One year in Norway and I'm stunned! 😱 Watch the video and you can see the difference and decide for your self, and be sure to let me know in a comment. 😊
When I say aftermarket, I don't mean brake specialist like Brembo and EBC, companies that have their own test teams and so on. I mean the cheaper option you often see part suppliers offer as a good deal.
I have never had Brembo but I have EBC and I found them to hold up really well in Norway with all the road salt we see. So I do recommend them as an alternative to original brake discs and pads.
On the rear you can see I have mounted Bearmach discs and EBC pads. I also have mounted Bearmach brake calliper at the same time so you can see how that is holding up to the rust as well. I forgot to mention it in the video.
In the front I have changed out the EBC to original Land Rover brake discs and pads. I changed the original callipers to new original callipers some years back. I think 3, so you can see how they are holding up.

Hello Simon I had Brembo at the rear for at least 6 years and now they are gone, changed as others suggested to Delphi Pads and Disks, I have also Delphi on the front so I can tell they look pretty good after one year. Cheers Sandro

You are right because I have after market brakes too and they squeal. Sticking with the original is important. Thanks for posting video.

Hey, check out another comment here, it states that some brake pads brands can squeal. You can try to change out the pads first to test out maybe. But yeah, go with original or proven brakes parts. Are some good examples in the comments. 👍😊

Nice video! Thank you for providing this information. I was in the Rover/Land Rover parts business from 1974 to 1986. With the sole exception of shock absorber bushings, high tension/spark plug leads, and workshop manuals, every part McKane's Rover Imports of San Diego, California sold was a genuine Rover and/or British Leyland part. We also sold the factory (genuine parts) shock bushings, spark plug leads and workshop manuals which cost much more than their after-market counterparts. What I found through experience is that Rover and Land Rover genuine parts were vastly superior but also far more costly than the after-market parts. On my own vehicles, I owned various Rover P-6 and SD-1 cars, and numerous Land Rovers and one Range Rover, I used nothing but genuine Rover parts. Rover quality was built on Rover's use of high-quality parts. (This suffered, of course, in the days of British Leyland.) I've not owned a Rover or Land Rover or Range Rover since 1993-1994. These days my wife and I operate a Buick Enclave and a Jeep Wrangler Unlimited Rubicon. We use nothing but genuine parts in our Jeep and our Buick. Andy McKane, Molokai, Hawaii, USA.

Hey Andy and thank you so much sharing such insight. 👍 After 9 years now with the Discovery and 4 years with a Defender, I have found the same to be true for the original parts. Truly tested and often many generations of improvements when you get the latest parts. Costly is true, especially thought the Norwegian official Land Rover garages, they add another 10x on the price. I order almost everything from the UK and then fix it my self, makes for "cheap" car hold. 😅 Buick Enclave, I had to google that one, not something we se in Norway. Looks like a typical family wagon you see in Norway, like Skoda or VW. The Wrangler I know, Unlimited Rubicon, is that the one with all the bells and whistles? Don't they come with locking diff and releasing sway bar. My friend was looking at one, two years back. Sounds like you have a nice combo setup of cars. 👌 Thank you Andy for a great comment all the way from Hawaii, I find that so cool here I'm sitting in Trondheim city, Norway, answering. Best wishes from Norway to you and your wife. Simon. 😊

There are decent aftermarket products out there. You just have to ensure you get ‘coated’ versions. Bosch, Borg and Beck as well as Delphi all do decent alternatives to LR original equipment that are coated against harsh environments. However for pads I would stick to Ferodo (Land Rover Original) EBC or Delphi only. I’ve tried others and the squealing is unbearable as well as they don’t work as good or last as long. Ty
@LandRoverDrive
@LandRoverDrive Год назад
Hehe, I had the squealing-experience with my Defender. 😊 All the brands you mention I recognise and have had good experiences with, not only with brake parts. I think these brands have some proper quality assurance departments make sense. Good point about getting the correct pads, I didn't know that Ferodo was making the LR parts, will note that down for later. 😊 Thanks for sharing Tyrone, it makes this channel ten times better. 👍 Simon

I was a parts manager for 17 years, some of that was for Rover also. Aftermarket manufacturers use different allows and the main complaint was usually noise or warping. Not rust, rotors are usually replaced before rust would be an issue.
@LandRoverDrive
@LandRoverDrive Год назад
Okay, that’s some great experience input! 👍 Where was this? Location wise, not company. We have so much road salt here so rust is a big issue in Norway. 😕

I fitted aftermarket discs and pads and after 12 months they are still fine. That said, I switched the pads on the front as they were good but created a lot of brake dust. Both discs and pads were Meyle. Great discs👍new front pads were Apex aftermarket
@LandRoverDrive
@LandRoverDrive Год назад
Okay. Meyle I think is one of the more reputable brands, that's my perception. Apex I haven't heard of and never used, are they a brake specialist or a aftermarket supplier?

