Well, I wouldn't say that Z Broly was necessarily "smarter" in the Legendary form than in his base, he was simply more verbal. Someone who doesn't talk much or just doesn't talk at all isn't necessarily dumber than someone who talks more.

I think there is something you're overlooking with OG Broly. Compare him to young Goku (pre-head injury). Saiyans, by nature, are aggressive and violent. What sets Goku apart from other Saiyans is he's not a ruthless killer by nature, that's kind of the point of his character in the Saiyan Saga. He is the exception to the rule, as stated by Raditz. Goku WAS like that until he fell and hit his head, as we see in the flashbacks. We never see Broly in a "normal" state, because whenever he's calm and docile, he's wearing the powert inhibitor. The moment he sees Goku be becomes enraged, even before transforming. So it's clear that Paragus is basically keeping Broly's mental state sedated, even without going full LSS, Broly is violent and destructive - like all Saiyans other than Goku thanks to his head injury. Broly's latent power and especially his transformations greatly exaggerate his destructive nature, but we never see him without either Paragus having the inhibitor on him, or he's full on rage mode. Unless you could him as a newborn, but even then he was shown capable of exploding with rage. Kale and Super!Broly are different because the context that all Saiyans are evil by nature has been retconned. Universe 6 Saiyans like Kale are not the planet conquering war machines Universe 7 Saiyans are by nature. Plus now that Gine is a thing and we see alot of more docile Saiyans in the Super Broly movie, Toriyama is clearly retconning the way Saiyans were depicted in the original manga.

Sayains in old dbz were pretty evil & violent. Broly as the legendary ssj took all of the sayains natrual bad traits and cranked it up to the extreme. His lssj form was just the absoute cherry on top. I'd say Broly in Z was pretty evil. He'd kid buu level evil when in Lssj imo.

Very few times where I say this is an L take. First I would like to say that one thing I agree that all three (Z Broly, Super Broly and Kale) shares are being victims of their own power. Because of this, it causes them to go berserk. Now, Z Broly is actually evil. Unlike DBS Broly and Kale Z Broly enjoys doing the things he does. When in his LSSJ form he is at his purest. You know there's something sinister about a person when they remember a grown voice to be the infant voice that gave them countless nights of no sleep because of his crying. Literally ON SIGHT triggers Z Broly hatred towards Goku and want to act in malice. Before even coming into contact with Goku decades later he was destroying planets and wiping out solar systems before even entering his Legendary Super Saiyan form. He did this all because he wanted to. Z Broly was created to BE evil not misunderstood. DBS Broly was created to be misunderstood to which multiple characters Including Goku points this out in the film. Z Broly is no different from someone like Freeza as they both do the things they do because it's their choice.

While Broly himself is not inherently evil, I would still definitely say the LSSJ transformation does in fact make him...evil. Not sure I could say the same thing about Kale though. Perhaps the transformation affects the 2 in slightly different ways.

No, Z Broly was always evil beacuse of his Saiyan nature, if look at all of the Paragus's flashbacks you can see that broly in his base form and the reason why he was calm when we were first introduced to him is beacuse of the crown on his forehead that made him. It wasn't until Goku showed up that something in Broly has awokened inside of him that managed to finally release him from his mind prison and started destroying while enjoying the carnage he causes, so no Z Broly was this misundertsood soul like super broly is he's instead natrually born evil like any Universe 7 Saiyan ever before him. Mental health issues don't preclude you from being evil. Maybe he has excuses but it's what you do that makes you evil, not what you are. And yes, Kale is evil, but only when she's in that Hulked out ultra-violent form. She doesn't have inclinations towards violence in her base form that would require her to be hypnotized all the time like Broly did.

Another point to note is Broly also was operating on Saiyan morality of essentially survival of the fittest. The Saiyan’s wouldn’t have seen themselves as evil, but just as a warrior race that value individual strength. So for that reason there’s an argument that you can’t really apply Earth-based ideas of good and evil to someone who only lived like a Saiyan. You could even stretch this idea to Vegeta, hence his internal conflict when he begins adapting to life on Earth.

