depressed! Also *tidying up 15 minutes every day* (without distractions (put your phone in airplane mode, turn all other distractions off (except maybe listen to some uplifting music), then get to work for 15 minutes and you´ll feel sooo much better afterwards). Another a good method I get motivated is to just take a walk after waking up or breakfast... force yourself to *go out for only 5 minutes each day*, then when you get home, you´ll probably feel more energized and if so, then try to do your 15 minute tidying and you´ll feel so amazing! Hope this helps and you´ll be feeling better soon :) You´re strong and you´re enough!!! I believe in you! :)

UGH I can relate so much to this. It's super demotivating when a space you just organized gets crazy in like two days (story of my closet, ahem). What's worked really well for me is a few things: 1) get rid of more stuff. the less stuff you have, the less that can clutter up your space 2) one-step process for putting things away, where possible. I have a place where I keep clean clothes that I've worn once but aren't ready to throw in the hamper yet. then I put those clothes away at the end of the day before bed (this took some practice to remember, but its been great) and lastly 3) understanding that a lot of organizing has to do with the slow development of good habits. Choose your battles - pick the simplest habit that will make you feel less stressed and then work on only that. Maybe that's putting away your clothes, or emptying the dishwasher, or whatever, but pick JUST ONE and FORGIVE the rest of the messes in your life, knowing that you've simply chosen to focus on something else right now. Anyways, hope that helps - I've definitely had my battles with depression and being a natural slob has been a life long source of stress, so I can understand how you feel!

The Secret Slob is a butterfly!

OK. I took the test. I'm a butterfly. That explains why the closet door that fell off of the track eight years ago is still leaning against the wall. Now that I can see my clothes, 50% of them make it back into the closet. (ha, who knew!!!???). Thank you so much. Question, I have piles everywhere. How do I start? I purchased a double wide shelving system from Ikea and donated my dresser this past summer. The things you say about a butterfly are soooooooo true!!! I just can't tackle the decluttering piece. HELP!!!!

Decluttering is extra hard for Butterflies and Bees, but it will drastically improve your life. Remind yourself that you are not controlled by your things. Grab a garbage bag and just start filling it! Start with just garbage and recycling, everyone has some! Next decluttering INSIDE your cabinets and closets. Usually, our piles are the things we use all time, but we have no place to put them because our storage spaces are filled with unused things. Start decluttering in the hidden areas!

Set a timer and do only 15 minutes a day to start so you dont overwhelm yourself! Make your goal to only get rid of 1 plastic bag of stuff each time you tackle the pile if you find it “too much” to let it all go at once. And get in the “head space” before you start, put on music make a coffee burn a candle, what ever “puts you in the mood” ;p Good luck ❤️

Never thought about getting rid of them. That will help to quickly fill my donate bag (ha). Thanks.