A bit of surface rust wouldn't bother me. This is a cosmetic test in a way. You would need to carry out a performance test and a durability test to be able to do an original v aftermarket. One also needs to consider the types of usage the vehicle gets. Its true that you often get what you pay for, but there are many other factors too. Love the videos and keep them coming!
@LandRoverDrive
@LandRoverDrive Год назад
You are correct and if I could put them to the test in some way I would. I will however do another video next year and see the status of them after two years. Durability wise the rear should last longer than just because the front handle most of the braking, but I’m guessing I will need to change out the rear discs before the front. Already needed to adjust the hand brake shoes so I think the rust inside the drums is affecting the durability. 😅 We will just have to wait and see. The rust was more into the metal on the aftermarket disc and not like your typical surface rust, it’s why I was surprised. 😊 Thank you for the comment and for the nice feedback! Love making these videos so they will keep coming! 👍😊 Simon

Land Rover gets a lot of flack when it comes to their quality but the components like bushings, brakes, shocks and springs they use on the running gear are pretty decent, if overpriced when buying them for necessary maintenance. It’s the ridiculous electronic quality and ergonomics of part placement that is infuriating. The company has always cut too many corners when assembling complex systems.
@LandRoverDrive
@LandRoverDrive Год назад
I think the parts are very decent, even good. The service interval and the complexity of the newish Land Rovers and as you say, electric issues, gave the Land Rovers a really bad rep. The Discovery 3 on the other hand is a really good car and I think if you service it well it will threat you good. 👍😊 Some good and bad choices was definitely made, when it comes to thinking of the home mechanic. 😅 Body off turbo change like one. 🙃 I would love a older car again in the future just because of the simplicity of working on it. 😊 Even and old LC75 would be fun to try out.
@jdenmark1287
@jdenmark1287 Год назад
@@LandRoverDrive even my old rovers can be infuriating. Take for example the door mirrors that are bolted through the upper hinges which in turn are bolted through the door with the nuts inaccessible without holding the door open, which makes it impossible to deal with the mirrors without removing the doors as the door can’t just hang in space without the top hinge. Or cramming the entire fuse panel into a space in front of the gear lever which is directly under the vents you need to leave open for ventilation in hot humid climates, resulting in water running directly onto non waterproofed electrical connections. Or the bonnet draining directly onto a groove that instead of dumping onto the fenders ends one inch short of that so it drains onto the non galvanized mild steel that makes up the firewall and footwells. Or depending solely on paint to prevent galvanic erosion between the aluminum and steel. Or having indentation on the bonnet that collects water, snow and ice prior to the puma bulge. The LR3 is pretty good as is the LR4 especially with their V8 engines. My L322 back window was a mess, just like all my RRCs were. The fiber optic system (from BMW) was a joke and as was the cd changer located in that same rear compartment. But then again my Nissan Rouge had wires insulation made from soybeans, which rats in Hawaii love to eat. I had one get into my engine bay and chew through four wire harnesses in one night. 😤
@LandRoverDrive
@LandRoverDrive Год назад
Hehehe, all positives I hear. 😂😂 There are definitely been some smart engineers and some not so smart engineers working on the cars. Some brilliant solutions and some "what were you thinking" solutions. 🤔. Hehe, back window on the RRC with it's self opening feature. 😂 Have seen that a couple of times on Erik's RRC. I would love a LR3 with the 4.4V8, would be a nice upgrade from the TDV6, but with the fuel prices I'm not sure I would afford keeping it on the road in Norway. 😅 If the Defender wouldn't rust it would be my perfect car. 👌
@jdenmark1287
@jdenmark1287 Год назад
@@LandRoverDrive you can buy replacement panels including the entire bulkhead now that are galvanized for series and defenders. Add a galvanized chassis and you are all set. Or better still, you can get a welded marine grade aluminum body from North America . Or get a Foers Ibex kit from England which is a space frame body with GRP panels. Diesel here on the Big Island is over $6 USD per gallon or $1.67 per liter which is around 17.93 krone per liter I think.
@LandRoverDrive
@LandRoverDrive Год назад
@@jdenmark1287 I would have sell the house if I were to afford new chassis and bulkhead. Also really difficult to get a new chassis approved here in Norway. They are stupidly strict on rebuilds. 😕 16kr is the cheapest we see at the moment, usually around 21kr/L
