Winter Tire Season is here! So it's that wonderful time of the year where you get to change out your cool summer tyres for some much more smarter and practical winter tyres. "More Drivable tires I would say".
For me that means changing out the relatively new Cooper ST Maxx, 265/65R17 for some Nokian Hakkapeliitta LT2, 245/70R17. The winter tyres may not look as cool but they are really cool when it comes to performance on snow and ice.
If you plan do do a lot of driving in Norway during winter I really recommend getting some proper winter tyres and try to stay away from AT and definitely stay away from MT tires.
You can get away with some good and NEW AT tyres, bought late autumn, not driven a lot on, and you clean them when you hit snow and ice in Norway, and you bring some snow chains as backup.
When it comes to winter tyres, you can't go wrong with Nokian, there are other brands out there that is really good as well, but you won't go wrong with Nokian Hakkapeliitta.
Even if you are going for non studded winter tyres, just choose a Nokian and you will get one of the best tyres for nordic travel.
Remember to check the load rating on the tyres, if you drive a Discovery, look at the LT2 or LT3 series for studded and for non studded I would really consider checking out the LT AT Outpost.
If you are driving through Europe there are countries that don't allow studded tires so be sure to check that out. Also in some cities in Norway you will have to pay a tax for driving on studded tires, due to the extra wear on the tarmac.
Just remember, no matter the tires you decide to drive on, be sure to clean them when you arrive in Norway and start seeing snow and ice. It really do help a LOT. 👍

15:14 Shades of Christian and Vera here 😂 Another great film Simon. You're lucky to have a garage to worry about reversing into...spare a thought for those of us having to do all our maintenance in the driveway 😉 Regarding removing the rock sliders for winter...do you have the roads gritted with rock salt where you live, or is it mandatory to have winter tyres fitted?
@LandRoverDrive
@LandRoverDrive 8 месяцев назад
Hehe, will have to do some major persuading to get my wife to make garage videos. 😅 Overlanding videos on the other hand will there be more of. 👍😊 I love the garage and I never complain, but I do with for it to grow a bit taller. 😂 There is a lot of road salt and it wears a lot on the cars. Rust is the big car killer in Norway because of it. The law don’t specify winter tires, it says that the car should be fitted with tires fitting for the conditions at all times. So for winter when it’s snow and ice you have to have winter tires. But you could drive on any tire if the road is bare tarmac. With the changing conditions you would be changing to winter in the morning and summer tires during the day and then winter at night again. So basically all Norwegians changes to winter tires in September/October. And then back again in April/May. Thank you for watching and glad you enjoyed the video. 👍

As a norwegian, having driven countless miles in Norway in summer and winter with both cars and trucks, I've sworn by studless winter tyres since the late 80's, when the compounds started to make sense. The important parameters of a snow tyre are twofold: Self cleaning ability (threads) and friction. For both parameters to be optimal you want a softer tyre. But that works badly with studs, as they are going to be slung from the tyre by the centrifugal force with a softer compound. If you look at the contact area of where the studs make contact with the road surface, it's absolutely minimal. And there are strict laws regulating how far they are allowed to protrude. But they make this comforting clawing noise, that makes you believe you've got grip. On wet ice, they give a little bit better grip than a studless, but not much. And there are studless variants that contain aluminium silicate and other friction materials that are very good alternatives to studs. And now we're getting more and more restrictions where we can use studded tyres. And in Norway you pay an extra tax for using them around certain areas. My L405 is currently fitted with Nokian studded, as they were delivered with the car when I bought it. But next season, they will be replaced by a stud free variant. I even can't take the car to the continent during winter, as I used to go skiing in the alps. 😢

Hey and thank you for your amazing insight and for sharing your experiences. 👍 I think there are many good arguments for both studded and studless, and that the most important thing is that the owner/driver should get the tires fitting for the area he is going to be driving in. 😊 Here for instance, where the condition changes all the time, you get a lot of days with compact snow, ice around 0°c and undercooled rain throughout the winter. So I don’t drive studded because of all the days it would be fine with non studded, I drive on studded because of the days where studded is the only safe choice. As I said, many reasons for both tires and I have mine, like you have yours and other drivers should figure out what their reasons/needs are. European travel is a good point, if you read the video description I take up this point. Tax as well, which I think shouldn’t be in the tire choice equation at all. 😊 Sorry to hear about the 405 not going south, just drive down and bring some pliers. 😂

I have drove on ice roads in northern Canada, studded tires are so much better than regular winter tires, and the big trucks have to run tire chains. There is no comparison .

It never ceases to amaze me how few people use studded winter tires in the northern United States. My family never did, and I drove for ten years before I discovered them. Life changer.
@LandRoverDrive
@LandRoverDrive 8 месяцев назад
Yeah, for bigger cars/trucks I don’t see why you would pick studded, if you live in a snowy/icy area. And in the US, I feel all trucks are big. 😊 Seeing some snowmobile trailer setups as well, with a bigger haul than the small cargo lorries we have her has, I don’t really understand it. I maybe missing something. 🤔 But here as well, I think to many take chances, but the “green thinking” politics here in Norway hate studs and you have to pay extra in the cities to drive with them. I will always drive with studs as long as I can get a hold of them and I live in an area that they are the best option. 😉

@@LandRoverDrive we have seasons for studded tires and each state has different rules, but generally speaking you can only get fined if using them out of season. The snowmobile haulers you are referring to are the “toy haulers” I think. The can be a combination of RV and equipment trailer, for boats, motorcycles, snowmobiles etc. Trucks and cars are getting bigger and bigger. The trucks have basically become medium duty commercial vehicles that can go 126 kilometers per hour up a mountain hauling a trailer. I’m assuming your snowmobiles are similar to ours which have evolved into extreme performance machines with elaborate suspensions. In Maine there are complete trail networks with road signs rules etc that can take you all the way through Quebec. Out west, people have to travel hundreds of miles to get to places they can snowmobile as snow is in the mountains for a lot of states.

