In this tutorial I show how to use the Copiermaschine app in the Ornament and Crime stock firmware and include some examples of how I've used it in patchs, along with some tips and tricks. Copiermaschine can be an intimidating mode; in this video I explain how it works, how it can be used in a musical way by showing you demo patches you can try yourself, and some tips and tricks to get the most from it.
At its heart Copiermaschine is a cascaded four-stage sample-and-hold quantising module. The heart of the algorithm uses a 256 step circular buffer which contains values generated by the app using either sampling or mathematical formulas. The resulting values generated on outputs A-D are pulled from the buffer.
Copiermaschine can be controlled manually using the knobs on the front of the module. This can be difficult to do when playing live, so there is also configurable CV control of functions. I cover how to use the CV control to change the melody generated by Copiermaschine, and adjust how the sequences play. Combining a fixed sequence with a random CV modulation is ideal for generative music.
In this video I use Mutable Instruments Plaits as one voice to sequence from Copiermaschine. I combine it with a second voice from ALM Busy Circuits MCO, through the Mutable Ripples filter. The Arturia Keystep is providing notes and gate information to bootstrap the circular buffer with initial values.