Z Broly (imo) was meant to be an example of "Power corrupts". In his base, he's completely fine and honestly generally a chill dude, but once he lets his power go, he's instantly popping on the air forces and can be seen as "evil". His power literally corrupted him.

I think the issue is that Broly along with Paragus were planning to kill both Vegeta and Goku from the start (if I recall the movie correctly) so you can't really blame his transformations for that

I havnt watched the first Broly movie in a while but the first scene that comes to mind is that one where those little slave aliens are like looking up at their home planet and Broly looks them dead in the eye and says something like youll never go home again or something and throws a ki blast into it snd destroys it. All 3 did also carry out their last command or emotion when transformed. Kale thought Cabba would take Caulifla away so her Tranformation had the object to take Cabba's life away 🤣 Broly was told by Freeza and Paragus to fight Vegeta and Goku, then thought the fight caused his father to die so had complete blind rage and went kill everything mode. Original Broly pretty much grew up with his dad spouting hate for the Vegeta and planning to get revenge. In fact this might be what made his so sadistic, everyone else had a simple emotion or command or goal... this broly had went his entire life hearing a revenge plan... though the original idea does seem to make you way more psychotic... however it makes a bit more sense since if the power is constantly growing. The thing is Z Broly is fully aware of his actions... while S Broly and Kale are not when they are transformed into that bulky form. Z Broly is conscious of what he is doing and he does not show any regret of doing so... which means that he is somewhat evil or that he became evil due to what happened to him when he was a baby. Some people could be saying that it could be that the LSSJ form is forcing him to act like like that which isn't true because Z Broly was already destroying planets when he was a teen. Maybe if he had someone who actually cared about him he could have changed, maybe. Because Kale had Caulifla and Super Broly had Cheelai and Lemo to help him get better. Z Broly, on the other hand, had no one who truly cared about him, his own father abandonned him because he saw Broly as an obstacle who would oppose his plans because Broly would end up destroying everything.

Broly SSJ was made in mind with the pinnacle of a saiyan , a pure destruction being, seing how SSJ state increases a saiyan's aggression. As for Broly as a person , he sort of had a split personality , perhaps mutation that makes him completely different from base to SSJ or his mind is damaged , who knows. Its sort of the same scenario of Dr.Jerkyll and Mr.Hyde, Bruce Banner and Hulk but the idea works better with Broly because of his specie as a fighting race, already aggressive from the start

He isnt evil in the same way Frieza or Cell are evil, he is more of a victim of his upbringing and the power he was born with, its those two things. He did save his dad from planet Vegeta blowing up and chose to live with him for most of his life and aside from some outbursts seemed normal so.

I have a different opinion on this one. I think the transformation is more like an increased focus for their inner characteristics rather than just their anger alone. I mean in theory the same way we could say Broly (Z) is affected by his transformation but we could also repeat just as easily that he affected isn't as much as because how much less angry he appears and how much less of his state seems to actually affects him. Versus someone like Kale or Broly (Super) he has more rational than they do and yet he still chooses to attempt to torture others, to understand what can make another fighter suffer and start a plan to do so, like blowing up their planet, he's angry yet most of his actions are more in his control and are all still his choices that he is creating while within that form even though he seems to maintain more of himself... (...Had more analysis to this comment on different scenes for each character and the differences between each ones' transformations but a good deal got cut off. However a good point to remember is that Kale and Broly (Super) can be calmed down despite being in more an aggressive state even overcome their states. Yet Broly (Z) doesn't want to need yet still chooses the things he does despite his freedom.)

But also as was said what made Broly act "evil" was how he was used and was expected to die. I like this. This is an L take. You're looking at Z saiyans thinking of universe 6 saiyans and the current remaining saiyans. Please remember the Saipan warrior race wasn't a bunch of docile nice guys wanting to help and stuff. They were cold hearted and ruthless, a literal warrior race and brolly encompassed this. saiyans in super and saiyans in Z are two completely different entities especially when you compare how the anime depicted saiyans back in z vs how they are in super where they live in nice little communities with love and care.