Yeah, seen some major trucks with big trailers, roomer 5-6 snowmobiles, equipment and tools. Just insane, would fit on the roads here. 😂 We have the same snowmobiles here, I used to have a 800 summit and have been driving a lot of snowmobile in my youth. Sound like the trails over there are amazing and a great for the snowmobile life. 👌 I have watched a lot of snowmobile movies like slednecks and 509 series, just amazing how you guys can go free riding in the mountains. Not allowed here. Fun to hear about the life on the other side. Sounds like I need to move to the States. 🏔️🚗👌

@RockmanDash Oh, here it’s up to the driver, the driver has all the responsibility to have the car or truck shoed to the condition. Is the “chain law” for all vehicles or only trucks 🚛 ?

I used to run Nokian HakkapeliittaR SUV (friction) tyres, but got in a bit of a tankslapper (slide) on some ice out in the country, and lost a bit of confidence, so when the time came last year, I switched to some Goodyear Ultragrip Arctic2 studded tyres - we also suffer from icy roads, and rock-hard compacted snow here in Finland (and Finnish Lapland). So far, so good.

Can’t really go wrong with upgrading to studded. 👌 And isn’t great to drive with confidence when all others are struggling. 😊 A secret pleasure of mine. 😂 Need to visit Finland at some point, it’s been almost 30 years since I was there last, Oulu.

@LandRoverDrive 8 месяцев назад
Sweet, let me know how it goes with the Outpost tires. I’m really thinking that they are a nice overland tire for longer drives here in Europe. A narrow and light all terrain for those long stretches of driving, on probably 90% tarmac. Disco 1 is lovely to look at, as is, and I can only imagine how the tires must fit the car. 😊

heads up using the extension with an impactor really lowers the torque. When doing tires use deep impact sockets. It will be faster taking the lug nuts off.
@LandRoverDrive
@LandRoverDrive 8 месяцев назад
Great point! I will get a set of deep impact sockets when it comes on sale. 👍 I also notice the angle of attack can affect the torque, keeping it strait, contra on the pis, make a huge difference. 😊 I love tools thought, tools that make every job easier and to the point of fun. 👌

Hi Simon, I remember the first time I went to Norway to Boda and drove a car with studded tyres and they were amazing in the snow and there was lots of it lol. I am looking to get a set of winter tyres for my wife's RRS so I'll look at those Nokian ones but we don't need any studs here thankfully 😁 I always put a light smear of copper grease on the mating face of the disc to help prevent the wheel sticking to it👍the Cooper's look like they have worn well so hopefully you'll get 4 or 5 summer seasons from them too. Definitely the best thing to leave the rock sliders on👍
@LandRoverDrive
@LandRoverDrive 8 месяцев назад
Hi name brother! 😊 I think everyone should try to drive on winter studded on proper winter conditions at some point, just to get the experience. Proper icy roads with changing conditions, like here in Norway, where you can start driving at 0ºC down by the sea, or down south, and end up at -30ºC in the mountains or the eastern inland against the Swedish border. I would really consider the Nokian LT-spec, LT2 old version and LT3 new version, the LT3 I know you can get without studs. LT = Light Truck, if you don't already know that yet. 😊 The harder compound and stronger load rating makes for better stopping distance on tarmac driving for cars/trucks that are on the heavy side like the RRS and the Disco. They are also designed to last longer and take up for harder use. A bit on the expensive side, but if you can run them for 5 years I think it worth it. I'm now going into my six season, not recommended due to hardening of the rubber, but I can't afford new once at the moment so will have them on for one last season. Will watch out for offers and if I get a good one I will put on new once, and get 5, not only 4 like I have now. Rock sliders are on and glad they are, makes me smile when I look at the car. 👌 Which size are you running on the RRS for winter? Simon

@@simon-mouse8739 Okay, thought the RRS had bigger brakes like the D4 has. If it’s same as the D3 is great, 17” is a great size and small enough to get a good and high sidewall. 👌 Small rims, large tires, how I like my cars. 😊

Hey, sorry but I can’t. I run on Studded winter tires as they are the best for winter, so haven’t tested the ST maxx on winter. I have been thinking on how I could get them tested properly but won’t be on our family trips as safety comes first. Maybe can do an early spring trip with them and see how they cope. I usually go from Summer to winter in early October. We usually drive up north so want to be sure that we are safe. And I go from winter to summer after the Easter holiday, when we also usually drive up north, so early April. It can happen that I need to put back on the winter tires as we can get snow all the way to early May. 2020 we woke up to 25cm of snow, a hectic start to the day. Put winter tires on my wife's Nissan Leaf and I stayed home with home office. 😊 Sorry for the late reply, been a lot. Up north now during Easter as I type.