Broly hated goku because, judging from the backstory. Of injustice. Broly saiyan status is much higher than goku but broly was treated less than goku. Goku, a low born warrior. Was sent to planet earth. Broly a saiyan elite was sentence to death because of how powerful he is, things are becoming clear from this perspective doesn't it!? Broly build resentment towards goku because how unfairly broly was treated compared to someone like goku. Hearing goku cry, seeing goku, and being in goku presence triggers broly's rage. Paragus wanted revenge on king vegeta and prince vegeta while broly on the other hand wanted revenge on goku because goku had a better life than broly. That sums up broly's overall hatred for kakarot, Kaka-KAKAROT!

Well put, Z Broly has become a victim of memes and dub changes and it kinda tanked his image a bit. I'd like to add that the restraining device put on him adds to his calmness and he probably still has bouts of outbursts that cause him to become destructive, probably what led him to be feared by the people of Shamo. I do 100% agree with how Z Broly is incredibly tragic in that from his birth, he did not have a quiet birth, constantly crying and being uncomfortable from Goku's crying, was assassinated, thrown into debris along with his injured father, and he witnessed and escaped his planet being destroyed. No matter which way you dice that, that is a lot for, what? His first few hours of life? You can even see Broly's emotions get to him when the Supernova was coming down and his eyes turned white. Probably the first ever time he tapped into LSS. If emotional upheavals cause Super Saiyan transformations, just imagine going through that as a newborn. Coupled with that massive trauma, the power of LSS and even SS from a very early age just made him slowly unhinged. I still say he's sadistic at base, he is a Saiyan and I'd compare him to Saiyan Saga Vegeta. Kakarot was just the first knock on his wall that caused it all to come back to a head, associating all of his trauma and events with the first thing he remembers, the unyielding crying. As to how Broly recognized him, it was probably on the level of Ki, atleast that's how I always saw it as, with the whole background changing showing their auras. Both Broly's are at the end of the day different characters, while sharing the same face.

If they had wrote Broly as a Jeckle/Hide character it would’ve made his character arc so much more interesting IMO. He should’ve played a much bigger role in the original series.

Last of us people had a parasite that changed them from your explanation. Demon dude had all the evil of afterlife characters put into him. Super Broly loses his mind as does Kale similar to the Hulk. The Hulk is a different person from Banner unlike these Saiyan and in the marvel world many see him as evil. Original Broly chooses to transform. He gets smarter (the opposite of losing his mind) and chooses to cause harm. The only reason he is docile in his normal form is his father controls him. The flashback shows him not being docile which is why he has the collar placed on him. He enjoys causing harm to others in all his forms but can’t really do it except in a transformed state where he can go through the punishment of the collar.

I mean, the only reason why Broly is regarded as evil is because if you think back, how the Saiyans were known to be ruthless but was able to control their anger in Ozaru state, it could be the main reason why they thought Broly was not able to control his inner beast. I know the film portrays that King Vegeta was afraid of Broly's potential, but I genuinely think it was more of Broly not able to control the Super Saiyan form. It's a bit like Gohan in the Cell saga, Gohan was fighting his inner anger to avoid completely letting go it could be the same with Broly, he doesn't understand or was not shown how to learn to control it instead he was treated like some rubbish by his own people.

Its always baffled me when people say broly is insane because of goku crying as a kid the movie tell us everything we need to know you just gotta pay attention, the reason why broly finds goku crying so traumatic is because in the same scene he literally get stabbed with a knife and left to die, broly doesn't remember this cause well he's a baby but the trauma is still there so his mind so later in life broly unconsciously associates that trauma with goku crying likely because the two events were so close together.

Base Z-Broly didn't show much personality at all, as he was always suppressed by the crown, so to say he was a calm, nice boy is a little baseless. Kale and S-Broly were actually shown to be calm and readonable people, even if S-Broly did have some aggression (as most Saiyans do). S-Broly even made friends with Ba. Kale, S-Broly, both show aggression in their Berserker states, but they only attack their "enemies" in a blind rage. Z-Broly is different. He becomes an outright sadist who takes great pleasure in hurting anyone and everyone around him. I feel like you have conflated sadism and aggression, and that lead to the conclusion that Z-Broly's behavior is somehow in-line with other Saiyans.
